Chapter 1
My Alpha husband used an entire box of condoms to prove he planned to betray me completely tonight.
Through our mate bond, I heard him and the pack healer breathing against each other's lips.
I had only rejected him once, and he treated my refusal as an insult.
When I stood before the elders and demanded a divorce, he locked my ankle to stone and hid me in a windowless room.
He told me a real wife should learn jealousy.
That night, listening to the silver chain scrape against my skin, I swore to make Thornvale Pack pay for his choice.
***
For eighteen months, I gave Thornvale everything I had.
I sat in the east wing office until three in the morning, cross-referencing border ledgers, securing lumber tariffs, and fixing trade routes my husband didn't have the patience to read. Every treaty keeping Thornvale fed through the winter had my signature pressed beneath Alaric’s heavy seal.
In return, Alaric treated our bed like a battlefield he was entitled to conquer.
There was never any warmth to it. He took what he wanted with hard, impatient hands, never caring if I was raw, never waiting until my body was ready. To him, an Alpha’s claim was an administrative fact, not a shared tenderness.
Two nights ago, my fever had spiked to a hundred and two while I finalized the southern grain accord.
When he shoved my door open, smelling of pine smoke and bourbon, he reached straight for the tie of my robe.
"Not tonight, Alaric," I whispered, pulling back against the mahogany desk. "I haven't slept in thirty hours, and I'm sick. Please."
He froze. His gray eyes turned flat, devoid of whatever brief warmth he usually faked.
"You're turning me away?" he asked.
"I need sleep."
"A Luna doesn't lock her Alpha out."
"I am asking for one night," I said, my voice shaking with exhaustion. "Just let me rest."
Alaric didn't shout. He didn't slam the door. He simply stepped back, straightened his cuff links, and looked down at me like I was a broken tool he had no further use for.
"If you won't do your duty, Vera, don't complain about who does."
He walked down the hall to the healer's quarters.
Ten minutes later, the mate bond flared in my chest like a brand.
The bond between mated wolves was designed to share strength, danger, and comfort. It wasn't built to be weaponized. But Alaric threw the door wide open in his mind, shoving every sensation down my throat.
I felt the sudden rush of his pulse. I felt the heat of another woman's skin against his chest. Through the link, the scent of crushed lavender and damp sweat filled my lungs so sharply I gagged.
Then came the sounds.
Sable’s breathless whimpers echoed in the base of my skull. Her nails scraping over his shoulder blades. Her voice, thick and pleading, calling him Alpha while he drove into her.
*Look at what you threw away,* his voice hummed through the bond, cold and gloating.
I dropped to the Persian rug beneath my desk, clutching my stomach. I tried to claw my mental shields shut, but Alaric was the stronger wolf; he battered my defenses down, forcing me to feel every shudder of his release.
He didn't stop once. He kept her awake until dawn, dragging me through every thrust, every moan, every time he whispered her name into her hair.
When the sun finally crept over the windowsill, the bond went quiet.
I pulled myself off the floor, my limbs trembling so violently I had to lean against the wall to walk. I walked down the east corridor toward the healer's wing.
Outside Sable's door lay the proof.
A gold-foil box of condoms, torn open and emptied, tossed carelessly on the runner rug. Beside it lay Alaric's discarded dress shirt, stained with foundation, and his dark silk boxers kicked into the baseboard.
He hadn't hidden it. He had left it in the open like a trophy.
Any lingering piece of hope I had kept alive died on that rug.
Three hours later, the Pack Council convened in the grand hall.
Twelve elders sat around the long cedar table, reviewing the trade quotas I had spent three weeks compiling. Alaric sat at the head, looking rested and polished in his tailored charcoal suit, his Alpha aura steady and commanding.
I walked through the double doors, still wearing my working clothes, my hair pulled back, my eyes hollow.
"Luna Vera," Elder Vance said, nodding politely. "We were just going over the grain transport numbers. Remarkable work, as usual."
"Set the papers down, Vera," Alaric said smoothly, gesturing to the empty chair beside him. "You look pale. Sit."
I stayed standing in the center of the hall, the stone floor cold beneath my boots.
