Chapter 1 of The Custody Lie Between Us

The vanilla buttercream tasted like chalk the fourth time my phone buzzed against the bakery table.

Colin tapped his pen against our wedding guest list. “Ignore it, Molly. We still need to figure out where to put your uncle. He can't sit next to my mother.”

I turned the phone over.

County Child and Family Services.

“I have to take this.”

Colin's pen stopped. I answered before the call could roll to voicemail.

“Molly Whitaker.”

“Ms. Whitaker, this is Rosa Bennett, a county caseworker. Your sister, Lena, was stopped by police about an hour ago. She was cited for driving under the influence and possession of medication that wasn't prescribed to her.”

My fingers tightened around the phone. “Where is Sadie?”

“At the precinct with one of our intake workers. Because Lena was already under an outpatient treatment order, the court has sent her for a forty-two-day inpatient substance-use evaluation. Sadie needs a safe placement tonight. Your name is first on all fourteen of her school emergency-contact forms.”

Three years earlier, I had emptied $8,400 from savings to cover Lena's first rehab deposit. Since then, every landlord, teacher, and emergency-room nurse seemed to call me before they called anyone else.

“I'm coming.”

I stood so fast my chair scraped the tile.

Colin caught my wrist. “What happened?”

“Lena was arrested. They have Sadie.” I pulled free and grabbed my purse. “I need to get her.”

“I'll drive.”

Twenty minutes later, I pushed through the glass doors of the county family-services office. Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead. Sadie's purple unicorn backpack sat beside a plastic waiting chair.

I went straight to the counter. “I'm Molly Whitaker. Where is my niece?”

Rosa Bennett rose and slid a stapled packet toward me. “She's coloring in the interview room. She's safe. Before she leaves, I need you to read the emergency placement order.”

“I want to see her first.”

“You will. But I need you to understand the arrangement.” Rosa tapped the top page. “The duty judge approved temporary shared care between you and Sadie's father while we assess Lena's placement. Mr. Reeves's apartment has not completed the same-night home clearance, so Sadie can sleep at your address tonight if you sign the terms.”

I picked up the papers.

My name was on the first line.

The second name stopped me cold.

Daniel Reeves.

“No.” I dropped the packet. “I'm not sharing care with him.”

“He is Sadie's biological father, and there is no active order barring contact.”

“He is the man who helped destroy my sister.”

Rosa's expression did not change. “You don't have to like him. The court needs two adults to follow the safety plan. If you refuse this placement and we do not have another cleared home tonight, I have to use emergency foster care until the judge reviews the case.”

“You'd put an eight-year-old with strangers when her aunt is standing here?”

“I would rather not. That's why I'm asking you to sign.”

She turned the packet toward me and pointed to three highlighted conditions. Neither adult could remove Sadie from the county overnight without notice. Medical decisions had to be documented. Any disagreement went back to Rosa instead of being fought out in front of Sadie.

“This is not a permanent custody ruling,” Rosa added. “It is a safety bridge until the review hearing. Tonight is about where Sadie sleeps and who can reliably get her to school tomorrow.”

I hated that the explanation made sense. I hated more that Daniel's name was already printed beside mine before I ever walked through the door.

I stared at the blank line, then pressed the pen down hard enough to dent the paper.

The office door opened behind me.

Daniel stood in the threshold. Sadie's insulated lunch bag hung from one hand. A worn brass key ring dangled from the other.

I knew that key ring.

Nine years ago, Daniel and I had spent seven nights repairing the roof and burned-out exit signs at Brookfall Community Theater. He had given me that key so I could lock the tool room. He had asked me to be his date for opening night.

Then Lena had shoved a pink envelope into my hands. Inside was a positive pregnancy test and a sticky note marked 6 WEEKS.

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

Daniel walked to the counter. “Picking up my daughter.”

“Now you want to play dad? Where were you when she had strep last month? Where were you on her birthday?”

His jaw tightened. “How many more times are you going to cover for Lena?”

“I protect this family.”

“You protect Lena. You pay her bills, clean up her relapses, and tell everyone I disappeared.”

“You did disappear.”

“I was pushed out. By her, and then by you.”

“You made your choice when you slept with my sister.”

“I made one mistake nine years ago,” he said. “I did not stop being Sadie's father. Lena blocked hospital access, changed pickup instructions, and told you every missed visit was my decision. You believed her every time.”

“I believed what I saw.”

“No. You believed what made your guilt easier to carry.”

I took a step toward him. “Don't tell me what I carry.”

“Aunt Molly!”

Sadie ran from the back hall and wrapped both arms around my legs. Before I could bend down, she reached sideways and grabbed Daniel's jacket.

“Hey, bug.” Daniel immediately crouched to her height.

“Can Dad stay at your house tonight?” she asked me.

I froze. “Your dad has his own place, sweetie.”

“But Mom says a real home needs two adults.”

The glass door opened again. Colin hurried in, tie crooked from the drive. He draped his coat around my shoulders.

“I parked in the loading zone. Are we done? Can we take her home?”

Then he saw Daniel.

Colin's hand slid off my shoulder.

Daniel rose slowly. His gaze moved over Colin's suit and stopped on the silver business card clipped inside his breast pocket.

Price & Vale.

Something in Daniel's face changed.

He did not raise his voice. He did not look at me.

He looked directly at the man I planned to marry.

“Before you tell Molly what to sign,” Daniel said, “tell her how you know the Northgate Women's Clinic paperwork.”

Colin went completely still.
