Chapter 3

Today we went to the hospital with James to have his stitches removed. Only Adam and I went in with James. I don't know where Caroline went.

After we were done, we went back to the parking lot. I saw Caroline waiting for us in the car. For some reason, I felt bad.

Adam drove and I sat beside him while Caroline accompanied James to play in the back. On the way, I saw Adam keep glancing at James and Caroline's interaction. The thirty-minute drive from the hospital felt like two hours.

"Honey, I have to return to the office to pick up some things. I'll be right back," Adam said after dropping us off at home.

"Okay. Be careful on the way," I said. Adam just nodded and left.

I went inside. I saw James sleeping on the sofa. I quickly picked him up and took him to his room, letting him rest for being a good boy and not making any trouble while removing his stitches.

I went downstairs to the kitchen to prepare dinner. I decided to make James' favorite meal.

In the middle of cooking, I felt the need to go to the bathroom, so I quickly made my way to the bathroom, which was not far from the kitchen.

As I was about to wash my hands after using the toilet, I saw a pregnancy test kit. Not just one, but three different brands. All of them showed two lines, positive.

Caroline is pregnant? I wondered. There are only two grown women in this house. She and I. I was declared infertile a long time ago and hadn't taken a pregnancy test recently.

I felt my chest tighten and tears well up. There was nothing left to save in this marriage. Not my desire to have a child, not James who was like my own son, not even my feelings.

I left the bathroom with three pregnancy test kits. I looked for Caroline to confront her. There was no need to look for her, she had found me first.

"You found this?" she asked guiltlessly. Even I could hear the pride in her voice.

"Yes, I found it. You don't have to tell me that it's Adam's son. I already guessed. How long has it been?" I said.

"Four weeks. I went to see the doctor today," Caroline said. My heart was disappointed because there was nothing left to save in our marriage.

I'm tired of it all—really tired. I walked away from Caroline, who stopped me and grabbed the pregnancy test.

"Aren't you jealous? Don't you want a child? Wasn't I nice to you, letting you take care of my son, and now I'm going to give you another one," she mocked. I just smiled sarcastically.

"I'm letting you take care of my kids with Adam. You can take care of everything. Let me be with Adam forever. And you. You'll be nothing more than a nanny!"

I didn't want to take her at her word. I wanted to walk away, but Caroline held my hand.

"Oh, I have some good news for you. After hearing that I'm pregnant. I'm sure Adam will marry me and divorce you. Even though he loves you, his desire to have many children has never been replaced. He was always more special to you.

I felt Caroline had gone too far.

"And I remember that you and Adam had already transferred your wealth to James. After my marriage to Adam, people will remember me as Mrs. Whitewood, and you will be forgotten, even though you made Adam's fortune grow, even to this point. But you will never own it, it will all be mine!"

The emotion provoked me to slap her without thinking.

"Agatha!" snapped Adam, who I think had just arrived.

"Why did you slap Caroline? You're so disrespectful!" he said.

I forced a smile and turning away. Just as I took a step, a firm hand clamped around my wrist.

“You’ve got to stop with this attitude, Agatha.”

I saw Caroline pretend to be in pain.

"I was rude?! Isn't she more disrespectful?! Having an affair with a married man?!" I saw Adam's face turn red with anger after I said that.

"What?! Do you want to get angry?! Shouldn't I be angrier?!" I snapped.

Adam started to open his mouth, but I quickly cut him off by saying, "I don't want anything to do with you anymore! I'm sending you divorce papers!"

I immediately left the house with only my cell phone and wallet in my purse, which I left in the living room.

I drove away in my car. Once I was far enough away, I immediately called my lawyer and close friend, Alicia.

"Alice, help me get the divorce papers," I said as the call connected.

"Why do you want a divorce all of a sudden? Isn't your marriage to Adam fine?" she asked.

I explained the betrayal I had discovered last week. This time, I couldn't hold back the tears—tears of sadness, disappointment, hatred, and anger mixed together.

"Let me help you. I'll make sure you get a divorce from him right away because he's cheating on you. That's against the law. Can you get a sample for a DNA test? It will speed up the divorce process."

"I can get it for you."

After hanging up the phone, I booked a flight home two hours later.

Before the plane took off, I saved the video of Adam and Caroline cheating and sent it to the family group.