"I'm not here to discuss grain," I said. My voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the room cleanly. "I am formally requesting an immediate severance of our mating bond and a dissolution of our marriage."
The hall fell dead silent.
Elder Vance blinked. "Excuse me?"
"You heard me," I said, looking straight into Alaric's calm face. "I am stepping down as Luna of Thornvale. I want the bond severed before the full moon."
A few elders murmured in alarm. Thornvale's entire northern border relied on my family’s goodwill. Severing our union meant dismantling treaties that kept five hundred families fed.
Alaric didn't flinch. He didn't even look angry. He placed his pen down with quiet precision and smiled faintly at the table.
"Forgive my wife," Alaric said, his tone dripping with practiced patience. "She has been working eighty-hour weeks without a break. The southern trade negotiations have put an unbearable strain on her nerves."
"Alaric," I warned, my jaw tightening.
"She collapsed in her office this morning," he continued, turning to the elders with an expression of deep, tragic concern. "She's feverish and experiencing paranoid delusions. We spoke before the meeting; she believes I'm stepping outside our bond."
"You left your clothes outside Sable's door!" I snapped, stepping toward the table. "You left the empty box on the floor for every guard to see!"
The elders exchanged uneasy glances.
"Sable was treating me for a training injury late last night," Alaric lied smoothly, without a single hitch in his voice. "Vera saw the laundry basket and created a fantasy. You see how unstable she is. If she speaks to the northern emissaries in this condition, she could destroy our entire alliance."
"I am perfectly sane," I said, my chest burning. "Elders, call Sable in here right now. Check her scent. Check his."
"Enough," Alaric said.
He stood up. His presence expanded instantly, filling the high-ceilinged room with the suffocating weight of an Alpha’s command. Several junior elders lowered their heads on reflex.
"My Luna needs medical isolation," Alaric declared. "Until her fever breaks and her mind clears, she is relieved of all administrative duties for her own protection."
Before I could reach for the dagger hidden in my boot, two enforcers stepped up behind me, catching my arms in a brutal grip.
"Don't touch me!" I fought, throwing my weight sideways, but my body was still weak from the fever and the sleepless night. "Alaric! You can't do this!"
He walked around the table, his expression completely blank, and touched my cheek with cold fingers.
"Rest, sweetheart," he murmured. "I'll handle the pack from here."
They dragged me down into the manor's foundation, past the wine cellars and the armory, to a section of the basement I didn't know existed.
The iron door groaned when they shoved me inside.
I hit the rough stone floor, scraping my palms. By the time I scrambled back to my feet, they had already stripped away my wool coat, my watch, my phone, and the folder containing my personal seal. I was left in a thin white shift.
"Wait!" I lunged for the threshold, but an enforcer shoved me back with his forearm.
Alaric stepped into the doorway, holding a ring of black keys and a thick cuff made of pure, dull silver.
He grabbed my right ankle before I could kick. The silver snapped shut around my bone with a sharp, sickening click.
The burn was immediate. Silver didn't kill werewolves, but against bare skin, it scorched like heated wire, suppressing my inner wolf until my limbs felt heavy as lead. The other end of the chain was bolted directly into the foundation bedrock.
The thick granite walls blocked every outside scent. There was no window. No draft. Only the damp chill of wet rock.
Yet the mate bond still pulsed faintly in my chest, a thin, toxic thread linking me to the man standing in the light of the corridor.
Alaric looked down at me, dusting off the knees of his trousers.
"You brought this on yourself, Vera," he said calmly.
"You're a coward," I spat, my voice echoing off the stone. "You hide behind your council because you know what you did."
"I did what any Alpha does when his mate forgets who leads," he said, stepping backward into the hallway. "You wanted to withhold yourself. You wanted to act proud. Now you can sit down here and think about what a real Luna owes her husband."
He took hold of the heavy iron door handle.
"When you learn how to feel jealous instead of arrogant," Alaric added, his voice dropping low, "and when you learn how to take care of me the way Sable does, I'll consider letting you back upstairs."
The iron door slammed shut, and the heavy bolt turned in the lock.
Sitting in the absolute dark, listening to the silver sizzle against my skin, the last shred of grief inside me hardened into stone.
He hadn't locked me up to save his marriage.
