Chapter 1 of The Pen I Slid Across the Signing Table

My husband's father died in my arms while his son texted from a club.

Nine years I lived in that house, and the boy I raised never once called me anything but a placeholder for a mother who'd walked out and never come back.

"My real mom cooks it better," Dorian said, every single meal, for nine years.

Theo made CEO last spring, and his first signature shut down my legal department.

"To avoid the appearance of nepotism," he told the room, not looking at me.

Dorian handed me the divorce papers himself, across the same kitchen table where I'd fed him a thousand dinners.

"About time you left," he said.

I didn't ask for a cent.

I took one ledger, one mortgage copy, and I walked.

What they didn't know is that I'd already mortgaged my own apartment to save that company once, and I'd kept the receipt.

Nine months later, the firm across the table launched a hostile takeover of Calvert Logistics.

The due diligence was mine. The deal terms were mine. The earn-out loophole that gutted them—mine.

On signing day, Theo and Dorian sat on the seller's side, and their hands were not steady.

I slid a pen across the table, the same way Dorian once slid those papers to me.

"Nine years ago I signed into your family," I said.

"Today you work for me—and you're signing your company away."

"Push the loan extension to Friday," Theo muttered into his phone, turning his back to the empty hospital mattress. "I do not care what the underwriters want. Tell them I will sign the guarantee personally."

His father's body had been wheeled to the morgue twenty minutes ago.

I stood on the opposite side of the room, gripping a worn leather ledger. Two years of hospital bills, specialist fees, and private nursing costs filled the pages. On the inside cover, the old man's shaky handwriting stared up at me in blue ink: For Sabine, the only one who stayed.

By the door, Theo's fifteen-year-old son, Dorian, slouched against the frame. His thumbs flew across his phone screen, leveling up a character in some fantasy game. He had not looked up once since the heart monitor flatlined.

"Dorian," I said, my voice dry. "Do you want to say goodbye before they lock the ward?"

"To an empty bed?" He kept his eyes on the glowing screen. "Grandpa is gone. Staring at a mattress will not bring him back."

Theo ended his call and slid the phone into his tailored suit pocket. "He is right. The nurses need to clear the room for the next patient. Let us go."

Not a single tear from either of them.

"They are still processing the death certificate," I told my husband. "We should wait."

"The lawyers can handle the paperwork," Theo said, checking his silver wristwatch. "I have a crisis at the office. The creditors are circling."

A young nurse peeked into the room, holding a plastic bag containing the old man's watch and wedding ring. Theo waved her away, pointing directly at me.

"Give that to my wife," Theo instructed the nurse. "She handles the personal items."

I pressed my thumb against the back of the ledger. Beneath the thick cardboard cover rested a folded document. Nine years ago, when Calvert Industries faced bankruptcy, I sat in a downtown notary's office and signed away my dowry—a riverside apartment on 8th Avenue. One point eight million dollars to keep Theo's family business alive.

That mortgage copy burned against my palm.

"Go," I said, staring at the indentation on the pillow where his father's head had rested. "I will finish here."

Theo did not argue. He walked out, his leather shoes quiet on the linoleum. Dorian followed, not bothering to say goodbye to me either.

Two hours later, the silence in our dining room felt heavier than the hospital ward.

I set a ceramic bowl of heated chicken soup on the mahogany table. Steam curled into the cold air.

Dorian shoved the bowl away. The yellow broth sloshed over the rim, staining the linen mat.

"My mom makes this better than you," he said.

Nine years. I had cooked, cleaned, and raised him since he was six, and every meal ended with a variation of this exact sentence. His biological mother had left them for a tech billionaire, yet in Dorian's eyes, I was merely the unpaid help trying to steal her place.

I did not reach for a towel to wipe up the spill. I did not argue. I just dragged my fingernail down the edge of the ledger resting next to my plate, pressing a sharp crease into the paper.

"Then you should ask her to cook for you," I said evenly.

"Maybe I will," Dorian shot back. He stood up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor. "She actually cares about what I like. She bought me the new console yesterday. You just pretend to care because you want my dad's money."

I looked at the worn ledger. If Dorian only knew the truth about who was funding his private school tuition.

"Eat your dinner, Dorian."

"I am ordering pizza," he sneered, grabbing his jacket from the back of the chair. He walked toward the front door, pulling his hood over his head. "Do not wait up. I am going to a friend's house."

The front door slammed shut.

I sat alone. The soup cooled.

Keys rattled in the lock just after nine o'clock.

Theo stepped inside, tossing his briefcase onto the entryway bench. He loosened his silk tie, his jaw tight. He did not walk into the kitchen to check on me. He did not ask how I was holding up after watching his father take his last breath.

"The company board is deciding on the CEO next week," he said, walking straight to the liquor cabinet in the living room. He poured two fingers of scotch. "You need to keep quiet about money for the next few days. Do not mention anything to the wives at the country club."

I walked out of the dining room and looked at him. The man I had bankrupted myself for.

"Your father died today, Theo."

He downed the scotch. "And Calvert Industries is still breathing. That is what he would care about."

"You are worried the board will think we are insolvent."

"I am telling you to play the part of the supportive wife," he snapped, setting the glass down hard on the crystal tray. "Marcus and Julian are looking for any excuse to push me out. No complaints about hospital bills. No whining about the estate taxes. Just smile and keep your mouth shut until I have the CEO title officially secured."

"The private nurses need to be paid for their final week," I told him, keeping my tone perfectly flat. "The credit card was declined this morning."

Theo rubbed his temples. "Figure it out, Sabine. Borrow it from your sister. Sell one of your handbags. I cannot have any red flags on our accounts right now. The board is auditing everything."

He wanted me to sell a handbag to pay for his father's deathbed care.

"You want me to beg my family for money," I asked, "so you can look good for the board?"

"I want you to do your job as my wife and handle the domestic issues without bothering me," he said coldly. "I am fighting for my life at that company."

He walked past me, heading for the stairs.

"I have a headache," he muttered, not looking back. "Sleep in the guest room tonight. I need absolute quiet."

I watched his back disappear around the landing.

The marriage was over. I knew it. He just did not know I knew it yet.

There was no need to flip the dining table. No need to scream at him until my throat bled. He had shown me exactly what I meant to him—a shield for his reputation, a wallet for his emergencies, and a nuisance when he wanted peace.

I walked back into the dining room. The house was completely silent, save for the hum of the refrigerator.

I sat down at the table and placed my hand over the ledger. I pulled the folded mortgage copy from beneath the thick cardboard cover.

The paper felt crisp against my fingertips. I raised it halfway toward the chandelier, the watermark of the notary seal faintly visible through the page. One point eight million dollars. The debt he thought was forgiven. The apartment he thought was safely his.

On the table, my phone screen lit up, vibrating against the wood.

A message notification flashed.
