Chapter 1 of When My Husband Brought Home His Secret Family

I was eight months pregnant when my marriage ended. I just didn't know it yet.

It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon. I was sitting on the sofa in our Upper East Side penthouse, rubbing my swollen ankles, when the doorbell rang. Hard. Three times.

I opened the door.

It was Mr. Henderson from the tenth floor. His face was bright red.

"Fourteen thousand dollars, Maya," he snapped. He didn't even say hello. "Your son keyed my Porsche Cayenne in the garage. A deep gouge all along the passenger side."

I stared at him. My hand rested on my heavy belly. "Mr. Henderson, I don't have a son. I'm pregnant with my first child."

"Don't play dumb with me," he barked. "I saw him running away. Little boy, dark hair. He lives here. The doorman let him in earlier with a key fob!"

A cold feeling hit my ribs. It felt like ice water in my veins.

"Let me check the cameras," I said quietly. "I'll go down to the office right now."

The security office in the basement was small and smelled like stale coffee. Frank, the concierge, pulled up the garage feed from 2:15 PM.

"Here," Frank said, pointing at the monitor.

A sleek black Porsche sat in bay 42. Suddenly, a little boy darted out from behind a concrete pillar. He looked about five years old. He wore blue sneakers and a red hoodie. In his small fist, he held a car key, dragging it across the glossy paint.

Then he stopped and turned, looking straight into the camera lens with wide, guilty eyes.

My breath stopped.

The boy had dark, wavy hair. He had high cheekbones. And he had Bryce Cole’s jawline. The exact same cleft in his chin. The same heavy, dark brow.

He wasn't just a random kid. He was a miniature version of my husband.

"Play it again," I whispered.

Frank clicked the mouse. The boy ran. The boy looked up. Bryce's face stared back at me through the screen.

"One more time," I said.

Frank glanced sideways at me. "Mrs. Cole? Are you okay? You look pale."

"I'm fine," I said. My voice was flat. Empty. "Thank you, Frank. Please email that clip to my private address."

I took the elevator back up. My legs felt heavy, but my mind was terrifyingly clear.

At seven, Bryce came home.

He brought a pastry box from my favorite bakery and a warm smile.

"Hey, beautiful," he said. He kicked off his leather shoes, walked over, and kissed my forehead. Then he dropped to one knee and rested his warm palm against my belly. "How's my baby girl today? Did you kick your mom?"

He looked up at me with soft brown eyes.

For six years, I thought those eyes were full of pure devotion. When my father urged me to sign a prenuptial agreement before our wedding, I had refused. I had argued with my dad, insisting Bryce loved me for me, not for Reed Capital Group.

Now, looking down at him, I didn't see love. I saw a script. I saw a performance.

"She was quiet today," I said.

"Good," he smiled, standing up. "You need rest. I'll plate dinner."

I watched his back as he walked into the kitchen. I ate the food. I drank my water. I said nothing.

I didn't sleep that night.

At two in the morning, the penthouse was dead quiet.

I slipped out of bed, barefoot. The hardwood floor was cold against my skin. I went to the kitchen island, turned on the electric kettle, and opened my laptop.

I didn't guess. I followed the numbers. My father had taught me to read balance sheets before I was twelve.

I logged into our joint accounts and pulled five years of statements.

There were patterns. Every first of the month, a five-thousand-dollar transfer went to a company called *Apex Horizon LLC*. A quick check of the public records showed the registered agent: Kevin Myers. Bryce’s college roommate.

Under Apex Horizon, there was only one asset: a luxury condo in Brooklyn.

I kept digging. I walked into Bryce’s home office. His desk smelled of cedar. In the bottom drawer, tucked deep beneath old tax files, I found a folded receipt from an upscale boutique in SoHo.

*Two Ralph Lauren shirts. One pair of denim shorts. Size 5T.*

The shipping address was the Brooklyn condo.

The recipient name was Stormi Lane.

My chest tightened so hard it hurt to breathe. Stormi Lane was Bryce’s executive assistant at my family's firm. She had worked for him for five years.

Five years. A five-year-old boy.

The pieces fell together with a sickening click.

I waited two days. I didn't scream. I didn't smash dishes.

On Thursday evening, I laid four items on the kitchen table.

The printed screenshot of the boy from the garage. The SoHo receipt for the 5T clothes. Five years of bank transfers to Apex Horizon.

And the Brooklyn lease agreement my lawyer had pulled that morning.

Bryce came home at six. He tossed his keys into the ceramic bowl by the door. "Maya? Do you want Italian tonight, or—"

He stopped.

He saw the papers.

I stood by the window, my hands resting lightly over my belly.

For three seconds, his face cycled through a silent movie. First confusion. Then recognition. Then, the smooth, rehearsed charm snapped back into place.

"Oh," he chuckled, pointing at the photo of the boy. "Did Frank show you that? I was going to tell you tonight. That's Neo. He's my cousin Sarah's kid. Sarah's going through a bad divorce, so I babysit him sometimes on weekends. He must have snuck out of the car when I parked—"

I didn't say a single word.

I reached out. With two fingers, I slid the lease agreement across the table toward him.

It was signed in his handwriting.

Dated four months before our wedding.

Bryce’s voice died in his throat. The smile fell off his face like wet paper. His mouth opened, closed, and all the color drained from his skin.

The mask was gone.