He had locked me up to break me.
Chapter 2
For four days, the only way I measured time was by the sound of Alaric’s key grinding in the lock.
He came down to the cellar every evening, never carrying food, only the lingering scent of crushed lavender and sex. He would sit on the wooden crate across from my cot, adjusting his cuffs, watching my face for any crack in my composure.
"Sable waited on me after training today," he said, his voice smooth and conversational. "She ran the bath, washed my back, and didn't utter a single complaint about pack business. She knows how to soothe a man. She doesn't withhold herself."
I sat with my back pressed against the cold stone, pulling my knees toward my chest. The silver cuff around my right ankle had already eaten through the top layer of skin, leaving an oozing circle of raw, blackening flesh.
"Did you hear me, Vera?" he asked, leaning forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "She stayed in my bed until noon. Every time I touched her, she begged for more."
He was waiting for a scream. He was waiting for tears, for jealous accusations, for anything that proved he still held power over my feelings.
I looked straight at him through the dim light of the single bulb overhead. My voice was dry, scraping against my throat like gravel.
"You're wasting your breath, Alaric."
His jaw tightened. "Am I?"
"You keep coming down here because you want me to break," I said, holding his gaze without blinking. "You want me to hurt only because you can't accept that I don't love you anymore."
The air in the room went completely still.
The smug, superior mask cracked off his face. His gray eyes turned black with sudden fury, his chest heaving as the words hit him like a physical blow.
"What did you say?" he growled.
"You heard me," I said quietly. "You're nothing to me."
Alaric lunged across the small space.
He seized the chain linked to my ankle, yanking it so hard my head slammed against the stone wall. Pain burst behind my eyes, but before I could kick out with my free leg, he pinned my knees down with the full weight of his body. He unlocked the floor anchor and dragged the chain upward, locking my leg high against the iron frame of the cot.
"I am your Alpha," he hissed into my face, his breath hot against my cheek. "You don't get to decide when you stop loving me."
He grabbed the collar of my thin white shift and ripped it straight down the middle.
Cold air struck my exposed skin. I twisted away, but the silver chain held my right leg against the cot. He ignored every plea and forced himself on me while I fought to stay inside my own mind.
"Alaric, stop!" I begged, clawing at his shoulders. "Please, stop!"
He held my wrists above my head and kept going. When I turned my face toward the wall, he forced the mate bond open, flooding my mind with his satisfaction and his demand for submission.
"Feel it, Vera," he panted. "Feel who owns you. You're mine. You will always be mine."
I stopped looking at him. I counted the cracks in the stone, one after another, while he used my body to punish me. The bond carried every second of his cruelty into my skull.
When he finally pulled away, I curled onto my side as much as the ankle chain allowed, shivering violently on the bare cot, staring at the floor.
Alaric zipped his trousers and smoothed down his shirt, entirely unbothered. He didn't even look out of breath. He stepped toward the heavy door, banged on the iron panel twice, and called out, "Corin. Get in here."
The door swung open, and Doctor Corin Hale stepped into the cellar, carrying a leather medical kit.
Corin froze at the threshold. His eyes immediately fell on my naked, trembling body, the visible bruises blooming on my hips, and the white fluid drying on my skin.
Shame burned through me, hotter than the silver. I tried to pull my knees together, but the chain held my right leg splayed wide, leaving me completely exposed to another man's sight.
"Alaric... make him leave," I whispered, my voice cracking.
Alaric didn't move. He leaned his shoulder against the iron doorframe, crossing his arms over his chest. A faint, sickening smirk touched the corner of his mouth.
"Check her, Corin," Alaric commanded, treating the physician's silence like a personal trophy. "Make sure Thornvale's Luna is healthy enough to endure her quarantine."
Corin’s jaw tightened, but he lowered his eyes respectfully, avoiding staring at my body. He opened his kit, pulled out a sterile linen sheet, and gently draped it over my torso and hips before touching me.
"Forgive me, Luna," Corin murmured under his breath, his voice barely audible.
Alaric watched from the doorway like a hawk, daring either of us to step out of line.
Corin crouched beside the cot to examine my chained leg. His fingers were careful as he touched the swollen, blackened flesh where the silver dug into the bone. The metal had fused with dried blood and pus, causing an angry red ring of infection to creep up my calf.
