Chapter 1
My wife's first love crashes his car into me at 75 miles per hour, throwing my body over 65 feet across the road. As I am moments away from drawing my last breath, I use the remainder of my energy to call my wife. Focused on helping him cover up his crimes, she brushes me off before hanging up.
"I'm busy—stop bothering me," she spits.
Little does she know, the man who was just killed… is me.
I had died.
I lay alone on the empty street as my blood stained the ground beneath me. After I drew my last breath, my spirit drifted to my wife and watched as she embraced her first love with a frantic expression.
"Calm down, Gabriel. Don't worry. I'll help you and make sure that you stay out of prison," said my wife, Sarah Lloyd.
Her first love, Gabriel Scott, was curled up in her arms.
With a horrified look on his face, he said in a trembling voice, "You're the only person who can help me, Sarah. I only had a few drinks. I didn't mean to hit him. You're a lawyer—you know how to get me out of this, right?"
She stared at him in a sympathetic manner while she repeatedly promised that nothing would happen to him. Subsequently, she pulled out her phone to call me. But before she could place the call, he agitatedly snatched the device away from her.
"What are you doing, Gabriel?" she asked quizzically. "I was going to call Alex so he could come over and get rid of your car for us. Leaving the car with you will raise suspicions."
Gabriel averted his gaze. "Let's not tell Alex, Sarah. What if he calls the police?"
Sarah's expression instantly turned cold.
She clicked her tongue in disdain and said, "He wouldn't dare. He literally just called me minutes ago. He must've wanted to ask me to hurry home. If I tell him I'll return after he moves the car, he'll definitely show up."
Then, she added in a condescending manner, "He hasn't acted like a real man in years. He does whatever I tell him to do. You have no idea how weak and cowardly he is, Gabriel. He's worse than a sniveling mutt."
Gabriel was Sarah's first love. However, her family didn't approve of their relationship. She'd planned to run away to another country with him, but she couldn't get in touch with him during the most crucial moment.
She ended up marrying me out of spite, but she didn't love me. She felt that I was unworthy, weak, and nothing like a real man. So, she'd always looked at me with contempt. In her eyes, I should be grateful that I was able to marry her in the first place.
In truth, I only obeyed all of her wishes because I wanted to do right by her and make amends. I didn't think she'd think so lowly of me because of how I'd been acting.
Gabriel had only returned a month ago, yet Sarah's entire world was already revolving around him. Even as a spirit, I could still feel my heart ache. She was solely focused on asking me to help him destroy evidence; it had never occurred to her that doing so might make me look like a suspect too.
Still, her decision no longer had anything to do with me. I was dead. I was killed by Gabriel, her childhood friend, in a hit-and-run incident. I was afraid she hadn't realized that the blood on his car actually belonged to me.
Chapter 2
As I followed Sarah around, I watched as she personally cleaned the blood off Gabriel's car before destroying the dashcam footage.
I couldn't help but smile bitterly. I'd never let Sarah lift a single finger in our home. In fact, I treated her like royalty and even hand-washed her laundry myself. Because of this, watching her do so much for Gabriel made me feel like an utter fool.
After she destroyed the evidence, she even taught Gabriel how to give false testimony. She guaranteed that she'd be able to get him off the hook even if he were to become the prime suspect in the case.
I desperately wanted to tell the police that Gabriel was the perpetrator. But I could only watch helplessly as the woman I loved helped my murderer cover his tracks.
Once everything was cleaned up, Sarah patted Gabriel's hand reassuringly. "Everything's settled. If the police ever come knocking on your door, you just need to tell them exactly what I told you to say. I promise you'll be okay."
Gabriel stared at her face with a loving expression before reaching out to caress her cheek.
"I don't know what I'd do without you, Sarah," he said.
Blushing profusely, she replied in an affectionate manner, "I'd do anything for you, Gabriel."
"How do I compare to your husband then?" he asked as he gauged her reaction.
Her face contorted in disdain. "He's nothing compared to you. You're the most important person in my life."
She continued, "He called me earlier, but he didn't say a word after I answered the call. I have no clue what he was trying to do. He's not assertive and stammers whenever he talks. I couldn't be bothered to wait, so I just hung up on him."
Despite knowing that Sarah didn't love me, her comments still made me feel incredibly heartbroken. We'd been married for years, yet she didn't seem to care about me at all. On the other hand, Gabriel had only been back for a month, and she'd already forgotten about how he'd abandoned her in the past. He'd managed to win her over without even trying.
Gabriel's lips curved up into a small smirk. After receiving a satisfactory answer, his mood seemed to have improved.
He casually plucked a flower out of the vase beside him and presented it to her. "I still remember your birthday, although we'd been apart all these years. This is for you, Sarah. In my opinion, you're more beautiful than this flower."
His phony demeanor made me feel sick. If he'd actually remembered Sarah's birthday, he wouldn't have just given her a flower from a vase. But to my dismay, Sarah actually believed in his lies.
Cupping a hand over her mouth, she cried, "I didn't even realize that it was my birthday today. I can't believe you still remember."
