Chapter 1

Lyra's POV

The Moon Goddess was supposed to bless tonight.

Instead, she destroyed me.

I stood before the towering Black Moon Pack Hall, my trembling fingers smoothing the silver fabric of the dress my mother had sewn by hand before she died. It wasn't the finest dress among the unmated wolves gathered for the annual Moon Ceremony, but it was the only thing I had left of her.

"Tonight," she'd once whispered while brushing my hair, "the Moon Goddess will lead your mate to you. Never doubt her plan."

I had believed every word.

For twenty-one years, I dreamed of this moment. Every girl in the pack did. We imagined the first spark when our eyes met our fated mate's, the warmth of the bond wrapping around our souls, and the promise that we would never be alone again.

I clutched the small crescent moon pendant hanging around my neck.

"Please," I whispered to the glowing full moon above. "Let tonight be everything she promised."

Around me, laughter echoed through the courtyard. Young wolves chatted excitedly while elders smiled proudly. Musicians played soft melodies, and servants carried trays filled with food and wine.

Everyone looked happy.

Everyone except me.

As an orphan raised by the pack, I had learned long ago that happiness always seemed to belong to someone else.

"Lyra!"

I turned as my best friend, Ava, hurried toward me with a bright smile.

"You made it!" she exclaimed, pulling me into a hug. "I was worried you'd hide in your room."

"I almost did."

She laughed softly.

"Don't be nervous. What if your mate is handsome? Or rich? Or maybe even one of the Alpha's warriors?"

I forced a smile.

"What if he isn't?"

"Then you'll love him anyway."

I wished I shared her confidence.

A deep horn suddenly echoed across the courtyard.

Silence fell.

The crowd parted as warriors lined both sides of the stone pathway.

My heart skipped.

"The Alpha..."

Everyone bowed their heads.

Heavy footsteps approached.

I slowly lifted my eyes.

And then...

I saw him.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

Dressed in a black ceremonial suit embroidered with silver wolves.

His dark hair moved gently in the night breeze, and his piercing blue eyes seemed capable of freezing the air itself.

Alpha Kael Blackthorne.

The most feared Alpha in the Northern Territories.

Every woman admired him.

Every warrior respected him.

Every enemy feared him.

The moment our eyes met...

My breath disappeared.

A powerful warmth exploded inside my chest.

My wolf surged forward with overwhelming excitement.

Mate...

The word echoed inside my mind like thunder.

My knees nearly gave out.

"No..."

It couldn't be.

The Alpha?

The Moon Goddess had chosen him?

Across the courtyard, Kael suddenly froze.

His sharp eyes widened for the briefest second.

I watched his jaw tighten.

His fists clenched.

He felt it too.

He was my mate.

Joy burst through me so quickly that tears blurred my vision.

The Moon Goddess hadn't forgotten me after all.

Slowly, I stepped forward.

One step.

Then another.

Every heartbeat filled me with hope.

Around us, whispers spread through the crowd.

"The Alpha found his mate..."

"Who is she?"

"It's Lyra..."

"The orphan?"

I ignored them.

Nothing mattered anymore.

Not the whispers.

Not the stares.

Only him.

When I finally stopped a few feet away, my hands shook.

"Alpha..." I whispered.

Kael stared at me with unreadable eyes.

For one beautiful second...

I imagined he would smile.

Instead...

His face turned cold.

Colder than winter.

Colder than death itself.

My wolf whimpered.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Kael stepped closer.

"So..."

His deep voice cut through the silence.

"The Moon Goddess has a cruel sense of humor."

The happiness inside me cracked.

"W-What?"

His eyes traveled over my simple dress with open disgust.

"You?"

Each word felt like a knife.

"My mate is an orphan?"

Gasps erupted from the crowd.

Heat flooded my face.

I lowered my head, unable to bear the hundreds of eyes fixed on me.

"I..." My voice shook. "I didn't choose this."

"No."

He laughed bitterly.

"But I can choose whether I accept it."

Fear crawled through my body.

"No..."

Please...

Don't say it.

Kael turned to face the entire pack.

His voice rang across the courtyard.

"I, Alpha Kael Blackthorne..."

Time seemed to stop.

"...reject Lyra Ashwood as my fated mate."

The world shattered.

Pain unlike anything I had ever imagined exploded through my soul.

It felt as though invisible claws ripped my heart into pieces.

My wolf screamed inside my mind.

I collapsed to my knees, unable to breathe.

Tears streamed uncontrollably down my face.

The sacred mate bond...

Rejected.

Broken.

Around me, the crowd erupted into whispers.

"I can't believe he rejected her."

