Chapter 3

Sienna POV

That morning, I made a silent vow: I would not wait for Julian Falcone.

But when I walked down the gravel driveway, tactical bag slung over my shoulder, he was already at the gates. Punctual. Waiting.

He wore fitted black combat gear that radiated the unyielding authority of a man born to command. The air around him felt thin, depleted.

We stood in strained silence, waiting for the transport. Julian inclined his head toward my bag.

"Why this particular retreat?"

A surge of foolish hope seized me. I unzipped the front pocket and pulled out my past tactical commendation medals—the ones I'd earned in grueling training exercises while he was busy running port operations.

I held them up, possessed by a desperate need to share this piece of myself with him. "I've been training. I'm actually—"

Julian didn't look. His attention was fixed on his encrypted phone, thumbs moving rapidly across the screen. A clear and absolute dismissal.

The warmth in my chest died. I lowered my hand and returned the medals to my bag.

The transport arrived with a hiss of pneumatic brakes. I stepped toward the doors.

"I'm taking my own chopper," Julian said from behind me.

I turned. He'd already slid his phone into his pocket and was walking away down the street. No explanation. No backward glance.

I boarded the cavernous transport alone.

The morning trials were brutal—ridge climbs, rope descents, live-fire drills with simunition rounds that left welts on exposed skin. I pushed my body to its limit and earned my first commendation badge before lunch.

In the afternoon, I set out for the upper trail. Halfway up the incline, I heard voices.

I slowed and stepped off the path, moving behind a thick cluster of pines.

Julian lounged on a sun-warmed boulder in the clearing below, entirely untroubled. His inner crew surrounded him. Chloe perched on a fallen log, leaning forward with a sly grin.

"Are you really going to the same university as Sienna?" she asked. "Just to play her bodyguard?"

I held my breath. My heart began a slow, heavy beat against my ribs.

Julian leaned back, his posture lazy and insufferably self-assured. He smirked.

"This time," he drawled, "I'm making my own choices."

He made no effort to deny that he wanted to be rid of me. He sounded relieved.

Hot, bitter shame scorched my throat.

I backed away through the undergrowth, retreating deep into the shadows until their voices faded to nothing.

That evening, I returned to the estate hollowed out and exhausted. But as I entered the living room, I stopped cold.

The Falcone family was visiting.

Julian stood in the center of the room, flanked by two heavy wooden crates of premium imported goods—a tribute to my father, the Consigliere. Carmela saw me and beamed.

"Sienna, sweetheart!" She crossed the room and clasped my hands. "How did your shared mountain trip with Julian go?"

Ice water flooded my veins.

I looked at Julian. He was staring at the floor.

The truth settled like a stone in my stomach: he'd skipped the training to lounge with his crew and had used my attendance as a cover story for his mother. Again.

I bit the inside of my cheek until I tasted copper. Then I assembled my features into a perfect smile, pulled out an old commendation badge from my pocket—the new one was lost somewhere on the mountain—and showed it to the mothers, playing the part of the dutiful daughter I'd been trained to be since birth.

After dinner, when the parents retreated to the patio, I cornered Julian in the poorly lit hallway.

I stepped inside his personal space—close enough to smell the expensive cologne and the faint trace of gunpowder that never quite washed out of his clothes.

"Stop using me as your shield," I hissed.

Julian's dark eyes widened with genuine panic. He grabbed my wrist. "What did you tell them?"

I tore my arm from his grasp. I looked at the man I'd loved my entire life, and for the first time, I felt nothing but a profound and weary exhaustion.

"I won't cover for you again."

I turned my back on him and walked away.
