Chapter 1 of The Day I Left, the Company Fell Apart

A week before the year-end bonuses were due, HR called me into their office. The room felt unusually tense, with the blinds half-closed and papers strewn across the desk. They told me the company wasn't doing well financially and needed to cut costs. I nodded, keeping my expression neutral, even as their words left a bitter taste in my mouth.

At first, they hinted at trimming bonuses across the board. I agreed—it wasn't ideal, but it was fair. Then, the decision shifted. A day later, they informed me the company needed to make deeper cuts. The solution? Lay me off entirely, offering just one month's salary as compensation.

I didn't argue. I signed the papers, collected my payout and walked out of the building with my head held high.

The next morning, my phone wouldn't stop buzzing. Calls, texts and even emails from HR flooded in, all with the same frantic message: [Where are all the contracts? Come back here and find them! The company is in chaos!]

I let the phone ring until it fell silent. Then, I typed out a single message before blocking their number: [I've already resigned. Why would I go back to the company?]

I had been thrilled when the HR manager called me into the office. Could it be a raise? A promotion? My mind raced with possibilities as I stepped into the overly air-conditioned room. The faint hum of the printer and the muted clicks of keyboards outside the glass walls were a constant backdrop. I perched on the edge of the chair, eager but trying not to show it.

Hellen, the HR manager, didn't waste time. She clasped her manicured hands on the desk, her expression a practiced mix of sympathy and authority.

"You've been with us for a long time, Claire and we truly value your contributions," she began, her voice smooth yet distant, like a rehearsed speech. "But we're facing some challenges right now and we need everyone on board. We're in this together."

I blinked, thrown off by her tone. Something was off. "Challenges?" I asked, my voice cautious.

Hadn't I already been doing double duty—juggling my office clerk tasks with receptionist duties? What more did they expect?

Hellen's perfectly arched brow didn't flinch. "The company needs to make some difficult decisions, including reducing costs and improving efficiency. I hope you understand."

So, that's what this was about. My stomach tightened as realization hit.

"A pay cut?" I asked flatly.

For heaven's sake, my salary was only five hundred dollars a month. How much lower could it go?

Hellen hesitated, a flicker of discomfort crossing her face before she recovered. "Yes, your base salary will be reduced to three hundred dollars."

Three hundred dollars? My chest tightened as I stared at her, searching her expression for some hint of compassion. There was none.

"Alright, I agree," I muttered through gritted teeth.

The New Year was approaching and as long as the year-end bonus came through, I could make it work. That bonus had become my lifeline in a job that barely paid the bills, let alone allowed me to save.

Hellen beamed, clearly pleased with my compliance. "I knew you were a team player, Claire!" she chirped, rising and straightening her pencil skirt. Her heels clicked against the floor as she left, her air of smug satisfaction trailing behind her.

I remained in the chair, my hands clenched in my lap. Inside, I was calculating every penny of my reduced salary with growing dread.

Later that afternoon, Hellen reappeared, clutching a stack of papers. "Claire, make copies of these documents. We need them for the meeting later," she said briskly.

I bit back a sigh, taking the papers without protest. My desk was already cluttered with unfinished tasks, but before I could get started, Hellen spotted me sitting idle and seized the moment.

"Claire, while you're at it, make sure you sweep the floor and wipe down the trees at the entrance," she added, her tone laced with faux authority. "No need to clean the restroom, though. That's Janice's job."

I froze, my patience wearing thin. "Hellen, this isn't really part of my job, is it?"

Hellen tilted her head, her polished smile sharpening into a condescending smirk. "Claire, this is where you don't understand the bigger picture. The company is in crisis and everyone needs to do their part."

From the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of the boss lingering behind the ornamental tree in the hallway. He gave a subtle nod of approval as Hellen carried on, clearly emboldened by his silent endorsement.

Her voice dripped with self-importance. "It's all about the team effort, Claire. I'd think someone who's been here as long as you would understand that by now."

I could barely suppress my frustration, but for the sake of the bonus, I swallowed it down.

Grabbing a rag, I got down on my knees and began scrubbing the floor. The tile was cold and unyielding beneath me and every swipe of the cloth felt like another blow to my pride. My back ached, my knees throbbed and the damp smell of cleaning solution filled the air.

By the time I finished, the office was nearly empty. I stretched to ease the stiffness in my body, the fluorescent lights above casting a harsh glow on my disheveled appearance.

"Look at you, stretching so leisurely. Must be nice to have such an easy job!" Hellen's voice rang out again, sharp and mocking. She scanned the room with the intensity of a hawk, her eyes flitting over every surface like she was searching for a missed spot.

Something inside me snapped. "If you think this is an easy job, why don't you do it?" I shot back, my voice trembling with anger.

Hellen's smirk deepened. "What's the matter? Did I hit a nerve?" She crossed her arms, leaning against the doorway with a casual arrogance. "The company pays you to work, not to slack off. You've been here for years. Your year-end bonus is no small amount, is it?"

Her words felt like a slap. I clenched my fists, biting down the retort that burned on my tongue. Fine. I'd endure this, just a little longer.

For the sake of my bonus, I'd endure it all.