"How humiliating..."

"The poor girl..."

I barely heard them.

My entire world had fallen apart.

Then...

A pair of expensive black heels stopped in front of me.

I looked up through blurred vision.

A breathtaking woman stood beside Kael, her arm wrapping possessively around his.

She smiled.

Not kindly.

Cruelly.

Triumph sparkled in her emerald eyes.

"You should know your place, orphan," she whispered so only I could hear. "An Alpha deserves a Luna worthy of standing beside him."

She leaned closer.

"And that will never be you."

My fingers curled into fists.

Before I could respond, Kael did something that destroyed the last piece of my heart.

He slipped his arm around her waist.

"My future Luna," he announced.

The crowd applauded.

Every clap echoed like another crack in my soul.

I realized then...

I wasn't just rejected.

I had been replaced.

As I struggled to stand, desperate to escape the humiliation, a sudden, unfamiliar voice echoed inside my mind.

Run, Lyra...

I froze.

That wasn't my wolf.

The voice came again, stronger this time.

Run now... because they're about to kill you.

The warning echoed through my head again, louder this time.

Run, Lyra... They're coming.

My pulse pounded in my ears.

I looked around wildly. The cheers for Alpha Kael and his chosen Luna continued as though I no longer existed. No one noticed the terror flooding my veins.

Then I saw them.

Three warriors had quietly stepped away from the celebrating crowd. Their eyes were fixed on me, their expressions hard and unreadable. One of them rested a hand on the hilt of the dagger strapped to his belt.

My wolf whimpered.

"They're not here to help us," she whispered inside my mind.

I staggered backward, my legs weak from the pain of the rejection.

Kael's gaze flickered toward me for the briefest moment. Our eyes met across the courtyard. For just a heartbeat, I thought I saw hesitation... perhaps even regret.

Then he looked away.

He turned his back on me.

The last thread of hope inside me snapped.

I spun around and ran.

Ignoring the cries behind me, I pushed through the crowd and sprinted toward the dark forest beyond the pack borders. Branches clawed at my arms, stones cut into my bare feet, but I didn't stop.

Behind me, a voice roared through the night.

"Don't let her escape!"

The sound of pounding footsteps exploded from the trees.

They were chasing me.

Chapter 2

Lyra's POV

The cold night air burned my lungs as I ran.

Branches lashed against my face, tearing at my skin, but I didn't slow down. The pain in my chest from Kael's rejection was far worse than the scratches covering my arms.

Every step felt like my heart was breaking all over again.

Behind me, the forest echoed with shouts.

"There!"

"She's heading north!"

"Don't lose her!"

They weren't trying to bring me back.

They were hunting me.

Tears blurred my vision as I stumbled over a tree root and crashed to the ground. My palms scraped against rough stones, and a sharp cry escaped my lips.

"No..." I whispered, struggling to my feet.

I couldn't die.

Not like this.

The mysterious voice returned, calm but urgent.

Keep moving. Trust me.

"Who are you?" I gasped.

There was no answer.

Only silence.

A low growl rumbled somewhere behind me.

My wolf trembled.

"They're shifting," she whispered.

My heart nearly stopped.

The warriors weren't just chasing me anymore.

They had become wolves.

Massive shadows darted between the trees, their glowing eyes cutting through the darkness.

I turned and ran harder.

The forest grew thicker with every step. Twisted branches blocked the moonlight, leaving only thin beams of silver shining through the leaves.

My breathing became ragged.

I couldn't keep this up.

Then something caught my ankle.

I screamed as I tumbled down a steep slope, rolling over rocks and roots until I slammed into the base of an enormous oak tree.

Everything spun.

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

Warm blood trickled from my forehead.

The pounding footsteps were getting closer.

"Spread out!" one of the warriors shouted from above.

"She can't have gone far."

Panic surged through me.

I crawled behind the thick trunk, pressing a trembling hand over my mouth to quiet my breathing.

Three wolves appeared at the top of the slope.

Their noses lifted into the air.

They were catching my scent.

The first wolf started down the hill.

Then the second.

The third let out a long, terrifying howl.

My wolf whimpered.

"We're going to die."

"No," I whispered, though I wasn't sure I believed it.

Suddenly, the crescent moon pendant around my neck grew warm.

I frowned.

It had belonged to my mother.

It had never done anything before.

The warmth spread across my chest until it felt almost like fire.

A soft silver glow escaped from the pendant.

"What...?"

The light wrapped around me like mist.

The wolves stopped.

Confused, they sniffed the air again.

One growled in frustration.

"I can't smell her anymore," a human voice said.

"She was right here!"