He checked my pulse at my throat, noting the sunken skin beneath my eyes and the deep cracks on my parched lips.
"Severe dehydration," Corin said aloud, keeping his tone flat and professional. "Heart rate is elevated. The tissue around the right malleolus shows acute necrosis from silver exposure. She needs fluids and topical salve immediately."
"She will receive what I allow her to receive," Alaric said from the door, his tone dismissive.
Corin didn't argue. He kept his head bowed, opening his leather-bound chart on his knee. But as he uncapped his fountain pen, his hand was firm. Beneath the routine notes, I saw the dark ink pressing hard into the official pack record: *Physical trauma consistent with non-consensual force. Unlawful confinement. Silver poisoning.*
He closed the ledger, snapped his bag shut, and stood up without meeting Alaric's eyes.
"I have done what I can for now, Alpha," Corin said.
"Good. Get out."
Alaric followed the doctor out into the hall. The iron door slammed shut once more, and the heavy bolt slid home, plunging me back into the freezing dark.
I lay on the rusted springs, clutching the thin linen sheet Corin had left behind.
Inside my chest, I reached out for the presence that had lived beside me since my sixteenth year.
*Luna,* I called out in the dark of my mind. *Wake up. Please, help me.*
Nothing answered.
Where there used to be a warm, fierce heartbeat and golden eyes ready to tear throats, there was only a hollow, cavernous silence. The silver, the starvation, and the absolute humiliation had forced my wolf into a deep, unresponsive dormancy.
A cold dread spread through my veins.
For the first time since Alaric locked me in the dark, true fear gripped me. I wasn't afraid of his cruelty, or the pain, or the cold stone.
I was terrified that if my wolf stayed asleep, I would forget how to fight back.
Then, through the narrow ventilation slit above the heavy door, the sound of muffled footsteps broke the quiet.
Two guards were standing in the outer corridor, right on the other side of the stone.
"Are you sure there's nobody down in the sub-level?" one of them asked.
I recognized the second voice instantly. It was Jonah, one of Alaric's personal sentries.
"Positive," Jonah muttered, his voice muffled by the thick iron. "The Alpha said she's already been sent back to Moonridge."
Chapter 3
The lock rattled less than an hour later.
Alaric stepped inside, carrying a porcelain bowl of beef broth and warm bread. He wore a clean charcoal sweater, looking like the devoted mate he always pretended to be in front of the council.
"I brought you dinner," he said softly, kneeling beside my cot. "You're stubborn, Vera, but I don't want you starving down here. Say thank you, and let me feed you."
He blew on a spoonful of broth, offering it to my cracked lips. His bare fingers reached out to cup my chin.
I parted my lips, lunged forward, and sank my teeth straight into his index finger.
I clamped down with every ounce of strength left in my jaw, grinding until bone grated against bone.
Alaric roared, dropping the bowl to the floor. His heavy palm struck the side of my face with a brutal crack.
My head slammed hard against the stone wall. White light exploded behind my eyelids, and the taste of copper filled my mouth.
"Ungrateful bitch," he snarled, clutching his mangled, bleeding finger against his chest.
He kicked the shattered porcelain across the floor, sending warm broth and chunks of meat pooling in the filth.
"Eat it off the stones," Alaric ordered, towering over me with cold fury in his eyes. "Lick it up like the dog you are, or starve."
He spun on his heel and slammed the iron door shut behind him.
My stomach cramped violently from hunger. Every bruised muscle in my body begged for nourishment, but I dragged my chained leg back, took aim, and kicked the remaining crusts of bread straight into the darkest corner of the cell.
I would rather rot than beg from his hand.
Ten minutes later, the latch clicked open again.
A figure slipped through the narrow opening, easing the heavy iron shut behind him.
It wasn't Alaric.
"Jonah," I croaked, my throat raw. "Jonah, help me! Unlock this chain right now!"
Jonah froze, his hand lingering on the brass door handle. He blinked against the dim light, his eyes landing on the cot.
"Luna?" His voice wavered. "What the hell... the Alpha told the outer guard you were escorted back to Moonridge two days ago."
