Chapter 1 of When My Husband Lied About Our Son’s DNA

I knew something was wrong the moment Kellen's assistant called me down to the living room.

Not the kind of wrong you can name. Just a coldness in the air, like the temperature had already decided something the rest of the room hadn't caught up to yet.

The penthouse living room was all glass and grey stone, forty floors above Manhattan. Floor-to-ceiling windows. The city spread out below like something Kellen had personally arranged. He stood with his back to me when I walked in, hands in his pockets, looking out at it. That was how he always stood when he was about to deliver a verdict.

I sat down without being invited to.

'I'm dying.'

He said it the way he'd say the market was down. Flat. Informational.

I pressed my thumb into the inside of my opposite wrist and kept my face still.

'A toxin in my bloodstream.' He turned around then. His face was the same face I'd been looking at for six years—sharp jaw, dark eyes, the particular brand of handsomeness that belongs to men who've never been told no. 'Rare. Untreatable. Seven days, give or take.'

Seven days.

I didn't speak. I just watched him.

'I've made a decision about how I want to spend them.' He paused, and something moved behind his eyes. Not guilt. Something colder than that. 'With Aspyn.'

Aspyn Medina. I had known that name for six years too. It lived in our marriage like a third person who never quite left the room.

'You were never—' He stopped. Adjusted. 'What we had was strategic, Cataleya. You know that. Your family's pharmaceutical connections. The merger optics. You were an acquisition.'

Each word landed clean and precise, like he'd rehearsed them. Maybe he had.

'I want a divorce. Immediately.'

I pressed my thumb harder into my wrist. I felt the pressure travel up my arm, into my shoulder, somewhere steady.

I thought about Leo. Four years old, in a hospital bed two miles from here, his small chest rising and falling with the help of machines. I thought about the blueberry pancakes I'd made him that morning and left on his bedside table because the ritual felt like a prayer.

I thought about six years of believing a lie so thoroughly I'd built my whole life inside it.

'Okay,' I said.

Just that. Okay.

Kellen blinked. I think he'd expected tears. Maybe screaming. Something he could use.

I gave him nothing, stood up, and walked out.

---

The cold storage unit was in the penthouse's lower level. I should have known better. I did know better. But Kellen's lawyer had said the preliminary divorce documents were filed there—physical copies, he said, in the records room adjacent to it. I was tired and I was running on three hours of sleep and I walked right into it.

The door was reinforced steel. It locked behind me with a sound like a period at the end of a sentence.

At first I thought it was a mistake. I actually stood there for a full minute thinking that.

Then the temperature registered.

I pounded the walls until my hands stopped hurting and then kept pounding because stopping felt like giving up. The cold came in slow and then all at once, the way grief does. My fingers went numb. Then my feet. I sat against the wall and pressed my knees to my chest and I thought, very clearly: he wants me dead before the paperwork goes through.

Marta, one of the household staff—a woman who'd brought Leo warm milk when he couldn't sleep and who Kellen had never once learned the name of—she was the one who opened the door. I don't know what she risked to do it. I never got to ask her properly.

I was barely conscious when she pulled me out. My hands were raw. The last illusion I'd been carrying—some small, stubborn thing that had survived everything else—went out like a light.

---

The next morning I sat across from Kellen and his lawyer in the same grey stone living room.

'I agree to the divorce,' I said. My voice didn't shake. The lawyer's pen paused. 'One condition. Kellen violated the prenuptial agreement. He leaves with nothing.'

Kellen almost smiled. He was dying, he thought. What did he need assets for.

He signed without reading it.

I watched his pen move across the page and I felt something settle in my chest. Not peace. Something more like a foundation being poured.

---

Forty-eight hours later, my phone lit up with the same notification from seventeen different people.

A video. Me, or a version of me, in a hotel corridor with a man whose face was blurred. The angle was wrong. The timestamp was wrong. Everything about it was wrong except how real it looked.

It was trending before I finished watching it.

By the time I set my phone down, the anonymous accounts had already filled in the backstory. Years of alleged infidelity. Sources. Details. A whole architecture of fiction built so fast and so thoroughly that the truth didn't have room to breathe.

I sat very still.

I pressed my thumb into my wrist.

And I started to plan.
