When My Ex Tried to Bury the Barnes Heiress Summary

Silas Ward strides into Adalee's former home wearing Italian leather and a cologne she doesn't recognize—sandalwood laced with something sharper, newer. He says her name like a line from a corporate memo, standing behind her wheelchair while his reflection watches from the window. Once, this mansion was hers. Now he moves through it like he owns the place, and maybe he does. Adalee refuses to turn around. She won't give him that. But the man who buried the Barnes heiress has returned, and the mystery of what he wants—and what he took—is only beginning.

Chapter 1 of When My Ex Tried to Bury the Barnes Heiress

I heard his footsteps before I saw him. The familiar cadence of his Italian leather shoes against the marble floors of what used to be my home. I didn't turn my wheelchair around. I didn't need to. The scent of his cologne—sandalwood and something sharper, newer—reached me first, cutting through the lingering traces of the lavender oil I used to keep the pain at bay.

Silas Ward walked into my living room like he owned it. Perhaps he did now.

'Adalee.' My name on his lips sounded foreign, like he was reading it from a corporate memo. He stood behind me, his reflection appearing in the window overlooking the garden. I watched his face there instead of turning to face him directly. His jaw was set, his eyes already looking past me, through me.

'I'm engaged to Lennon Myers.'

The words landed with the flat efficiency of a legal notice. No tremor in his voice. No hesitation. Just a statement of fact, delivered with the same tone he might use to announce a merger.

'I see,' I said, my own voice surprisingly steady. 'Congratulations.'

He moved then, circling around to stand in front of me. I kept my eyes on the window, on the garden where baby's breath once bloomed. He didn't look at my wheelchair—not once. His gaze swept over my shoulders, my hair, everything except the evidence of what he'd done to me.

'The engagement gala is at The Plaza next week. You'll attend.' It wasn't a request. 'You'll smile. You'll congratulate us. You won't cause a scene.'

I finally looked up at him. His face was the same one I'd memorized in college, the same one I'd thrown my body in front of to save. But his eyes had changed. They were colder now, calculating.

'Lennon will be moving in tomorrow,' he continued, checking his watch. 'We're making some changes to the house. Starting with the garden.'

Something flickered across his face—not quite guilt, not quite shame. Annoyance, perhaps. The inconvenience of having to inform me that I was being erased from my own home.

'I understand,' I said.

He nodded once, satisfied with my compliance, and turned to leave. 'Good. That's all I came to say.'

After he left, I sat in the silence of a house that no longer felt like mine, listening to the sound of his car pulling away. The perfume he'd brought with him—hers, I realized—lingered in the air, marking territory.

---

That evening, a soft knock at the service entrance startled me from my thoughts. I wheeled myself to the door, expecting perhaps the groundskeeper with some final indignity.

Instead, I found Miriam Tucker standing on the threshold.

Miriam, who had raised me after my mother died. Miriam, who had been more mother to me than any blood relation since childhood.

'Adalee,' she whispered, and then she stopped.

I watched her take me in—really see me—for the first time in five years. Her eyes moved from my face, gaunt and hollowed by pain I'd never admitted to, down to my wheelchair, and back up again. I saw the moment she registered the smell of another woman's perfume in my home.

Something broke in her expression. She stepped forward, then knelt beside my wheelchair, her weathered hands finding mine. She didn't speak. She didn't need to. The quiver in her lips, the sheen of tears she refused to let fall—it said everything.

We stayed like that, silent in the doorway, as the weight of five years pressed down between us.

---

'He never stopped looking for you,' Miriam said later, as we sat across from each other in the kitchen. The tea she'd made grew cold in our cups, untouched.

I stared at the window, watching night fall over the garden. 'I didn't want to be found.'

'He knows that.' Her voice was soft but certain. 'He kept your photograph on his desk every day, Adalee. Every single day.'

I smoothed the blanket across my lap, a habit I'd developed to anchor myself when the world felt too unsteady. 'And now?'

'Now he's waiting. He's always been waiting.' She leaned forward. 'But he won't force his way back into your life. You have to choose.'

I thought of Silas's cold announcement, of Lennon moving in, of my garden being torn apart. I thought of the years I'd spent convincing myself that devotion meant enduring cruelty.

'How long do I have before the gala?' I asked, still looking at the window.

Something in my voice must have changed. Miriam went very still.

'Three weeks,' she said carefully.

I nodded, my hand still smoothing the blanket. But now my fingers moved with purpose, with calculation.

'That should be enough time,' I said.

---

The next morning, I watched from the window as Silas brought Lennon to survey the garden. She was everything I wasn't—tall, willowy, mobile. Her laugh carried on the morning air as she crouched beside my baby's breath, the delicate white flowers I'd planted with such care.

'They're rather melancholy, don't you think?' she said, tilting her head in a performance of delicate sensitivity. 'I prefer red roses. They have such passion.'

Silas nodded immediately. 'We'll have them all removed today.'

I pressed my palm against the cool glass, watching as the groundskeeper began uprooting years of my care, my history, my memories.

When I wheeled myself outside to record the destruction on my phone, Silas appeared behind me.

'Don't make this ugly,' he said, and slapped the phone from my hand. It skidded across the stone path.

Miriam stepped forward to retrieve it. But Lennon moved faster, intercepting her with a smile that never reached her eyes.

'Let me help,' she said sweetly, and struck Miriam across the face with enough force to snap her head to the side.

Miriam didn't flinch. She straightened slowly, her eyes finding mine.

In that moment, as I watched Miriam absorb the blow meant to break me, something inside me shifted. The last thread of love I'd carried for Silas—the love that had kept me tethered to this place, to this pain—didn't fray.

It severed cleanly.

And what grew in its place was ice.