Another snarled.

"Keep looking!"

I stared at the glowing pendant in disbelief.

It had hidden my scent.

My mother's necklace had just saved my life.

Who... had she really been?

Before I could think further, the mysterious voice returned.

Good. Now go deeper into the forest. Your answers are waiting.

I swallowed hard.

Every elder in the pack had warned us never to enter the Forbidden Forest.

No wolf who crossed its border ever returned.

But staying here meant certain death.

I took one shaky step toward the ancient trees.

Then another.

The air changed immediately.

The forest became unnaturally silent.

No insects.

No birds.

No wind.

Only the sound of my heartbeat.

A strange fog curled around my feet as I walked farther in.

The trees grew taller, their trunks wider than houses.

An eerie blue light flickered between them.

I should have turned back.

Instead, something pulled me forward.

Almost... as if the forest recognized me.

After several minutes, I reached a small clearing.

In its center stood a stone altar covered in glowing symbols.

The moment my foot crossed into the clearing, the symbols burst to life.

A blinding silver light erupted from the altar.

The ground shook violently.

Cracks spread across the ancient stone.

Then...

A deep, powerful voice echoed through the clearing.

"At last..."

I froze.

The voice did not come from behind me.

It came from beneath the altar.

"...the last heir has returned."

The voice echoed through the clearing, deep enough to make the ground tremble beneath my feet.

"At last... the last heir has returned."

My breath caught in my throat.

"Heir?" I whispered.

The word made no sense.

I had no family.

No title.

No inheritance.

I was just Lyra Ashwood-the orphan everyone pitied and the girl Alpha Kael had rejected before the entire pack.

The silver light pouring from the altar intensified until I had to shield my eyes.

Then, just as suddenly, it faded.

A figure slowly emerged from the mist.

She wasn't entirely human.

Her body shimmered like moonlight reflecting on water, her long silver hair drifting around her although there was no wind. Her glowing eyes settled on me with an expression that felt strangely familiar.

"You've grown so much," she said softly.

I instinctively stepped back.

"Who are you?"

A sad smile crossed her lips.

"I made a promise to your mother that I would watch over you."

My heart stopped.

"You knew my mother?"

"I did."

Tears stung my eyes.

"No one ever talks about her. They only say she died when I was a baby."

"They lied."

The words struck me harder than Kael's rejection.

"What?"

"Your mother did not simply die, Lyra."

I stared at her, unable to breathe.

"She was hunted."

The clearing fell silent.

"Hunted... by who?"

Before the woman could answer, the pendant around my neck glowed once more.

She reached out, gently touching it with the tips of her fingers.

"This pendant was never meant to be ordinary. It is a seal."

"A seal?"

"It hid your scent... your blood... and your true identity from those who wished your family extinct."

My knees weakened.

"You're lying."

"I wish I were."

She looked toward the dark forest surrounding us, her expression suddenly tense.

"They're getting closer."

Almost on cue, distant howls echoed through the trees.

The warriors had found the clearing.

Fear gripped my chest.

"They'll kill me."

"They'll certainly try."

She raised her hand, and the glowing symbols carved into the altar blazed with silver fire.

"But tonight is not your night to die."

The earth rumbled beneath us.

Ancient cracks spread across the altar as if something inside had been asleep for centuries.

The woman looked directly into my eyes.

"Your blood has awakened the old magic."

The howls grew louder.

Heavy footsteps thundered toward the clearing.

"They're here!" one warrior shouted.

"I found her!"

I spun toward the forest entrance.

More than a dozen wolves burst through the trees, their fangs bared and eyes burning with bloodlust.

The lead wolf shifted into his human form.

It was one of Alpha Kael's elite warriors.

"There she is," he sneered. "The Alpha gave you a chance to leave with your dignity. Instead, you chose to run."

"I didn't-"

"Orders are orders."

He drew a long silver blade.

"You won't leave this forest alive."

The silver-haired woman stepped in front of me.

"You dare spill royal blood on sacred ground?"

The warrior frowned.

"Royal... blood?"

His eyes snapped toward me, confusion replacing his arrogance.

Before he could ask another question, the altar exploded with blinding light.

A deafening roar shook the entire forest.

The ground split open beneath our feet.

Massive silver chains burst from the earth, wrapping around the warriors and their wolves.

Panic erupted.

"What is this?"

"I can't move!"

The chains tightened.

The woman's expression darkened as she looked at me.

"Listen carefully, Lyra. You don't have much time."

"What is happening?"

"Everything you believed about yourself is a lie. Your mother wasn't an ordinary she-wolf... and neither are you."

