Chapter 1 of Wife Left After Assistant Stole The Team Mom Jersey

Sarah POV

"And the VIP Team Mom award goes to..." Coach Miller shouted into the microphone, his voice booming through the arena speakers and rattling the glass panels.

I stood by the rink gate, adjusting my grip on my son Ethan's emergency inhaler. My husband, Mark, stepped onto the ice holding the custom-stitched maroon jersey. I stepped forward to meet him, a tired but genuine smile forming on my face.

He walked right past my outstretched hand.

He stopped in front of his twenty-two-year-old executive assistant.

"For keeping the boys fed tonight," Mark announced, his voice carrying over the crowd as he draped the heavy fabric over Maya's shoulders.

Maya giggled, adjusting the collar so it slipped off one shoulder. "Oh, Mark, I just ordered some pizzas!"

"You saved the celebration," Mark insisted, grinning down at her. "The boys love you."

The team erupted into cheers, banging their sticks against the boards for a girl who had used one of Mark's supplementary cards to order pizza an hour ago. I stood at the edge of the rink, the cold seeping through my shoes. Then, a familiar sound cut through the noise. A dry, rattling hack.

Ethan leaned over his hockey stick, his chest heaving. His shoulders hitched with every shallow intake of air.

I pushed through the gate and stepped onto the slippery surface.

"Ethan," I called out, holding up the blue plastic device. "Take two puffs. Now."

My twelve-year-old son straightened up. He glared at the inhaler, then at me.

Smack.

His gloved hand struck my wrist hard. The inhaler flew from my fingers, skittering ten feet across the scratched ice and bouncing off the goalie net.

"Leave me alone!" Ethan yelled.

"What are you doing?" I asked, keeping my voice steady despite the stinging in my wrist. "You are wheezing."

"I don't need it!" Ethan's face flushed a deep, angry red. He pointed a thick, padded finger at Maya, who was watching from Mark's side. "Maya says champions don't stop celebrating over every little wheeze. You always do this. You always ruin my fun!"

He stood there, chin jutted out, mimicking the exact arrogant posture his father favored.

"Ethan," I started, taking a step toward the discarded inhaler.

"Stop treating me like a baby!" he screamed, his voice cracking. "Maya actually let us celebrate. You just want to make me look weak in front of everyone!"

I snapped my head toward Mark. I expected him to step in, to discipline our son for disrespecting me in front of hundreds of people. I expected him to act like a father.

Instead, Mark slid his arm around Maya's waist, pulling her flush against his side.

"Mark," I demanded. "Tell him to pick that up."

Mark rolled his eyes. "Give it a rest, Sarah."

"He needs his medication. And he just hit me."

"He bumped your hand because you're suffocating him," Mark countered, his tone laced with heavy irritation. "Why do you have to make a scene? Maya was just trying to show the boys a good time, and you're letting your jealousy ruin the whole night."

"Jealousy?" I repeated, the word tasting like ash. "I spent sixty hours this week organizing this tournament. She ordered takeout."

"And they loved it!" Mark fired back, his voice echoing off the plexiglass. "You're always hovering, always nagging. You make everything a chore. Maya brought energy. She brought fun. Why can't you just let them enjoy their victory?"

"Because his victory doesn't cure his lungs," I said, pointing at Ethan. "He is wheezing, Mark."

"I'm not wheezing!" Ethan forced out, though his next breath rattled audibly in his chest. "I'm just tired! You're making it up so you can control me!"

Maya stepped forward slightly, placing a manicured hand on Mark's chest. "Maybe she's just exhausted, Mark. She's been doing too much all week."

Mark nodded, his expression softening as he looked at her before hardening again as he turned to me. "See? She's trying to be understanding, and you're treating her like an enemy. Grow up, Sarah."

I looked at the young woman wearing my hard-earned title. Then I looked at the man I had married twelve years ago. He stood tall, defensive, completely aligned with the assistant against his own wife.

"He has a medical condition, Mark," I said, my voice dropping lower. "If he has an attack here—"

"He's fine!" Mark interrupted, waving a hand dismissively. "Look at him. He's a champion. Stop trying to drag him down to your miserable level."

Ethan smirked, crossing his arms over his chest protector. "Yeah, Mom. Go wait in the car if you're going to be annoying."

The blood pounding in my ears suddenly vanished. The frantic, anxious mother who had meticulously packed medical bags and charted emergency routes evaporated.

I looked at Ethan. His lip curled in a sneer, entirely devoid of regret.

I looked at Mark. His hand rested comfortably on the hip of a woman ten years his junior, his eyes daring me to argue.

I unclenched my jaw.

"Okay," I said quietly.

I crossed to the net, picked up the inhaler, and handed it to Coach Miller instead of Ethan. "Two puffs through the spacer if he will take it. If his breathing worsens or he cannot speak in full sentences, call 911. Do not wait for Mark's permission."

Coach Miller closed his hand around it. "I've got him."

Only then did I turn away.

Mark frowned, thrown by the fact that I was no longer arguing. "Okay what? Go sit in the stands and let us finish the photos."

I didn't answer. I turned my back on the ice.

"Sarah, don't you dare walk away while I'm talking to you!" Mark shouted.

"Mom!" Ethan called out, a brief note of confusion piercing his bravado. "Where are you going?"

I kept walking. My rubber soles gripped the mats lining the tunnel. The sounds of the arena—the cheering, the scraping of skates, the echoing announcer—faded behind me. I shoved the heavy glass doors open and stepped out into the biting winter wind.

The parking lot was empty, the streetlights casting long, lonely shadows across the asphalt. I didn't walk toward Mark's SUV. I walked toward my own sedan parked at the far end of the lot.

The freezing air hit my face, sharp and clearing.

I pulled my phone from my coat pocket. My thumbs tapped the screen with practiced speed.

First, I opened the hockey team's parent communication app. I tapped 'Leave Group' and confirmed.

Next, I opened my banking app.

The screen loaded the joint household accounts. I opened the supplementary card on the family-management account Mark and I both controlled. Maya had used it for thirty pizzas an hour ago and planned to put the team's steakhouse after-party on it next.

I hit 'Report Lost or Stolen' and pressed 'Deactivate Immediately'.

The confirmation checkmark appeared on the screen, locking the account right as Mark's text popped up, demanding I come back inside and pay the catering deposit.
