Chapter 4
It felt like my heart was being slowly tortured.
When we were poor, Alice said we were the perfect match.
But now that we were successful, she said I was not good enough for her. I was not up to par with the young interns or Harvey.
I closed my eyes, trying to suppress my emotions.
"Alice, if you're willing to come back now, I'll pretend none of this ever happened."
Harvey blinked in surprise before bursting into laughter.
"Man, you're a real romantic fool!"
Alice looked at me as if I were crazy. "Bruce, have you lost your mind?
"I've already slept with Harvey, as you've seen. How could I go back?
"Are you upset about the settlement? If you think it's unfair, I'm willing to negotiate."
I felt a deep despair as memories of our past flashed before me.
Alice was once kind and beautiful, the girl I cherished above all.
She had promised to love me forever. My eyes welled up. I reached out to grab her hand. "Alice, don't leave me. Please?"
Alice's eyes darkened, and her voice was devoid of warmth. "Let go of me."
"Please, I don't want a divorce. I can't live without you."
I choked on my words, abandoning all pride. My only thought was that if Alice would come back and love me again, I would give up everything.
"I really can't live without you. Please, don't divorce me."
Alice looked at me coldly and shook off my hand. "Bruce, what I hate most is your pathetic, desperate attitude."
Chapter 5
I had thrown away all my pride and dignity, but it still couldn't win back Alice.
Instead, I was ridiculed by Harvey.
He told me to get out and see the world beyond my home instead of just tidying up and cooking.
That night, Alice and Harvey slept in the same room, on the bed that I had once shared with Alice, doing what we had once done together.
Alice was unrestrained, with no qualms at all.
Even with the door closed, their sounds reached my ears.
Occasionally, I could hear Harvey's vulgar jokes, which made Alice giggle.
Then, their sounds became more passionate.
My eyes felt dry and sore, but I didn't want to close them.
Every time I blinked, the image of Alice and Harvey entangled together appeared before me.
So, I stubbornly kept my eyes open, even as tears streamed down my face.
After an unknown amount of time, their sounds faded, and it was finally over.
I heard Alice say, "Harvey, you're so much better than Bruce."
Harvey laughed, "Don't compare me to that loser. I could take on ten of him with one punch." Alice laughed heartily, "Harvey, let's get married after I divorce Bruce. I can't stand living with him for another day."
It felt like my heart was instantly crushed, and I doubled over in pain.
My heart, it was broken.
Chapter 6
I agreed to the divorce.
I packed up my things quickly and moved to a house in the suburbs.
While packing, I found the love letters we had once written to each other and movie stubs from our dates.
I left them there.
Alice was right; we had grown up and were no longer in the age of writing love letters.
We hadn't watched a movie together in a long time either, as she always said she wasn't interested.
Alice was beaming. "Don't worry, Bruce. We'll split everything evenly—the company and the properties. Half for each of us."
I didn't want to look at her. With my head down, I muttered, "You deal with it."
Harvey chimed in, trying to persuade Alice, "Alice, you've put in all the effort at the company over the years. Why should he get half? Giving him a house is already generous enough."
Alice hesitated, thought for a moment, and then said, "Harvey's right. Here's the deal: You get the house in the suburbs, and the one in the city stays with me and Harvey. I'll also give you 200 thousand to help you get back on your feet."
I scoffed inwardly.
Our assets were worth at least seventy million, and because of Harvey's suggestion, Alice was offering me just 200 thousand.
I looked at Harvey, sensing his ulterior motive. He raised an eyebrow, his gaze full of challenge.
My eyes locked onto Alice's. "I'll take the 200 thousand, but be careful not to get scammed by certain people."
Alice, growing impatient, waved me off. "Don't tell me what to do. Just get out. Court tomorrow at nine. Don't forget."
Harvey eagerly opened the door, practically shoving me out.
I pressed my lips together, grabbed my suitcase, and left.
As the door slammed shut behind me, I heard Harvey's voice. "Finally, that eyesore is gone."
Alice's cheerful laughter drifted in the air. "Let's celebrate tonight with a big dinner!"
Alice had lost her mind.
The next day, I ran into Alice at a street corner near the courthouse.
She was in high spirits and even waved at me.
"Bruce, over here!" she called out.
For a moment, she seemed like Alice from the past—bright and lively, with eyes full of me.
I found myself walking toward her, a swirl of emotions churning inside.
Alice stood waiting for me when suddenly, a truck barreled toward her.
She was frozen, not even moving to dodge.
"Alice!"
In that split second, my mind went blank.
