Chapter 6
Every spring, our two families got together the day before the child's memorial day to prepare the things.
We went up the mountain early and lived in the hotel next to the cemetery.
When they discussed what the child would like in front of me, I stood aside, feeling awkward and silent, like an outsider.
"This tiger doll is very popular this year. I saw a lot of children wearing it online. My grandson will definitely like it."
With a smile on her face, Emily took out a doll our of her bag and gave it to Bruce.
My father-in-law, Jake Lowell, was dissatisfied and took out a Barbie doll. "Who said it must be a boy? What if it's a girl? She might like this one."
The child was less than four months old, and it was hard to tell the gender when it was taken out of the belly.
Softening his expression, Bruce took the things his parents had brought one by one.
"Take them all, and choose whatever you like later."
My parents stood on the side with flattering smiles on their faces. "Yes, yes, bring more over. The child can choose later."
Emily glanced at my mother, and the corners of her mouth that were raised instantly dropped. She rolled her eyes and said nothing.
My mother, who had been infuriated, deliberately walked over to me, and twisted my arm hard, venting her anger on me.
"If the child was still alive, would I have to suffer from her?"
"It's all your fault! How could I give birth to such an unlucky girl like you? You can't even protect your own child."
"Kneel down to apologize to that old lady and make her feel better. You've done nothing. You are so stupid!
My mom never thought that I was the one who suffered the most from the loss of her child.
I couldn't help but ask, "Mom, do you only have my younger brother and the child in your heart? What about me?"
Shouldn't you be my mother before becoming a grandmother?
Moreover, it was not that I hadn't tried to mend my relationship with Emily. When I got married, she treated me the best. She would give me whatever goodies she had, saying it was for my health and to help me conceive a child.
But later, she never looked at me again. All the gifts I sent were thrown into the trash.
"The killer who killed my grandson makes me sick."
If I was alive, she would feel sick.
Chapter 7
My mother said in a harsh tone, "If I knew you were so useless, how could I be your mother?"
After scolding me, she rolled her eyes at me. She soon changed into a smile before going back into the crowd.
I suddenly had a headache and I became further and further away from them. My hands and feet were in pain and I couldn't walk anymore. I desperately clenched my teeth to prevent myself from making any sound.
But at this moment, Bruce turned around and saw me fall behind. He angrily came over and grabbed my wrist.
"Daisy, what are you doing? Why are you walking so slowly?"
I squatted on the ground, hugging myself, with cold sweat covered. "Bruce, you go ahead."
Bruce stared at me for a while. Just when I thought he was going to notice something was wrong, he coldly snorted and pulled me up, urging me to move forward.
"You dare not go see the child, right? That's your child, and he was killed by you!"
"Daisy, it's all because of you that our family has become like this. No matter what, you must go today. You have to kowtow to him and repent. You owe him an apology!"
My head seemed to be torn apart by pain and self-blame. Bruce's words were like an unavoidable flood, bringing out all the pain I had buried with blood.
I stumbled forward as he dragged me after him. With a blurred vision, I murmured to myself, "Baby, it's my fault. It's my fault."
Bruce roared, "It's you who is at fault!"
Chapter 8
I had a headache all night long.
The intense pain finally faded away when the dawn broke. I looked out at the sky outside the window listlessly, suddenly unable to remember why I was there.
I only felt that the sky outside was as blue as the ceiling in the baby room.
My in-laws were packing things into bags, my parents were standing at the door waiting, and Bruce was smoking outside the room. Seeing that I was not showing up, he impatiently opened the door and urged me in a very strong tone, "What are you still doing inside? Don't you know what day it is today?"
What day?
Where is my phone?
I couldn't remember what day it was today. A huge panic suddenly set off in my heart and I started frantically looking for my phone.
Going out with my diary was too noticeable, so I wrote down the notes on my phone.
The unexpected reaction completely angered Bruce. He rushed to the bedside, grabbed the phone I couldn't find, and slammed it hard on the ground. His eyes were bloodshot, and he gritted his teeth and asked. "Daisy, do you have a heart? Do you love this child so little that you don't even remember his memorial day?"
It turned out that today was the child's memorial day, the day he completely left me.
But I forgot.
The commotion attracted others as well.
Knowing what was happening, Emily lost her usual calmness and rushed up to slap me hard, hysterically shouting, "Bitch! Heartless! How did my son marry such an ungrateful person like you? Why didn't you die? My poor grandson. My poor grandson."
"Get out! Go die! You don't deserve to see the child! Get out now!"
Jake hugged and comforted Emily, but his eyes were full of disgust.
My mother, in order to show that she stood with Emily, rushed up and smashed a cup on my head.
"You bastard! Get out now! You don't deserve to be a mother! I'll pretend I never gave birth to you!"
My head was buzzing as blood ran down the smashed wound and dripped onto the remains of my mobile phone on the floor.
I stared blankly at the broken phone, tears streaming down my red eyes.
I would never forget it again.
How could I forget about the child?