"He lied," I rasped, pointing toward the silver cuff embedded in my swollen ankle. "Look at me! He locked me down here. Get the key and get me out before he comes back."
Jonah didn't reach for his belt.
Instead, his gaze dropped from my bruised face down to my bare shoulders, the shredded shift on the floor, and the thin linen sheet barely covering my thighs. His eyes lingered on the curve of my waist.
The shock on his face faded, replaced by something dark and calculating.
"Get you out?" Jonah asked quietly, stepping closer to the cot. "And risk Alaric ripping my throat out? That's a death sentence, Vera."
"You think he'll spare you if you walk away?" I forced my voice steady, fighting back the rising nausea in my chest. "You know his secret now. You've seen this room. The second he realizes you were down here, he'll put your head on a spike to cover his tracks. Beta loyalty means nothing to an Alpha like him."
Jonah hesitated, his jaw working as my words registered. But his eyes never left my bare skin.
"Maybe," Jonah said, his thumbs hooking into the waistband of his tactical trousers. "Or maybe I take my payment upfront. You want my help? Give me something worth the risk."
A chill ran straight down my spine. "What?"
"You heard me," he said, stepping between my parted knees. "You're offering promises. I want an Alpha's woman. Let me fuck you, and I'll unlock that chain."
Rage and disgust flared in my chest, but inside my ribs, my wolf remained completely silent. The silver had silenced her. I had no strength, no allies, and no second chance.
If I refused, Jonah would walk out, lock the door, and let Alaric torture me until I broke.
*Survive,* I told myself, feeling the cold calculation settle in my mind. *Swallow the shame and survive.*
"Fine," I said, my voice empty. "Do it. But you unlock the cuff the second you finish. And I keep my mouth shut about what you did."
Jonah let out a rough laugh. "Deal."
He shoved the linen sheet aside, exposing me to the freezing subterranean air.
"You want payment?" he asked.
I stared at the cracks in the ceiling and held on to the only thought that mattered: survive. Jonah took what he had demanded while I lay chained to the cot, unable to give meaningful consent. I left my body behind and counted the seconds until it was over.
When he pulled away, I kept my face turned toward the wall and waited for the shaking to stop.
"The key," I said immediately, my voice devoid of emotion."The key," I said immediately, my voice devoid of emotion.
Jonah took a ragged breath, zipping his trousers. The lust had cleared from his face, leaving behind a sudden, nervous panic. He knew what he had just done.
He reached into his pocket, pulled out the heavy silver key, and unlocked the cuff around my ankle.
The burning stopped instantly. Blood trickled down my raw heel as the metal clattered against the stone floor.
"Here," Jonah muttered, stripping off his heavy dark utility jacket and throwing it at me. "Put that on and stay behind me until the perimeter gate."
I pulled the thick coat over my naked body, zipping it up to my throat.
While Jonah turned toward the door to check the corridor, my fingers moved across the metal supply table beside the cot.
I swiped his electronic security keycard, snatched the folded night guard roster, and grabbed Doctor Corin's medical file, shoving all three into the deep inner pocket of the jacket.
We slipped into the damp basement hallway.
Jonah led me through the shadows, bypassing two dormant security checkpoints before pushing open a low iron hatch that opened onto the perimeter tree line.
"Run," Jonah whispered, his face pale under the moonlight. "Don't ever come back."
I didn't answer.
I bolted into the darkness, my bare feet tearing against frozen mud and sharp gravel. Agony radiated up my infected ankle with every stride, but pure survival pushed me forward.
I broke through the thick underbrush, hit the empty asphalt of the forest highway, and sprinted north toward Moonridge Pack territory.
Ten minutes into the run, a searing pain tore through the center of my chest.
The mate bond flared like burning gasoline.
Alaric knew.
A deafening siren wailed across the valley from Thornvale Manor, shattering the silence of the night.
Then, Alaric's Alpha command blasted through the pack mindlink, vibrating violently against the walls of my skull.
*To all Thornvale warriors,* his voice roared, shaking with venomous rage. *Luna Vera has betrayed this pack! She seduced a sentry, stole classified documents, and fled into the woods! She is an escaped fugitive. Hunt her down and bring her back in chains!*
