Chapter 1 of The Divorce Papers Were Just the Beginning

My husband was supposed to be getting married.

Not in some distant place. Not hidden away like a secret. It was happening right inside our home—our house—while both families sat in the front row, smiling as if it were some divine blessing instead of a betrayal.

That was the first sight that hit me the moment I ripped myself free from my captor and made it back barefoot, bloodied, barely breathing.

And there he was.

Among the guests.

Westley George.

The man who had kept me chained to a slab of cold concrete. The man who made my ribs crack when my screams got too loud. The man who stole a year of my life and made sure pain became something I learned to recognize like a name.

He sat there so casually, champagne in hand, laughing with my in-laws as though he had always belonged in our world.

But my mind flashed back to another image—him crouched in front of me in that dark room, the iron chain burning into my skin as he turned the key between his fingers like it was nothing.

“You still call out for him,” he said once, voice almost gentle. “Your husband isn’t coming. He gave you up himself. Handed you over like you were nothing more than payment.”

I coughed out blood and shook my head hard. “That’s not true…”

He only chuckled. “He chose your sister. He always did. You were just the placeholder. Something temporary.”

I refused to believe it. I clung to every memory I had of Victor—his hands steady at my waist, his lips brushing my forehead before sleep, the vows he once whispered like they meant forever. I held onto those moments like they were the only truth I had left.

Westley just smiled wider, like he enjoyed watching me break slowly. “Keep holding on,” he murmured. “It will hurt more when it finally snaps.”

And then everything blurred.

A year ago, they told me my husband had been taken.

Victor Langford. East Coast mafia king. Untouchable. Feared.

They said it was for our son. For the family. For the empire he built. I didn’t even hesitate—I stepped forward and said take me instead. I thought I was protecting him. I thought that was what love meant.

Instead, I became the thing they hid. The thing they broke. The thing they used.

And my son—

My little boy.

Caleb Langford was moving through the crowd with a tray that looked too heavy for his small arms. He bowed at every step, voice soft, rehearsed, almost lifeless.

“Please enjoy, sir.”

“Thank you, ma’am.”

“I’m sorry… I’ll go faster.”

He looked like he was terrified of even existing too loudly, as if fear had been drilled into him until it became habit.

The moment I stepped inside, the music died mid-note. Heads turned all at once.

Victor was at the altar, ring still in his hand.

For a split second, his eyes widened.

Then they hardened.

“This is a wedding,” he said sharply, like I was an interruption he didn’t authorize. “Whatever lie you’ve come here to tell can wait until tomorrow. Look at yourself—bloody, filthy, disgusting. Leave. Don’t ruin this.”

I stared at him.

I wanted him to ask where I had been. I wanted him to notice I was shaking. I wanted him to ask who did this to me.

But he didn’t.

He looked at me like I was something unwanted dragged through his perfect day.

My gaze drifted past him.

To the woman in white.

Delilah.

My sister.

The girl I raised with my own hands. The girl who used to cry into my shoulder and call me her safe place. The girl who once said I was the only family she had.

She couldn’t even look at me.

And Westley… he laughed softly from his seat, like he was watching a show he already knew the ending to.

Then my mother’s voice cut through the room like a blade.

“How dare you show your face here!” she screamed. “After disappearing for a year, you come back like this? You think you can ruin your sister’s wedding? Victor treated you like a queen, and this is how you repay him? With shame? With disgrace?”

Cheated?

Me?

I almost laughed at how easily they rewrote my life. My throat burned too much to even do it properly.

So this was what I had become in their story.

A lie. A scandal. A mistake.

Then suddenly, an arm slid around my shoulder.

I froze.

Westley.

He leaned in close, grip tightening just enough to remind me I wasn’t free. His voice stayed calm, almost affectionate.

“Still acting like you don’t know me?” he murmured. “You really haven’t changed. I taught you better than this, baby. Do you want me to remind everyone how obedient you used to be?”

My knees almost gave out.

Not because I wanted to.

Because my body remembered before my mind could stop it.

The room erupted into whispers.

“So that’s the man she ran off with…”

“No wonder Mr. Langford remarried.”

“She really fell that low?”

“Look at her family… even her son is serving drinks.”

Then Victor stepped closer, irritation sharp in his voice like I was an inconvenience ruining his schedule.

“Did you really have to come today?” he hissed. “I spent a year preparing this. I wanted Delilah’s wedding to be perfect. Things were finally peaceful. And now you show up like this—are you doing this on purpose?”

Peaceful.

As if my disappearance was peace.

As if my suffering was background noise.

As if a year of blood and silence was nothing but inconvenience.

Something inside me finally gave way.

I moved toward my son.

“Caleb,” I whispered, voice breaking. “Baby… come here. We’re going home.”

He looked at me like he didn’t recognize me at first.

Then he dropped.

Hard.

Knees hitting the floor as the tray crashed beside him.

“No!” he cried, shaking violently. “I can’t leave! Please don’t take me! I’ll stay—I’ll serve them better! I’ll be good! I promise! I won’t make mistakes anymore!”

He pressed his forehead to the ground like begging itself had become his only language.

And I felt something inside my chest tear completely open.

My husband watched.

My sister looked away.

And the man who ruined my life smiled like he had never lost control of anything at all.
