Chapter 3

The drive to Pearl's house was as silent as the one to City Hall. He pulled the Toyota Camry up to the curb in front of a pleasant but modest suburban house with a perfectly manicured lawn.

Before she could open her door, he spoke. "My mother will ask questions. Keep it simple."

Candace nodded, her throat tight. "I know." She understood the need for a simple, unified story.

"I need your number," he said, his tone purely practical. He held out a sleek, dark phone. "For communication."

They exchanged numbers, tapping them into each other's phones. She saved him as 'Gauge Bailey'. She saw him glance at her name, 'Candace Price', on his screen before saving it.

He didn't get out. He didn't walk her to the door. He just waited until she had closed the front door behind her before the Camry's quiet engine pulled away from the curb.

The moment she was inside, Pearl enveloped her in an ecstatic hug, her warmth a comforting balm on Candace's frayed nerves.

A block away, out of sight of the house, the Toyota Camry pulled over to the side of the quiet street. Gauge Bailey got out, leaving the keys on the driver's seat. A moment later, a sleek, black Rolls-Royce Phantom glided to a silent stop beside him.

A man in a sharp suit, Sean Hayes, was in the driver's seat. He got out and held the rear door open. "Everything handled, Mr. Hendricks?" His tone was one of deep, unwavering respect.

"For now." Gauge-now Collin Hendricks-slid into the plush leather interior, loosening his tie. The entire air around him shifted. The stoic, awkward supermarket manager evaporated, replaced by the weary, powerful aura of a CEO. He rubbed his temples, a deep line forming between his brows.

"The marriage certificate," Collin said, pulling the folded document from his jacket and handing it to Sean. "File it securely. No digital copies."

"Understood, sir," Sean said, getting back behind the wheel. The partition between the front and back seats slid up with a soft whir. "To the Apex Holdings tower?"

"Yes. I'm already late for the quarterly review," Collin said, his gaze distant, already a million miles away from the woman he had just married. The Rolls-Royce merged seamlessly into traffic, a silent ghost of wealth and power, a world away from the Camry he had left behind.

Meanwhile, Candace was sitting at Pearl's kitchen table, eating a simple dinner of chicken and rice. Pearl was skillfully prying for details about the City Hall visit, her questions wrapped in cheerful chatter. Candace felt a pang of guilt as she lied to the kind woman, sticking to the simple story they hadn't even discussed. Yes, it was quick. Yes, the clerk was nice. Yes, she was happy.

After dinner, Candace insisted she had to leave. "I need to visit my grandmother," she explained.

Pearl's expression softened with understanding. She pressed a twenty-dollar bill into Candace's hand for a cab. This time, Candace accepted it.

The cab took her across town to the Serene Meadows Nursing Home. The name was a cruel irony. The place was clean but grim, with a lingering smell of antiseptic and overcooked vegetables.

She found her grandmother, Autumn Larsen, sitting in a wheelchair by a window, staring out at the darkening sky. She looked so frail, a pale shadow of the vibrant woman who had raised her.

Autumn's face lit up when she saw Candace. "My girl," she whispered, her voice thin and papery.

Candace knelt by the wheelchair and took her grandmother's cool, wrinkled hand, forcing a bright smile. "Hi, Grandma. How are you feeling?"

"Better, now that you're here," Autumn said, her eyes full of worry. "That Denese... has she been treating you alright?"

Candace's smile didn't waver, even as her heart ached. She couldn't tell her the truth. She couldn't add to her grandmother's burdens. "It's all sorted out, Grandma. I've found a new place to live. I'm fine. Everything is fine."

She didn't mention the marriage. It was too new, too insane, too impossible to explain.

Autumn’s expression turned thoughtful, her gaze vacant. An inexplicable sense of sadness overcame her:

“Was it your aunt who made you leave?”

Last night, Denese Casey and Finn argued so fiercely that Britteny Olsen couldn’t even persuade them to calm down. She didn’t dare to try either, fearing that her attempts to mediate would only prolong the argument. After all, this argument was directed at her.

Candace Price, fearing that another mother-in-law/daughter-in-law conflict might break out, quickly clarified:

“No, it’s my own decision to go out and live independently. Grandma, I can’t possibly stay at my uncle’s place forever.”

Autumn had tear stains at the corners of her eyes as she looked at her helpless granddaughter. The old woman’s heart ached with pity.

“What aunt’s house? That’s your home. Your parents are gone, and the company’s bankrupt. You have nothing left. That heartless woman, Denese Casey, is completely worthless. Not only did she force me to go to a nursing home, but she also forced you to leave as well.”

Unable to bear to see the old lady sad, Candace Price suppressed the bitterness in her heart:

“Grandma, they’re fine. Please don’t say that.”

She reached out to embrace the old lady. Tears streamed down her face. After taking a deep breath, she wiped the tears away and smiled sweetly:

“Grandma, when I make enough money, I’ll bring you there, and we’ll live together.”

Hearing Gu Nian’s words, the old lady felt even more heartbroken, with tears streaming down uncontrollably.

She looked around at the drab, impersonal room. This wasn't a home. It was a waiting room.

"I promise," Candace said, her voice thick with sudden, fierce emotion as she squeezed her grandmother's hand. "I'm going to work hard. I'm going to get a great job, and I'm going to get you out of here. We'll get our own place, just the two of us. I promise."

Her grandmother's eyes grew misty. She patted Candace's hand. "Just take care of yourself, dear. That's all that matters."

Candace stayed until visiting hours were over. As she walked out of the nursing home and into the cool night air, she felt the weight of the world on her shoulders. But beneath the weight was a new, unshakeable foundation of purpose. This sham marriage, this strange man, this bizarre new life-it was all a means to an end. An end that had her grandmother's smiling face.