My heart hammered against my ribs.

"Then... who am I?"

Before she could answer, a wave of terrifying power swept across the clearing.

The chains shattered.

The warriors were free.

But they weren't looking at me anymore.

They were staring into the darkness behind us.

Their faces turned pale with fear.

One of them dropped his sword.

"N-No..."

"It can't be..."

Slow, deliberate footsteps echoed from the shadows.

A pair of glowing crimson eyes opened in the darkness.

Then a deep, commanding voice sent a chill through every soul in the clearing.

"So... after twenty-one years..."

The voice paused, filled with dangerous amusement.

"...I have finally found my daughter."

Chapter 3

ra's POV

"I have finally found my daughter."

The words echoed through the clearing, stealing the air from my lungs.

My daughter?

"No..." I whispered, shaking my head. "You're mistaken."

The crimson-eyed stranger stepped out of the shadows.

He was unlike any werewolf I had ever seen.

He stood well over six feet tall, his broad shoulders wrapped in a long black cloak that brushed the forest floor. His dark hair framed a striking face marked by an old scar across his left eyebrow. Power rolled off him in waves, so overwhelming that every warrior in the clearing instinctively lowered their heads.

Even the wolves whimpered.

The silver-haired woman bowed respectfully.

"My King."

King?

I stared at her in disbelief.

There hadn't been a werewolf king for generations.

At least... that's what I had always been told.

The stranger's crimson eyes softened as they settled on me.

"You have your mother's eyes."

My heart pounded painfully.

"You knew my mother?"

A shadow crossed his face.

"I loved her."

Silence.

Every thought in my head came to a halt.

"What... did you say?"

"I am Ronan."

He took another step toward me.

"Your father."

My knees nearly gave way.

"No."

The word escaped as a whisper.

"No, my father died before I was born."

"That is the lie they wanted you to believe."

I backed away until my shoulders hit the ancient altar.

"I don't know you."

"I know."

His expression was filled with sorrow.

"And that is my greatest failure."

One of Kael's warriors suddenly laughed.

"What ridiculous nonsense!"

He pointed his silver sword toward Ronan.

"There is no king. There hasn't been one for hundreds of years."

The warrior charged.

Everything happened in a single heartbeat.

Ronan didn't move.

He simply looked at the charging warrior.

An invisible force slammed into the man, throwing him across the clearing like a rag doll.

He crashed into a massive tree with a sickening crack before collapsing unconscious.

The remaining warriors froze.

Fear spread across their faces.

"Monster..."

Ronan's gaze shifted to them.

"If I wished you dead," he said calmly, "none of you would still be breathing."

Not one of them dared answer.

He turned back to me.

"Lyra, come with me."

"No."

The answer came instantly.

"I don't even know who you are."

"You will."

"I have nothing to say to you."

Pain flashed across his face.

"I deserve your anger."

"You deserve nothing from me."

My voice broke.

"For twenty-one years I was alone."

Tears burned my eyes.

"I was mocked because I had no parents."

I clenched my fists.

"I buried the only woman I believed was my mother."

"I was rejected by my mate."

My breathing became uneven.

"And now you suddenly appear, expecting me to believe you're my father?"

Ronan remained silent.

When he finally spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper.

"I searched for you every single day."

I laughed bitterly.

"You were too late."

His shoulders fell.

"Yes."

The single word carried decades of regret.

Before either of us could speak again, the silver-haired woman suddenly gasped.

"My King..."

Her eyes widened.

"They've found us."

Ronan's expression hardened.

"The hunters."

The air grew heavy.

A terrifying pressure spread through the forest.

Even the birds that had begun to sing moments earlier fell silent once more.

The ground trembled beneath my feet.

From every direction, cloaked figures emerged between the trees.

There were dozens of them.

Each wore black armor engraved with a symbol I had never seen before-a wolf surrounded by crimson flames.

The warriors from Black Moon Pack looked terrified.

One whispered, "The Blood Order..."

The leader removed his hood.

His icy blue eyes landed on me.

Then he smiled.

"There she is."

He looked directly at Ronan.

"You've saved us years of searching."

Ronan stepped in front of me, shielding me with his body.

"You'll never touch her."

The stranger laughed.

"You know why we've come."

His smile disappeared.

"The last royal heir dies tonight."

He slowly drew a sword forged from shimmering black metal.

The blade pulsed with dark energy.

Every instinct inside me screamed that this weapon was different.

Dangerous.

Deadly.

The silver-haired woman grabbed my wrist.

"Run!"

"But-"

"Now!"

Ronan didn't look back.

His eyes never left the growing army surrounding us.

