Chapter 1

After my son, Ethan Jennings, finished the university entrance examination, my husband left us on the overpass.

A large truck malfunctioned, resulting in a severe car accident.

Ethan was impaled by a piece of rebar and was rushed to the ICU for emergency treatment.

The doctors stated that for this complex and challenging surgery, only Zachary Jennings, a surgical specialist, could operate, giving the patient a slim chance of survival.

And Zachary was my husband.

I called him, but all I heard was his first crush's voice.

"Zach is taking a shower. Call him back later."

I couldn't care less and shouted anxiously, "Get him on the phone quickly! Our son was in a car accident and is in the intensive care unit. He is the only one who can save him. Get him back to the hospital now!"

His crush chuckled, "Zach, your wife seems to be jealous."

Zachary's voice came, sounding impatient. "How could you kid about our son's life just because of jealousy? Are you not tired of this?"

He hung up the phone, cutting off our son's only chance of survival.

——

"The patient's condition is extremely critical. The rebar has punctured the heart, making it highly prone to rupture!

If the rebar is not removed within two hours, it could lead to severe bleeding and cardiac tamponade. At that point, even a miracle would be hard-pressed to save them!"

Two hours?!

My legs went weak, and I had to hold on to the wall tightly to prevent myself from falling to the ground.

I was shaking all over. "Doctor, please... Please save my son!"

The doctor sighed helplessly, "Only Dr. Zachary Jennings, an expert in this field, can perform this high-difficulty surgery. However, we are unable to reach him at the moment."

Zachary Jennings?

He was the biological father of my son, my husband!

I held the doctor's hand and said, "Doctor, please do your best to stabilize my son's condition. I will contact Zachary to perform the surgery!"

I slid down to the ground, leaning against the corner of the wall. My heart was filled with anxiety as I dialed Zachary's number with trembling hands again and again.

Unfortunately, no one answered the call, and my number was even blocked in the end.

I opened WhatsApp again, made a voice call and a video call, and even sent messages.

I was so anxious that I burst into tears.

"Zachary, please, I beg you. Answer the phone...

Come and save our son..." I couldn't help but murmur as I kept trying to reach him.

After finally getting through, I heard the voice of Zachary's first crush, Riley Smith, on the phone.

Feeling a sudden shock, I opened her Instagram.

"Aiden only had a minor scratch, but he was so nervous. He is truly our guardian angel."

In her Instagram story, Zachary was squatting in front of Riley's son, Aiden, and gently applying ointment to him.

The background was in Riley's home.

I didn't care about anything else, urgently rushing out of the hospital and taking a taxi to Riley's house.

The person who opened the door was Riley, who was wearing a sexy suspender.

Zachary was naked from the waist up, with a bath towel wrapped around his lower body, and he held a towel in his hand, wiping his hair.

The moment our eyes met, he froze. His expression instantly turned cold, and he frowned.

"Hannah, who gave you permission to come here? Seriously? Why are you doing this?

I've already told you that Riley and I are not what you think. I can't believe you actually followed me here. You're truly annoying."

His face was filled with disgust as if I had committed a grave offense.

Yet, he didn't seem to think there was anything wrong with his actions. As a married man, being in another woman's home in the middle of the night, clad only in a towel, half-naked.

Could this be considered innocence?

How ridiculous!

However, I couldn't be bothered to care about the connection between a jerk and a harlot.

I just want to save my son.

I bluntly said, "I have no interest in whatever happened between you and Riley. You need to come with me immediately to Aurora Hospital. Ethan was in a car accident, and a steel rod pierced through his chest, puncturing his heart with a risk of rupture. His situation is extremely critical.

Only you can perform this operation. We have only one hour left. Come with me quickly to save Ethan!"

As I reached for the scattered clothes on the sofa and tried to grab his arm, Riley preemptively grabbed his arm.

She held onto Zachary's arm, her ample bosom pressing tightly against it. A smirk appeared on her lips, which were full of mockery.

"Hannah, are you jealous? Is that why you came to my house late at night? But really, you're being too petty. Zach was just helping me out. My son got injured, and I can't handle it alone.

