Chapter 2
As Jenna looked at me in tears, Rachel calmly pushed my wheelchair aside and obediently helped her up the next second.
"Mom, didn't the doctor say that your heart is not good and you shouldn't get too excited? Taylor, we are going to live together for a long time. Don't stimulate Mom like that."
Andrew also stood beside me and nodded at me. His gaze flashed quickly on my legs, with a hint of vigilance and disdain in his eyes. "It's good that you're back. Take a seat and have a meal."
At the dining table, Eason and Nathan treated me as if I were invisible. Andrew maintained his authority as the head of the family, while Jenna warmly picked up dishes for me, almost piling up a small mountain in front of me.
"Taylor, I don't know what you like to eat. You are so thin. Eat more to gain weight."
The system's prompt sounded, "Beep. Detect a maximum Malice Points of 45 points from Rachel." At the same time, Nathan sneered.
"She can't tell the difference between good and bad food. Can a wild girl who grew up in a poor district tell the difference between blue lobster and roadside stall crayfish?"
There was a slight pause in my action, and Rachel was already looking at him with a half-annoyed, half-coquettish expression. "Nathan!" Then she smiled at me, half-charming and half-proud. "Taylor, Nathan has been spoiled by me since childhood. He's straightforward and quick-witted, with no ill intentions. You won't mind him, will you?"
Nathan pouted. "You're only eighteen, just two years older than me. How do you spoil me since I was little..." But there was clearly a hint of affection in his eyes.
It was clear at a glance to whom he was close.
I had no emotion at this scene that had already been repeated thirty-nine times in front of me, and I even felt like laughing.
I could even recite the next line of Rachel, "Taylor, why don't you say anything? Are you unhappy? Or... you don't want to see me?"
"If that was the case, I'm willing to leave the Klein family, leave my beloved parents and brothers, as long as Taylor can be happy..."
And then... I would face cold glares from my family, and Jenna would faint and be hospitalized due to excessive stimulation.
And I would also bear the blame for being unfilial and angering Jenna on the first day.
No one would explain the truth for me.
Even, they deliberately isolated me and alienated me to erase me, the disgraceful stain, from the perfect Klein family.
I was like the supporting character in the story while Rachel was the beloved female lead in it.
She was beautiful, pure-looking, excelled in ballet, piano, and painting, and was always surrounded by numerous young talents who admired her.
Even Eason and Nathan were among her many admirers.
If it weren't for the lack of childhood bond, they would probably not even be able to be noticed by her.
And I... I was just a control group used to contrast with Rachel's perfect life, and a stumbling block to test her sincere love.
The clichéd story began on the night I returned to the Klein family as the real daughter.
After eighteen years of living in the slums, suffering from abuse and hunger, I was finally told by Tony, the butler who came to my door on my eighteenth birthday, that I was the lost daughter of the richest family in LA, the Klein family, and he came to take me home.
Rachel, who had enjoyed a luxurious life in the wealthy family for eighteen years as the fake daughter, would continue to live at home because the Klein family couldn't bear to part with her.
I was the unsociable and unlikeable biological daughter, while she was the elegant and considerate daughter. Naturally, the Klein family favored Rachel.
And Rachel had explicitly and secretly used all means, framing, planting, bullying... trying to drive me out of this family again.
She didn't allow anyone to take away her love and halo.
And in the end, she succeeded.
In the storyline, our fate unfolded over and over again according to the predetermined trajectory.
Rachel stood at the pinnacle of life every time, surrounded by countless flowers, admiration, applause, and favoritism.
And I was repeatedly beaten down into the abyss, disgraced, crazy, and finally died miserably in a deserted alley where no one cared.
Chapter 3
I had tried to put away my own unnecessary jealousy and triumphalism, and just wanted to leave this family and live my own life.
But fate, like an invisible hand, always brought me back to the same doomed path due to various twists and turns.
I died again and again in that night of thunderstorm, in that stinking alley, amidst the malicious laughter and bullying of the punks.
And this time, the only variable was that I lost my legs and beauty, but gained... an upgraded system.
This might be my only chance to turn things around.
At this moment, I grabbed Rachel's hand with affection and tears in my eyes when Rachel said that familiar phrase, "If that's the case, I'm willing to leave the Klein family..."
"How could you think like this? You are the master of this family. Even if there is no blood relationship, you have already become an inseparable part of this family. In comparison, I'm just an outsider. How can I have the right to be unhappy?"
"Moreover, my adoptive father, that is, your biological father was imprisoned for fraud when we were six years old. My adoptive mother, that is, your biological mother ran away with her lover when we were eight years old. I heard she had three sons. Where else can you go if you leave the Klein family?"
"It doesn't matter to me. I've lived a hard life for so many years and have grown up well. Even if I'm in a wheelchair, I can support myself by working."
"But you were born with brocade clothes and jade food and haven't suffered half a bit. How can you live such a difficult life?"
In her open-mouthed expression, I blinked and dropped a tear. "Besides, I'm just a disabled person with paralyzed legs. How can I be a child of the Klein family? Wouldn't it be a disgrace to you?"
"I came here today just to see what my blood relatives look like. I never expected to join you or take away Rachel's love. The eighteen years of absence can't be easily erased. I'm not that naive."
"After finishing this meal, I will go back to my old house. No one will know about me and I won't cause any trouble for you."
"You can just pretend that I don't exist and let life go back to the way it was."
Rachel was naive and her eyes brightened in an instant. She looked at my sincere expression with half expectation and half scepticism. Before she could ask me, Andrew and Eason instinctively interrupted her, "No!"
I looked at the flickering lights in their eyes and lowered my gaze without a word.
I wasn't naive enough to expect that they had any feelings for me.
Unlike the guilt and tenderness in Jenna's eyes, Andrew was only concerned about his reputation.
He couldn't tolerate having a daughter with a disabled leg who was not outstanding, nor could he tolerate his daughter living in a place like a slum.
It would undoubtedly be a disgrace to him.
The best ending he set for me was to live a worry-free and insignificant life in the Klein family.
As for Eason... My older brother, who looked like outstanding among people, had long had inappropriate thoughts about Rachel.
And my appearance allowed his thoughts of many years to become a reality.
Even if he didn't like me, he still needed me as a tool to give his filth a legitimate cover.
Rachel, however, didn't know about all these twists and turns inside.
She only saw that her usually distant older brother seemed to have a different look at me. Her eyes turned red, but she forced a smile that revealed a sense of loss, "Taylor is just joking. Of course, we welcome you back."
Then she took out a very familiar VIP ticket from her pocket and handed it to me, "Taylor, you came back just in time. Tomorrow night I'm going to have my first dance performance as a leading lady. Make sure you attend with my beloved mum, dad and brothers."
I knew that she was asserting her sovereignty and also belittling my undignified disability.
I lowered my head to look at my ill-behaved legs and smiled at her slightly, "Of course."
