Chapter 1 of When My Fated Alpha Believed Her Lies

I was twenty-one years old, and I had almost stopped hoping for a wolf.

The Omega elders told me to stand in the middle of the clearing. There were maybe nine of them, all gray at the temples, all wrapped in the kind of soft wool that survives too many winters. Someone had hung paper lanterns from the low branches. Someone else had brought a thermos of honey tea. This was what a Coming of Age looked like out here on the borderland — small, kind, and a little sad around the edges.

My name is Maya Gilbert. I tutor the orphan pups in the foothills outside Ironcrest territory. I have never had a rank. For years I have not had a wolf either, and most nights I had quietly made peace with that. A healer without an inner wolf was still useful. Useful was enough.

The ceremonial dress I wore was one I had sewn myself. White linen, simple seams, a band of pale embroidery at the hem because Mrs. Halloran had insisted. My feet were bare in the wet grass. The air smelled like pine sap and coming rain.

"Breathe slow, child," old Mrs. Halloran said. "If she comes, she comes. If she doesn't, you are still ours."

I closed my eyes.

At first, nothing. Just the cold under my heels and the small flutter of lantern paper.

Then — somewhere far below my ribs — a stirring. Like a creature turning over in deep water. My breath caught. The stirring became a pressure, and the pressure became a voice, and the voice was inside my skull, soft and astonished.

*Maya. I'm here. I've been here.*

I sank to my knees. The elders made a small sound around me, half gasp, half prayer. Something warm and electric rolled out of my skin in waves, and the air around me changed. I could smell it myself — wet jasmine, rain on warm stone, something green and gentle and entirely mine.

"Sweet Goddess," Mrs. Halloran whispered. "Child. Child, what a scent."

I was laughing. I was crying. My wolf — *my wolf* — pressed her nose against the inside of my chest and told me her name was Wren, and I said it out loud like a thank-you.

The wind shifted then. Carried the scent east, across the foothills, toward the dark ridgeline where the Alpha's compound sat like a crown on a hill that did not belong to me.

I did not think about that. Not yet.

---

I heard him before I saw him.

Branches breaking. A wolf's heavy, ragged breathing in the dark. The elders went still around me, the way deer go still. Then a shape burst through the tree line — half man, half shift, shoulders straining inside a torn shirt, eyes lit gold from within.

Alpha Gage Armstrong.

I had only ever seen him from a distance, at pack-wide events I attended from the back row. Up close he was bigger than I had understood. He came across the clearing at a dead run, and three feet from me his knees gave out and he dropped into the wet grass like a felled tree.

"*Mate.*"

The word tore out of him. Not asked. Not offered. *Torn.*

Inside my chest, Wren rose up and sang. The bond hit me a half-second later — a wash of light through every dark cellar room I had ever lived in. My fingers went numb. My mouth went dry. I looked down at this kneeling Alpha, this stranger, this man the Moon Goddess had apparently chosen for me, and for one unguarded, stupid, blazing moment I believed every story I had ever told the pups about love.

He reached for my hand. His fingers were shaking.

"I'm Maya," I said. It was the only thing I could think of to say.

"I know." His voice cracked around the words. "I know, I — *Goddess*, what is that scent —"

The elders were stepping back, giving us space, bowing their heads the way Omegas had been trained to bow for generations. I wanted to tell them to stop. I wanted to tell them this was my night, not his. But Wren was purring against my ribs, and Gage's thumb was sweeping over my knuckles like he was checking I was real, and I let the moment be what it was.

I should have known better.

---

She came through the trees ten minutes later.

Celine Mendoza. I knew her by reputation before I knew her by face — Ironcrest's golden daughter, the girl every pack member assumed would one day stand at Gage's side. She was dressed for an indoor evening, heels sinking slightly into the soft earth, a cream coat belted at her waist. She did not look surprised. She did not look anything.

She looked at Gage on his knees. She looked at my bare feet. She looked at the elders. And then she smiled — small, warm, perfectly composed.

"Gage," she said gently. "Sweetheart. People are looking for you."

He stood. He did not let go of my hand, but he stood, and I felt the first thread of the bond pull tight and then — strangely, subtly — slack. Like someone had loosened a knot I had not known I was leaning on.

"Come back to the house with me," Celine said. To him. Not to me. "We'll sort this out properly. The elders need their ceremony finished."

"Yes." His voice had already started to flatten. "Yes. Of course."

He looked at me one more time before he went. The gold in his eyes had dimmed. He did not say my name.

I stood barefoot in the wet grass and watched my fated mate walk away with another woman, and Mrs. Halloran put a quiet hand on my shoulder and said, "Drink your tea, child. The night isn't done."

---

It rained before dawn.

I lay on the narrow cot in my tutor's quarters and listened to it hit the tin roof. Wren was curled small and warm somewhere behind my heart, half-asleep, occasionally murmuring his name like a question. *Gage. Gage. Gage.* I pressed my palm flat against the wall and tried to ground myself.

I did not know yet what Celine was saying to him in the Alpha's study. I would learn later — from Nora Chen, from journals I had not started keeping — that she spoke very softly that night. That she used the word *herbal*. That she used the word *trickery*. That she reminded him, in the practiced intimacy of decades, how strange it was for an Omega to produce a scent that rare.

I did not know any of that yet.

What I knew, in the dark, was that the bond in my chest had gone quiet in a way that did not feel like sleep. It felt like a door someone had closed from the other side.

In two weeks there would be a Mate Ceremony. Senior pack members were already whispering. Allied Alphas were already writing. I could feel the shape of it forming around me even from out here on the fringe — the slow, careful building of a stage I was going to be asked to stand on.

I turned my face to the wall and made Wren a small, private promise.

*Whatever happens,* I told her, *we will still be useful. We will still be ours.*

She did not answer. She was listening to the rain.
