Chapter 1 of The Wife He Locked Away Came Back to Ruin Him

My husband spent the night with his therapist while I lay awake downstairs. He had chosen her because I had said no.

At sunrise, I asked Adrian Voss for a divorce.

By breakfast, the study had swallowed me whole.

The lock turned from the outside.

He told me he would teach me to want him again.

***

Fourteen hours of contract negotiations had left my skull throbbing when I unlocked the front door at ten thirty last night. I dropped my briefcase in the foyer, kicked off my pumps, and massaged the tension at the base of my neck.

Adrian was waiting at the top of the stairs. He wore an unbuttoned dress shirt, a tumbler of scotch resting in his hand.

"You're late," he said, descending into the hall.

"The merger closing took longer than expected," I said, unbuttoning my trench coat. "I'm exhausted, Adrian. I just need a shower and sleep."

He set his drink on the console table and closed the distance between us. His fingers gripped my jaw, tilting my face up with enough pressure to bruise. When he leaned down to kiss me, the smell of bourbon and cologne crowded out the air.

I turned my head. His lips grazed my cheek.

Adrian froze. His fingers dug deeper into my skin before dropping away.

"I asked for one thing when you took that senior partner track," he said, his tone chilling instantly. "That you remember you have a husband."

"I have a pulse, Adrian, not an endless reserve of stamina. I worked through the night."

"You treat me like an inconvenience," he hissed, his eyes narrowing. "You lie under me like an emotionless statue every time I touch you, and now you can't even offer that. You think your father's money makes you untouchable?"

"Don't start this tonight," I warned, stepping around him.

"I won't," he replied smoothly. "In fact, I called Corinne. She's coming over."

I stopped on the third step. "Dr. Hale? It's eleven o'clock at night."

"She provides emergency sessions for my impulse control. You know that. Since my own wife refuses to help me manage my stress, I have to rely on a professional."

The doorbell chimed right on cue.

Adrian walked past me to open it. Dr. Corinne Hale stood on the porch wearing a silk blouse and a pencil skirt that looked far too sharp for a late-night house call. Her blonde hair was pinned up, her notebook tucked beneath one arm.

"Adrian," she said softly, offering a sympathetic smile. Then her eyes drifted to me. "Camille. I'm sorry for the late hour. Adrian sounded very distressed on the phone."

"I'm going to sleep," I said flatly, refusing to play their game. "Take your session to his home office."

"Actually," Adrian said, resting a palm on Corinne's lower back, "we'll use the master suite. It's quieter."

I walked down the hall to the guest bedroom on the ground floor and slammed the door shut.

I tried to sleep. I pressed a pillow over my ears, staring at the ceiling as the digital clock flickered toward midnight. But the floorboards above me began to groan.

At first, it was muffled murmurs. Then came the rhythmic, unmistakable creak of our antique oak bedframe.

A cold numbness gripped my chest. I threw off the duvet, walked barefoot into the corridor, and climbed the staircase in silence.

The master bedroom door stood open two inches.

A shaft of amber lamplight spilled across the hardwood. Corinne was on her hands and knees in the center of our bed, her skirt bunched around her hips, her fingernails clawing into the Egyptian cotton sheets. Adrian stood behind her, his shirt discarded, driving hard into her with brutal, steady thrusts.

Corinne let out a ragged moan, arching her back.

Adrian didn't look down at her. His gaze tracked the hallway through the open crack in the door.

He saw me.

Our eyes locked through the opening. Instead of pulling away, a cruel sneer touched his lips. He grabbed Corinne by the hips, slamming into her with renewed force, and buried his face in the crook of her neck.

"Camille," he groaned loudly, his voice echoing off the walls. "Look what you made me do, Camille."

Corinne gasped beneath him, shuddering through her climax while Adrian watched me stand frozen in the dark.

I turned and walked back down the stairs.

I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I sat on the edge of the guest bed with my hands folded in my lap, listening to the creaking overhead continue until three in the morning. Every grunt, every slap of skin against skin, burned away whatever remnants of affection had survived the last five years of marriage.

By six, the house went quiet.

