Chapter 7

The on-call room was deathly quiet. I didn't even dare to breathe loudly.

Locke sat calmly across from me, his hands folded on the table.

He looked like he was really about to interrogate me.

"Speak. When did you find out you were pregnant?"

I answered honestly, "Two days ago."

His icy tone softened a bit, but then he got angry again. "Why did you decide to have the surgery without consulting me?"

My voice grew smaller as I guiltily replied, "The class president said you were getting married. I didn't want my child to be an illegitimate one without a father."

I knew this was my fault.

I sighed. "I'm sorry, it's all my fault."

After thinking for a moment, I added sincerely, "I shouldn't have forced you."

He got even angrier.

I changed my approach.

"I shouldn't have seduced you."

He got furious.

I thought, "I've already apologized, what more does he want?"

It's not like he lost anything.

After all, it was my first time sleeping with anyone.

I got angry as well and turned away, refusing to look at him.

Locke came over, crouched in front of me, and looked up into my eyes.

"The class president was just joking. I'm not getting married."

His expression was sincere, not like he was lying.

I thought, "Then he must have a girlfriend. I'm not about to become the other woman."

"You don't need to feel any burden. This child is mine alone. It has nothing to do with you. I don't need you to take responsibility," I said.

"No, I'm just as responsible for this child as you are. I'll take full responsibility."

My head hurt. I couldn't understand why he was being so stubborn.

I thought, "He's not as cute as he was when he was a kid. He's better off being quiet like he used to be."

To ease his guilt, I decided to lie.

"Don't overthink it. This child really isn't yours. It's not my first time to have sex. It's my ex-boyfriend's baby."

He let out a sneer and suddenly leaned in close to my ear, whispering, "Not your first time? Then why did you cry so hard that night?"

As soon as he finished speaking, my face turned red. I could feel my cheeks burning.

Locke saw my reaction, smiled, stood up, and patted my head.

He threatened, "Wait here. If you dare run away, I'll tell everyone in our class what you did."

I was stunned. I never expected that the boy who used to blush just talking to me would grow up to be so shameless.

I waited and waited and eventually fell asleep. When I woke up, Locke had returned.

His coat was draped over my shoulders.

He was leaning against the window, reading a medical book.

I remembered a quiet evening after school long ago.

That day, he was the only one in the empty classroom. He leaned against the window, the evening light casting a glow over him. The wind blew in, and the fluttering curtain gently brushed the hem of his clothes.

I softly asked, "Locke, do you want to become a doctor?"

Locke didn't seem surprised to see me. He just looked up and smiled gently at me.

The voice in my memory overlapped with the voice of the man in front of me.

"Yes. What about you, Kristina?"

My eyes grew hot, and tears nearly fell.

I quickly turned away and wiped the corners of my eyes.

Locke walked over, took my hand, and intertwined his fingers with mine.

He held my hand tightly.

"Are you hungry? If you are, we can eat first. If not, I'll take you home."

I let him lead me, feeling dazed.

My attention was all on him, so much so that I didn't even notice the stares we were getting in the hospital.

"Why are we going to my place?"

"To get your documents."

"Why do we need my documents?"

"To register our marriage."

His voice echoed in my ears, "I still love you just as much as I did ten years ago."