Even if you want to take him away, you don't have to curse your son so viciously. Would Ethan be happy if he knew that you used him as a tool for jealousy?"

Zachary glanced over at Riley's injured son sitting in the corner of the sofa.

When he looked back at me, his face was full of disgust.

"Have you had enough of acting? Such an embarrassment!

You're all mothers. But you better learn from Riley how to be a responsible mother!"

If I weren't in a hurry to save Ethan, I would have slapped this couple in the face.

I suppressed my anger and shouted anxiously, "Zachary Jennings, I'm not kidding you! Ethan is in the ICU now, waiting for you to go back for surgery. If you don't take out the steel bar as soon as possible, he will die!"

Zachary said impatiently, "That's enough, you're making a scene like a shrew. Was it because I abandoned you guys on the way today?

Aiden's leg was injured. Riley, as a single mother, is helpless with her kid. I'm just lending a helping hand. How can you be so lacking in compassion?"

A kid?

An 18-year-old kid who was taller than me?

It was just a scratch. Even if it didn't apply any ointment, it would also heal quickly.

I exploded in an instant.

"It's because of you! You abandoned Ethan and me for Riley's son, who was merely a scratch on the knee. You got Ethan hit by a car!

You are the only one who can save his life now! He is waiting for you to save him! Come back to the hospital with me now!"

Seeing that Zachary hesitated, Riley covered her mouth and chuckled, "Hannah, stop joking, all right? My son is injured, and your son is also injured now?

Only Zach can cure him? Bah!

If you are not happy that Zach treated my son, then I apologize to you. Stop cursing Ethan. He is also Zach's son."

I was so anxious that I broke out in a cold sweat, and my tone softened, almost begging.

"I'm telling the truth. Zachary, please, come with me to save our son. Please..."

Riley leaned in close to Zachary's ear, laughing seductively. "Zach, she's changed her strategy to playing the weak card. I have to admit, she's quite convincing."

Sure enough, as soon as she said this, Zachary looked at me with even more annoyance.

I became furious, and in a fit of anger, I pushed her away forcefully.

"A human life is at stake. Why are you laughing?

This is between me and my husband. It's none of your business!"

Seemingly caught off guard by my actions, Riley glared at me resentfully before throwing herself into Zachary's embrace, appearing aggrieved.

Zachary held her in his arms and pushed me away fiercely.

"Hannah, stop acting like a shrew! Get out of here!"

Aiden, who was sitting in the corner of the sofa, also rushed over and glared at me fiercely. "Get out of my house now, or I'll call the police!"

Riley screamed as she looked at the palm-sized scratch on her son's leg.

"Don't move, Aiden! Watch out for your wound!"

Aiden also hugged his legs at this moment and groaned in pain, "Mr. Jennings, my legs hurt so much!"

Zachary's attention was drawn. He bent down, examined Aiden's wound, quickly grabbed his clothes, put them on, and swiftly lifted Aiden onto his back before running out.

"Quick, send him to the hospital! If the wound is not treated properly, it will leave a scar!"

I quickly chased him out and grabbed him tightly before he closed the car door and broke down crying.

"Zachary, please, Ethan is really depending on you to save him. Please come with me to save him..."

Riley yelled, "Hannah, are you addicted to acting?

Don't you see that the wound on my son's leg will leave a scar if it's not treated? Do you deliberately stop us because you want to ruin my son's leg?

How can you be so vicious?"

Zachary, with a frown, ignored my pleas and desperate attempts to stop him. He kicked me to the ground and drove away, leaving me behind.

I got up and desperately ran after the car.

There was only one belief driving me. I must take Zachary to have surgery.

I must save Ethan.

I fell and got up again. My knees were bruised and bleeding, but I didn't feel any pain at all.

At the same time, I kept calling Zachary on my cell phone, begging him to believe me for once, to stop and go to Aurora Hospital to save Ethan.

At this time, the hospital called.

My heart skipped a beat, and I picked up the phone with trembling hands.

"Mrs. Jennings, the patient is experiencing significant internal bleeding in the heart and is in critical condition. We have issued a critically ill notification. Please come back as soon as possible to see him one last time..."

I collapsed in despair, falling to the ground and staring fixedly in the direction where the car disappeared...