As a well-known lawyer, Sarah had countless cases to deal with every single day. As a result, she was so busy that she could hardly keep track of time.
Every year on her birthday, I'd pick out her gift in advance before getting her flowers and a cake to celebrate the occasion. Yet, every time she came home and saw what I'd prepared, she'd dismiss my efforts and claim that I had too much free time on my hands. Then, she'd return to her room.
Despite feeling incredibly disappointed, I was convinced that I'd be able to win her over eventually. I never imagined that a wildflower from Gabriel could move her to tears when none of my painstaking efforts managed to do so.
All of a sudden, Sarah's expression stiffened, and she seemed to have remembered something. Subsequently, she took out her phone and checked our chat.
The messages she'd received were the last texts I sent her before I died. One of the texts was a photo of the cake and the bouquet I bought for her birthday. I'd gotten her a bouquet of her favorite flowers—peonies. On top of that, I'd even gotten her the cake she said she wanted to try.
"I prepared a surprise for you, Sarah," my last text to her read.
As I stared at the phone screen, I gradually began to recall what had happened right before I died.
After texting Sarah, I was just about to head home with the cake and the bouquet when a car came speeding in my direction. The next thing I knew, my body was hurled into the air before it crashed back onto the ground. By the time I regained consciousness, I was covered in my own blood and unable to move.
I used up what was left of my energy to call Sarah. I tried to tell her what happened, but I couldn't make a single sound.
"I'm busy—stop bothering me," her emotionless voice spat from the other end of the line.
The last of my life slipped away as my phone screen slowly faded to black. By the time I woke up again, I'd already become a spirit that was following her around.
Chapter 3
Sarah looked conflicted as she checked our chat.
Gabriel took her phone from her and placed it on the table. "We haven't seen each other in years, Sarah. Since it's your birthday today, would you like to spend the night with me instead?"
"But… Alex and I are already married," she replied hesitantly.
He grabbed her shoulders and exclaimed, "But you don't love him! Aren't you in love with me? Have you perhaps fallen in love with Alex while I was gone?"
I knew that she didn't love me, but I still allowed myself to hope. Maybe she hesitated because she actually cared about me after all.
Unfortunately, her response left me thoroughly disappointed.
"Of course not!" she replied without a shred of hesitation. "I'm just afraid that it'd harm your reputation if someone were to find out about it."
She added, "Alex could never compare to you. In my eyes, he doesn't even hold a candle to you!"
As it turned out, she was only concerned that Gabriel would be labeled as a homewrecker—she didn't care about my feelings at all.
"I'm not worried about that, Sarah. I just want to be with you," declared Gabriel.
Subsequently, he wrapped his hand around the back of her neck and feverishly pulled her in for a kiss. His free hand then began to wander up her thigh. As the atmosphere in the room grew more and more intimate, the pair proceeded to make their way toward the bedroom.
I was heartbroken and devastated. Sarah's derisive comments, combined with the noises I was now hearing behind me, left me so overwhelmed that I was struggling to breathe.
I tried to flee the room, but I was bound to Sarah's side. I couldn't leave, no matter how hard I tried, so I was forced to listen to what was happening in the background for the rest of the night. Eventually, I became numb to everything that was going on.
The following morning, Sarah reluctantly left Gabriel's home and headed to work.
When she stepped out of the house, she checked her phone and realized that I hadn't called or texted her since last night. Furious, she spat, "You're not even concerned that I was out the entire night? Serves you right that I slept with someone else!"
I was dead; I wasn't going to bother her ever again. Wasn't this what she'd wanted all along?
Once she got to the law firm, I noticed my mom leaning against the entrance of the office building.
My heart ached. I hastily rushed over to my mom and tried to help her up. But to my dismay, my hands went right through her shoulders.
Sarah, on the other hand, frowned at the sight of her.
"Hey, what are you doing here?" she asked in disdain.
Once my mom heard Sarah's voice, she shakily got to her feet.
Using her cane to guide her, she then made her way over to Sarah and said, "Yesterday, I couldn't shake the feeling that something bad was about to happen. Alex isn't picking up my calls, and no one answered the door when I dropped by your place. That's why I decided to wait for you at your workplace."
My eyes immediately welled up with tears. Was this what they called a mother's intuition? I couldn't believe my mom knew that something had gone awry.
"What?" Sarah shrieked. "Alex didn't go home last night? I can't believe he's cheating on me!"
Upon hearing Sarah's accusations, my mom immediately began to panic. She anxiously clutched Sarah's hand and explained, "Alex isn't that kind of guy, Sarah. I know him very well. I just assumed that no one was home because you went out together. Were you not with him last night?"
A flicker of guilt flashed across Sarah's face. Subsequently, she aggressively yanked her hand away from my mom and replied, "I was working last night. How am I supposed to know where your beloved son went? I bet he's fooling around with other women behind my back!"
After losing her balance, my blind mother accidentally tripped and fell down.
I was seething. I wanted to dash forward and slap Sarah across the face. She was the one who cheated on me last night, but she was trying to paint me as the guilty one instead. On top of that, she even pushed my mom and made her fall to the ground.
