Chapter 3

Hugo and his colleagues had been busy for several days, but still no news. They analyzed everything they could analyze.

"There have been no reports of missing women in the vicinity!"

"No such report has been filed."

"The DNA analysis has failed to identify the deceased. The individual appeared to have had no criminal record before her death!"

A group in the room smoked one cigarette after another without any clue.

"If someone in a family has been missing for so long, they will definitely be found by their family. Why didn't any family member report the death of this person?"

A police officer, holding a cigarette, said in confusion and continued, "Could it be an orphan?"

Hugo rubbed his eyes and kept thinking. Suddenly, he opened his eyes and said, "If we find the definite part, there must be evidence to prove the deceased's identity! Let's find her face if we still can't determine!"

At this moment, I looked at the doll he threw away and kept trying to pick it up.

Hugo, the evidence you want was in this doll, but you threw it away with your own hands!

Hugo continued to think and then said, "The crime scene!"

A standard murder scene contained evidence left behind by the perpetrator. Even more chilling, there had been instances where deranged killers had revisited their crime scenes for their own twisted pleasure.

"What motive drove the murderer to dismember the victim into numerous pieces and subsequently conceal some of the body parts?" Hugo inquired.

"Because! The hidden parts can prove the identity of the deceased!"

"Thus, we must locate the severed face of the deceased! Additionally, the fetus from within the abdomen must be recovered as well!"

When it came to the face, Hugo was stunned for a moment.

On my face, there was a teardrop mole. Hugo used to like touching my teardrop mole. He said that only beautiful people had it, and it was a rare beauty mark.

"The deceased was thrown into the police station. Could it be the gang seeking revenge?"

"That means, those people are seeking revenge!"

"Is there anyone in our department whose family member or relative is pregnant?"

Hearing this, Hugo couldn't help but raise his head.

"No, if it's a family member from our colleges in the bureau, we would be the first to receive the report!"

"But what if the family members don't know or are completely unaware?"

"Their goal is to retaliate against someone in our Criminal Investigation Brigade! Captain, is Rory pregnant?" One asked.

Hugo was stunned momentarily, then shook his head. "No, she's not!" Hugo said decisively.

"I did inform you when I found out I was pregnant, but you were busy tending to Renee then. You accused me of lying and told me to stop being dramatic, that it was all an illusion. And now, you've missed another crucial piece of the clues." I thought.

Among the many police officers, if one were to say who has offended the most people, it would definitely be Hugo. Over the years, he had destroyed dozens, if not hundreds, of criminal dens.

Hugo snapped out of his thoughts and quickly organized his ideas.

He divided everyone into groups and started visiting and investigating.

Just then, his phone suddenly rang. After seeing the call, he immediately walked out of the office.

"What's wrong? I'll be right there!"

I looked at his anxious look and knew without thinking who the person calling was Renee.

Chapter 4

Hugo returned to the office and gave instructions before rushing downstairs and heading straight to his car.

I followed Hugo and saw him quickly arrive in front of a building.

I knew this place. It was the apartment Hugo's parents left for him.

Over the years, I had suggested renting out the apartment many times, but he never agreed. He said it was left to him by his parents, and he liked to come here alone when he had nothing to do.

Now, it seemed that he was not unwilling to rent the apartment out but had been given to someone else to live in.

After Hugo got out of the car, he ran up the stairs. After a hurried knocking on the door, a haggard-looking woman opened it, and he hugged her tightly and said, "Don't be afraid, don't be afraid, I'm here!"

My heart sank. "I know this woman. Isn't she his idealized love, Renee Godfrey? So that's how it is. Now I understand everything. His heart has never belonged to me. It has always been with Renee from the beginning to the end."

"Hugo, I just heard a knock at the door, and when I asked who it was, there was no answer. Could it be...they've finally come for me?" Renee said with a runny nose and tears streaming down her face.

Hugo held her tenderly and walked into the room.

At this moment, I realized that this apartment had been renovated again at some point. It used to have an old-fashioned retro style but had been transformed into the most popular cream-colored style.

I thought Renee really liked this style. In fact, I used to like it too. I had suggested redecorating our home several times, but Hugo said we didn't have money because it had been spent here.

Hugo's love only belonged to Renee, and he never gave it to me.

In the room, Renee sat on the sofa, while Hugo looked at her with a pained expression.

"What happened today? You look tired," Renee spoke first.

"A gruesome crime has occurred, where a body was mutilated by severing its limbs," Hugo described the case briefly.

With a 'bang', Renee's water cup fell to the ground.

"How cruel! The victim must have suffered a lot when she died."

Hugo cleaned up the broken cup, comforting Renee softly, "Don't be afraid. It's not those people. Even if it is, I will catch them all!"

However, Hugo seemed to think of something and continued, "Even so, it's best if you refrain from going out. I'll arrange for someone to monitor the area closely to ensure your safety. If you notice anything suspicious, please call me right away."

"Hmm, how is the investigation going for that case?" Renee asked.

"No leads! "

Hugo spoke without reservation and told Renee all the details about the case.

Then, he gently coaxed her to sleep and sat quietly by the bed.

They were so compatible.

However, Hugo didn't know that the person he was comforting so carefully was actually a demon!

Chapter 5

The next day, Hugo returned to the police station early and visited major hospitals with his team, trying to find information about pregnant women inside.

Finding a specific person in this huge crowd was like looking for a needle in a haystack.

"A pregnant woman was really pitiful a few days ago."

"Yeah, she called her husband while pregnant and was scolded!"

"That's why a woman needs to find a good man as her husband."

The nurse chatted in the nurse station, and Hugo frowned when he heard this.

"Did he think of me? Did he think of the day I called him and told him I was pregnant, but he said I was making a fuss? It must be; otherwise, why would he be stunned?" I thought.

"Hugo! Something's up!" A police officer pulled his thoughts back, and he got up and left after glancing at the nurse.

Back at the police station, there were two boxes on the desk, one was the doll from before, and the other was just delivered today.

"This box has Hugo's name on it!" Someone handed the box over.

"Dare to open it? There's a surprise inside!" Red writing appeared on the box, and Hugo's face changed instantly as he looked at the box.

He took out his phone and dialed my number, but unfortunately, no one answered, so he opened WhatsApp.

[Rory! Are you done yet?]

[Do you think I can forgive you just because you brought these things?]

[Do you know how childish you are?]

Hugo typed on WhatsApp, and the police officer beside him cautiously reminded him, "Hugo, the handwriting on it doesn't look like Rory's!"

"Don't say that!"

"How much does Hugo hate me to get so angry?" I thought.

"Hugo, what I mean is, take a look at the box, and you'd better contact Rory." The police carefully handed over the box and then stepped back.

Hugo slowly opened the box, and in the next moment, a foul smell rushed over.

Inside, clearly placed, was a piece of human tissue.

Hugo threw it aside! The forensic scientist next to him quickly collected it.

But when he picked it up, something unexpected happened. There was actually something underneath the delivery box!

As the forensic scientist delicately unfolded it, a finger emerged, and it was immediately apparent that there was something attached to it.

At this moment, my eyes were filled with tears.

It was the wedding ring, the very one Hugo had given me, one of our exclusive, matching bands!

"Hugo! Something might have happened to Rory!"
