Chapter 1 of The Discarded Mate

Arwen’s POV

For five endless years, I wore a ring the Moon refused to acknowledge. There was no Blood Moon chase beneath an open sky, no sacred joining witnessed by the Elders, no vows howled beneath the ancient oak where our ancestors once carved loyalty into soil and bone. There were no spirits called, no ancestors invoked, no blessing etched into my soul.

Instead, there was only a lifeless document—thin parchment stamped with ink and authority—that my so-called mate, Alpha Lucien of the Darkmoor Pack, had thrust into my hands as if it were more than enough.

He told me the rituals would come later. He swore that once the borders were secure, once rival packs were crushed and wars no longer threatened us, he would finally take me before the Moon and bind me properly. I believed him. I waited.

Five winters passed. The Moon remained silent. And I remained unclaimed.

Last week, I gathered the courage to ask again.

I remember my hands trembling as I folded his worn battle leathers, still scented with steel, sweat, and command. I remember how I had to steady my breathing, how hope beat painfully in my chest as I spoke, afraid that even my voice might give me away. He was seated at his desk, eyes skimming over trade ledgers and alliance agreements, already half gone from the room.

“Alpha Lucien,” I began softly, “do you think… maybe this year we could finally perform the mating rites? It’s our fifth year. Perhaps the Moon will accept us now.”

He didn’t look at me. Not even once.

“Why would we?” he replied flatly. “You already carry my bite. Ceremonies are for wolves who need reassurance. We’re beyond that.”

My fingers tightened around the leather in my hands. “But you told me you would,” I said, my voice barely holding together. “You said that when the fighting was over, when the wars settled—”

He snapped then, irritation sharp in his tone, his wolf pressing close to the surface. “Enough, Arwen. You’re acting like a child. Let it go. The pack’s resources are stretched thin. I’m not wasting them on meaningless tradition.”

As always, I swallowed the ache. I buried the humiliation. I folded myself smaller and stayed quiet.

But not this time.

That day marked five years since I had stood beside him, believing I was chosen, believing my place at his side meant something. He claimed he was too busy to acknowledge the date—too many patrols, too many duties as Alpha—but I convinced myself that didn’t mean I couldn’t still honor it.

I woke before dawn. I went into the market alone. I planned his favorite meal, choosing each ingredient with care, as if love itself could be measured and proven through effort.

I even bought white moon-lilies.

Once, long ago, he had told me they reminded him of purity beneath starlight. I held them close as I walked, warmth blooming foolishly in my chest at the thought of surprising him.

But the Moon had other intentions for me.

I had almost reached home when something deep inside me faltered. Just past the stone steps of the Pack Hall, my wolf stirred, uneasy and insistent. Instinct forced my feet to stop. A warning rippled through my bones.

I turned.

And everything shattered.

Lucien stood there.

And beside him was Evelyn.

My sister—lost five years ago, presumed dead to the wilds—walked at his side with her arm looped familiarly through his. They were laughing softly, close enough that their shoulders brushed, as if the years apart had never existed. As if she had always belonged there.

In Evelyn’s hands was a document, the ink still dark and fresh, catching the sunlight.

A bond certificate.

The scent of betrayal slammed into me, sharper than claws.

Evelyn tilted her head, feigning concern as she spoke. “Are you sure this was permitted?” she asked lightly. “What about Arwen? You are still tied to her, are you not? She’s still recognized as your Luna.”

Lucien’s response was calm. Detached. Cruel.

“That tie was never real,” he said. “I never presented her to the Moon. Never called the Ancestors to witness it. She was a placeholder—nothing more. A shadow standing in for you. Now that you’ve returned, she’ll be dealt with. Completely.”

Evelyn inhaled sharply, as if testing his resolve. “Even after I fled on our wedding day?” she whispered. “After I left you behind… you still feel this way?”

He reached for her then, cradling her face with a tenderness he had never truly given me. “I never stopped,” he said. “You are my true mate. Arwen was convenient. She shared your blood, your features, your scent. She filled the space until you came back.”

My legs nearly gave out.

I couldn’t draw air into my lungs. My wolf howled inside my chest, slamming against my ribs in agony.

Then two more scents reached me—familiar, once comforting.

Silas and Bastian.

My brothers emerged from the Pack Hall, faces split with grins as if this were cause for celebration.

“It’s done already?” Silas asked, clapping Lucien on the shoulder. “Good. That means we can finally move forward.”

Bastian chuckled. “What about Arwen?” he said mockingly. “She’ll make a scene when she finds out. Maybe we ship her off to the human territories. Or let the rogues finish the job.”

Silas scoffed. “She was never strong enough for this pack anyway. Best to erase her sooner rather than later.”

Their laughter rang out together—four voices bound by betrayal.

The same brothers who once swore to protect me.

The sister I mourned.

The mate I sacrificed my dignity for.

They stood united, sharpening their intentions against my existence.

The weight of it crushed me—shame, heartbreak, fury all crashing at once. I couldn’t endure it. I turned and ran.

My wolf tried to rise, but my body was exhausted, weakened by years of being nothing more than an Alpha’s shadow. Tears blinded me, breath tearing painfully from my chest as the ground lurched beneath my feet.

Then came the shriek of metal.

The thunder of hooves.

A violent, blinding impact.

Pain exploded through me.

And the world went dark.

But in that darkness, as blood soaked the earth and consciousness slipped away, the Moon stirred within my bones—ancient, unforgiving, alive.

From blood and betrayal, you are remade.

You are not meant to be hunted.

You are the storm.