"I'll hold them off."

"I just found you," I cried.

"I'm not leaving you!"

For the first time since he appeared, he smiled.

It was small.

Sad.

But filled with love.

"If fate is kind..."

His crimson eyes met mine.

"...this won't be our last goodbye."

The leader of the Blood Order lifted his sword toward the sky.

"Kill them all."

At once, dozens of warriors lunged forward.

Ronan's body erupted in blinding silver light.

The force of it blasted through the clearing like a storm. Leaves spiraled into the air, ancient trees groaned, and the warriors of the Blood Order were thrown backward.

I shielded my eyes with my arm.

When the light faded, a gigantic silver wolf stood where Ronan had been.

He was unlike any werewolf I had ever seen.

His fur shimmered like liquid moonlight, and crimson markings glowed across his massive body. His eyes burned the same deep red as they had in his human form, radiating both power and fury.

The forest fell silent.

Even the warriors of the Blood Order hesitated.

"The Royal Wolf..." one of them whispered in horror.

"So the legends were true."

The leader's expression hardened.

"Don't fear him! Kill the king and seize the heir!"

More than twenty warriors charged at once.

Ronan leaped forward with a deafening roar.

The earth shook beneath his paws.

With one swipe of his enormous claws, three attackers were hurled through the air, crashing into nearby trees. Another tried to strike from behind, but Ronan spun, his powerful tail knocking the warrior unconscious before he could land a blow.

The clearing erupted into chaos.

Steel clashed against claws.

Growls mixed with screams.

Magic flashed through the darkness.

I had never witnessed such a battle.

The silver-haired woman pulled me behind the altar.

"You must leave now."

"I can't!" I cried, tears streaming down my face. "He's fighting because of me!"

"He is fighting because you're his daughter."

Her voice softened.

"And because he has waited twenty-one years for this moment."

Another explosion rocked the clearing.

A blast of dark energy slammed into Ronan's side, forcing the great wolf to stumble.

"No!" I screamed.

The Blood Order's leader smiled cruelly.

"He's weakening."

He raised his black sword.

"Again!"

Five warriors stretched out their hands, chanting in a language I didn't understand.

Dark chains burst from the ground and wrapped around Ronan's legs and neck.

The great wolf struggled, snarling as the chains tightened.

For the first time, fear crept into my heart.

They were overpowering him.

The silver-haired woman grabbed my shoulders.

"Listen to me carefully, Lyra."

I forced myself to look at her.

"The pendant your mother gave you is more than a family keepsake. It is the key to an ancient power that sleeps within your blood."

"I don't understand."

"You don't have to-not yet."

She gently closed my fingers around the glowing pendant.

"When the time comes, your heart will awaken it."

A piercing howl echoed across the clearing.

I looked up just in time to see Ronan tear two of the chains apart.

The remaining chains still held him.

The leader of the Blood Order strode forward, lifting his sword high.

"This ends tonight."

He drove the blade toward Ronan's heart.

Without thinking, I broke free from the silver-haired woman's grip.

"No!"

I ran straight into the battlefield.

"Lyra!" she shouted behind me.

The Blood Order leader turned toward me.

His cruel smile widened.

"So the heir comes willingly."

He changed direction, swinging the sword toward me instead.

Everything slowed.

I saw the blade racing toward my chest.

I heard Ronan's desperate roar.

I felt the pendant around my neck become unbearably hot.

Then-

A burst of silver light exploded from my body.

The force sent every warrior flying.

The black sword shattered into hundreds of glittering fragments before it could touch me.

A wave of energy rippled through the entire forest.

The ancient trees bowed as though honoring a forgotten queen.

The glowing symbols on the altar blazed brighter than the moon itself.

Every werewolf in the clearing-including the warriors from Black Moon Pack-dropped to one knee.

Their wolves whimpered in submission.

I stared at my trembling hands.

Silver light danced across my skin before fading away.

"What... what did I just do?"

The silver-haired woman looked at me with tears in her eyes.

"It has begun."

The Blood Order leader slowly climbed to his feet, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.

Instead of looking frightened...

He laughed.

A cold, triumphant laugh.

"Excellent."

His gaze locked onto mine.

"We no longer have to guess."

He wiped the blood from his lips and smiled.

"The Moon Princess has awakened."

Those words sent a chill through everyone in the clearing.

Ronan's crimson eyes widened in horror.

"No..."

He lunged toward me with all the strength he had left.

But he was too late.

A circle of black flames erupted beneath my feet.

The ground vanished.

I screamed as I was swallowed by darkness.

The last thing I saw was my father's desperate face as he reached for me-

And missed.
