Chapter 1 of After My CEO Husband Had a Secret Family

"Pick up. Come on, Shawn, pick up."

The grandfather clock in the hallway chimed eleven-thirty. Thirty minutes left of my birthday. The candles on the cake sitting on the dining table had melted into colorful puddles of wax hours ago.

The line clicked.

"Care?" Shawn’s voice sounded distracted.

"You said you'd be home by eight."

"I know. I'm sorry."

Loud, upbeat music blared through the speaker. A mechanical whirring noise followed, accompanied by a chorus of distant screams and laughter.

"Are you at an amusement park?" I asked, my fingers tightening around the edge of the kitchen island.

"It's a site tour," Shawn said. "The corporate merger with Wonderland Amusements. I mentioned it on Tuesday, remember?"

"You didn't. You said you had a dinner with the board of directors."

"The board is here. We're observing their late-night operations to assess the park's value before the buyout."

"At midnight?"

"The park closes to the public at ten. We get exclusive access after hours. It's standard procedure."

Then, a voice pierced through the background noise. High-pitched, joyful, and very close to the receiver.

"Daddy! Come here!"

Silence stretched between us. The carnival music kept playing. My chest constricted.

"Shawn," I said, keeping my voice dangerously low. "Who was that?"

"Who was what?"

"That child. The boy who just called you Daddy."

"Caroline, you're hearing things."

"I heard a child right next to you."

"There are hundreds of people here. Families stay until midnight for the firework show. Some kid ran past me yelling for his father."

"He sounded like he was standing right beside you."

"I'm standing near the carousel. It's crowded." Shawn sighed, the sound heavy and exhausted. "Are you really doing this tonight?"

"Doing what?"

"Accusing me. On your birthday."

"I'm sitting alone in a dark kitchen, Shawn. I've been waiting for four hours."

"And I'm working to secure a massive account for us. For our future."

I closed my eyes. The familiar twinge of guilt started to seep into my stomach.

"You know I don't care about the account," I said.

"I'm doing this for you, Care. Everything I do is for you."

"Just come home."

"I'm walking to the car now. See you in twenty minutes."

The line went dead. I dropped the phone onto the marble counter and buried my face in my hands.

The front door unlocked at exactly midnight.

"I'm a terrible husband," Shawn announced, stepping into the foyer.

He held a white bakery box in one hand and his briefcase in the other. He kicked his shoes off and walked straight into the kitchen.

"You missed it," I said, crossing my arms.

"I brought a peace offering." He set the box on the island and popped the lid. A fresh strawberry tart sat inside. My favorite.

I stared at the pastry, refusing to smile. "A tart doesn't erase the fact that I spent my thirtieth birthday alone."

"I know." He stepped closer. "Traffic on the interstate was completely stopped. A semi-truck jackknifed across three lanes."

"You always have an answer."

"I'm giving you the facts, Caroline. I didn't want to miss tonight."

"Did the board enjoy the rollercoasters?" I asked, the sarcasm thick in my throat.

Shawn rubbed his temples. "We didn't ride anything. We walked the grounds, looked at the infrastructure, and discussed profit margins. It was exhausting."

"With children running around calling you Daddy."

"We already went over this."

"It didn't sound like a random kid. He sounded like he knew you."

"How can a voice over a cell phone sound like it knows me? You're grasping at straws."

"I'm grasping at whatever is left of my sanity!" I snapped. "You've been distant for months. You work late four nights a week. And now, on my birthday, you're at a theme park with kids shouting for their fathers."

"You're letting your imagination run wild." He closed the distance between us, trapping me gently against the edge of the counter. "Look at me."

I kept my gaze fixed on his silk tie.

"Caroline. Look at me."

I raised my chin. His eyes were soft, filled with that same unwavering devotion I had relied on for five years.

"Why would I want another family?" he asked softly. "When I have you?"

"Because I cannot give you one," I whispered.

"Stop." His tone sharpened.

"Three surgeries, Shawn. Years of hormone injections. The doctors told us last month that my uterus is too scarred. It's never going to happen."

"I don't care what the doctors said," he interrupted, his voice echoing in the quiet kitchen. "I didn't marry an incubator. I married you."

"But you wanted to be a father. You talked about it on our first date."

"People change. Priorities shift."

"You're just settling for me because you pity me."

"Don't ever say that." He grabbed my shoulders, forcing me to hold his gaze. "Remember my mother's anniversary dinner?"

I nodded slowly.

"She cornered you in the hallway. She demanded to know when we were going to give her a grandchild, and she blamed your medical history." Shawn's jaw tightened. "What did I do?"

"You yelled at her."

"I stood up in front of my entire family. I told them I don't want kids. I told them this life, just you and me, is all I will ever need. If they couldn't respect my wife, they wouldn't see me again." He wiped a stray tear from my cheek. "I haven't spoken to my mother in six months because of that night. Do you really think I'd do that if I secretly wanted another family?"

I shook my head.

I wrapped my arms around his neck, burying my face in his shoulder. The scent of his cologne mixed with a faint trace of spun sugar.

"I'm sorry," I sobbed.

"Shh. Don't cry on your birthday."

"It's technically the day after now."

He kissed my forehead, his lips lingering against my skin. "Don't overthink. You are the only one I love."

"I know. I believe you."

"Good. Now, let's cut this tart before I eat the whole thing myself."

Shawn turned around to open the silverware drawer.

He set his phone face-up on the countertop.

I walked toward the sink to grab a damp paper towel.

As I passed behind him, the screen of his phone illuminated the dark kitchen. A bright, glaring square against the shadows.

I didn't look directly at the counter. I was too busy wiping the smeared makeup from beneath my eyes.

But in the reflection of the glass window above the sink, the screen was perfectly visible. The black night outside turned the windowpane into a mirror.

A text message notification hovered in the center of the display.

*Unknown Number: John had a great time today. He keeps asking when you'll play with him again.*

My hands froze. The paper towel slipped from my fingers, landing softly in the stainless steel basin.

John.

*Daddy, come here!*

Before I could turn my head, Shawn’s hand shot into the reflection.

His thumb swiped fiercely across the glass.

The message vanished.

He tapped the screen twice, locking it, and shoved the device into his trousers.

"Plates are in the dishwasher?" he asked.

His voice didn't waver. There was no panic. Just calm, practiced ease.

I stared at his reflection in the glass. The man who had just kissed my forehead. The man who gave up his family for me.

"Caroline?" he called out, glancing over his shoulder.

"Yeah," I managed to say. My throat felt like it was lined with sandpaper. "They're in the dishwasher."

"Perfect. Grab two forks, will you?"

I turned around, forcing the corners of my mouth upward. "Sure."

He smiled back, completely unaware that the foundation of our five-year marriage had just shattered across the kitchen floor.