A car engine started in the driveway and faded into the distance.

At seven, I heard coffee brewing in the kitchen.

I washed my face, put my hair in a severe knot, and walked into the kitchen. Adrian sat at the marble island, freshly shaved, wearing a crisp charcoal suit. A plate of poached eggs and avocado toast sat across from him.

"You look terrible," he said without looking up from his tablet. "Go upstairs and change into that navy sheath dress before breakfast. We have a meeting with your father's board at ten."

"I'm not going to the board meeting," I said, standing on the other side of the island.

Adrian took a sip of black coffee. "Don't be childish, Camille. Whatever happened last night was a direct consequence of your neglect. Corinne understands my needs. You don't."

"I want a divorce."

His fork paused midway to his mouth. He set it down on the porcelain rim with a sharp click.

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me," I said, my voice steady. "I'm filing today. I'm removing my name from the title, and I've already drafted an email to my father. By noon, he'll suspend all joint capital allocations between Rowan Logistics and Voss Logistics."

Adrian's calm mask fractured. A muscle jumped in his jaw. The Voss family business relied on my father's distribution networks for over sixty percent of its shipping revenue.

"You wouldn't dare," he said, standing up. "You'd ruin the company over a tantrum?"

"It's not a tantrum. It's a clean break." I stepped back toward the foyer. "My lawyer will contact you by five."

Adrian stared at me for three long seconds. Then, terrifyingly, the anger drained from his features, replaced by a smooth, accommodating smile.

"Fine," he said, raising his hands in surrender. "If you're really that determined, let's look at the partnership contracts before you call your father. I have the signed covenants in the study. Let's make sure you aren't breaching fiduciary duty first."

I hesitated. "Bring them out here."

"They're eighty pages long, Camille. Don't act like a frightened child. Come inside for five minutes, review the exit clauses, and then you can leave."

He walked down the private hallway toward the heavy double doors of his private study. I followed him, keeping two paces behind, determined to finish this before nine o'clock.

The study smelled of polished mahogany and leather. Adrian walked toward the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves along the far wall and pressed a hidden latch beneath the third shelf.

A section of the bookcase clicked and swung outward, revealing a narrow opening lined with steel.

"What is that?" I asked, stopping instantly.

"The safe room," Adrian said, stepping aside. "The original documents are in the fireproof box inside. Take a look."

I took half a step forward, peering into the dim space.

Before I could turn, two heavy hands slammed into the middle of my back.

I stumbled forward, crying out as my knees struck a thin carpet. The heavy door slammed shut behind me with the thud of reinforced steel.

The mechanical lock engaged with a deafening clank.

"Adrian!" I screamed, lunging back and pounding both fists against the smooth metal surface. "Adrian, open this door!"

Silence answered.

I spun around, chest heaving. The room was no more than eight feet wide by ten feet long. Along one wall sat a narrow cot bolted to the floor, beside it a small stainless-steel sink and toilet. In the upper corner, a red recording light on a security camera stared down at me like an unblinking eye.

Mounted to the wall near the door was an old black landline. I ripped the handset off the cradle and pressed it to my ear.

Dead silence. No dial tone. The keypad numbers were completely blank, smoothed flat with resin.

A mechanical hiss sounded near the center of the door.

A horizontal panel slid open, five inches high, revealing Adrian's eyes through a steel mesh screen.

"You're insane," I choked out, pressing my face against the slot. "Let me out! My father knows I'm supposed to be at that meeting. People will look for me!"

"Your phone is currently sending a text from the airport," Adrian replied, his voice calm and entirely devoid of remorse. "You're taking a personal leave of absence to clear your head in Switzerland after catching your husband in an indiscretion. Everyone will understand why you need time alone."

"This is kidnapping! It's illegal!"

"This is marriage rehabilitation," he countered softly. His eyes narrowed through the mesh, dark and unyielding. "You forgot your place, Camille. You forgot who provides for you, and you forgot how to touch me."

He slid a bottle of water and a blister pack of protein bars through the hatch.

"You will learn to need me again," he said.

The metal slot snapped shut, cutting off the light.
