Chapter 1 of They Fed Me Scraps, I Built Millions

Once I started my summer job, I noticed the food they left me at home always looked like something scraped off a plate.

Some nights I couldn't find a single piece of meat across four dishes, so I ate cold rice soaked in leftover sauce, washed up after, and lay awake past midnight with my stomach cramping.

I finally worked up the nerve to ask my mom, "Could you stop setting food aside for me? It's easier if I just get delivery. Otherwise I'm dead tired all day and still have to do the dishes."

She agreed easily enough, and the next day the plate was waiting for me exactly as always.

I shook my head and let it go. I told myself it was just their sweet, clumsy way of caring for me.

Then came a rare day off, and I ate at home. My mom made her usual spread, four dishes and a soup.

I reached my chopsticks toward the braised pork belly, and she knocked them away.

When I looked at her, confused, she pulled out a few pretty little dishes. "Your sister's getting home late. We have to save some for her."

The words caught in my throat. "Don't you always just save what's left over?"

My brother shot me a sour look. "What's left over is leftovers. Setting food aside isn't the same thing."

My dad nodded along, and the words I wanted to say, that leftovers were all I'd ever gotten, jammed in my throat. I couldn't swallow them and I couldn't spit them out.

I didn't yell, didn't make a scene. Inside I was only grateful I hadn't listened to my family and stayed local for college. I'd picked San Francisco instead, a thousand miles away.

……

The second my sister Maya Delgado walked in, my mom carried out a plate of food still warm from the pot.

In under a minute she was eating a hot, fresh meal.

My brother Michael Delgado stood at the edge of the table watching Maya wolf it down, and the doting in his eyes was so thick you could almost touch it.

"Slow down, nobody's going to take it from you. You were out with your friends, why didn't you grab something to eat first?"

Maya tipped her head back with the easy confidence of a girl who knows she's loved. "Mom always saves me food. If I don't come home to eat it, doesn't that waste all her trouble?"

My mom gave her a mock-scolding look, but her voice went soft. "You know exactly how to sweet-talk me."

My dad was watching TV, his eyes never leaving the screen, but at that cozy little exchange the corner of his mouth curved up.

And I stood off to the side like I wasn't there at all, unable to blend in, with no opening to say a word.

I looked at the four of them, at this warm little family, like I was watching a sitcom.

If I hadn't been one of them, that picture of a happy household might have moved me.

Halfway through her meal Maya frowned. "Mom, how come there's no soup today?"

Four dishes and a soup is the tradition in my house. Two dishes for Michael's taste, two for my parents'.

Maya likes everything, but the table has to have soup every day or the meal doesn't feel right to her.

My mom smacked her forehead like she'd forgotten something and carried a bowl out of the kitchen.

It had been ladled out on its own, not the thin dregs I usually got when I came home.

Pork rib soup with corn and carrots, all three there and none missing, the ribs hand-picked from the meatiest middle cuts.

They were stacked up in the bowl like a little mountain.

Not like the nights I had to sip and guess what soup the family had even had.

My fingertips went white where I gripped my chopsticks. For the first time in my whole life I understood what setting food aside really meant.

Not scraps and cold dregs, one used bowl and set of chopsticks left for whoever ate last to wash.

It wasn't that I was loved less. I wasn't loved at all.

When that thought surfaced, it didn't come as some sudden revelation. It came with a grief I could no longer lie my way past.

I could barely breathe. My chest heaved again and again, and I almost cried.

But for the sake of what little dignity I had left, I forced it down.

I couldn't keep sitting there watching them like some kind of self-punishment, so I made myself get up and drag my feet toward my room.

That was when my mom called me back.
