Chapter 3
Ezra POV:
A throbbing pain in my skull was the first thing I registered. The second was a profound, unsettling calm in my blood.
I opened my eyes to mud and damp leaves. I was on the riverbank.
I pushed myself up, my body aching. I immediately checked my curse. The Shadow Plague, the centuries-old torment that gnawed at my soul, was still there. But it was... quiet. Subdued. As if it had been soothed by a lullaby.
The Shadow Plague was not gone. It had only been forced into silence, as if something stronger had driven it beneath the surface.
For the first time in a hundred years, the constant, agonizing hum of its power was muted.
"My King."
Silas, the captain of my Shadow Guard, materialized from the trees, his men appearing silently behind him. They all dropped to one knee. His face was a mask of worry.
"You are unharmed?"
I rose to my feet, the familiar weight of my authority settling back on my shoulders. The air grew heavy with my presence.
"What happened?" I asked, my voice a low growl.
"You dismissed half the Guard when the Shadow Plague surged," Silas said. "We followed the Rogue disturbance upstream as ordered. Your scent and energy vanished near the river, and the plague disrupted the tracking link. Then they reappeared, weakened, on the opposite bank. We also found a faint trail of winter-mint scent and foreign life force leading into the woods, but it disappeared before we could follow it."
The trail was thin, but it was not random. Whoever had touched me had carried a trace of my energy away with her. If she was still alive, that trace would lead us to her.
I remembered a woman in the water. Her scent was like winter snow and crushed mint, clean and sharp. She had touched me. She had drawn the plague away from my blood, even as she drained my strength.
She had attacked me. And she had nearly cured me.
"Find her," I commanded, my voice echoing with a power that hadn't been there moments before. "A woman with hair like spun silver. She can suppress the curse."
Silas's eyes widened in shock. "A White Wolf? My King, they are thought to be extinct."
"She is not extinct," I said, my hand unconsciously going to the back of my neck where a new ache was forming. "She is very, very real. And I want her."
Arden POV:
By the second night after the attack, I found a derelict hunter's cabin deep in the woods. The poison had stopped spreading, but the damage remained: a fever, two cracked ribs, and a right hand that shook whenever I tried to grip the knife. It was a temporary reprieve, not a recovery.
After cleaning and binding my wounds, my mind went to work. Revenge. I needed it, but I couldn't get it alone. I needed power. An ally.
I thought of the man in the river. The sheer, raw energy he possessed was unlike anything I had ever felt. If his men were searching for me, he was either important enough to be protected—or dangerous enough to make every other power in this realm hesitate.
A faint chill moved through the trees outside. Then came the subtle scrape of boots against dead leaves. Someone had followed the trace from the river.
As if summoned by my thoughts, the cabin door was blasted off its hinges.
A tall, broad-shouldered man filled the doorway, his presence sucking all the air from the room. His eyes, the color of molten gold, pinned me where I stood. Behind him, a dozen figures in black stood like statues.
It was him.
My hand crept to the knife hidden in my sleeve. My face remained a mask of calm.
He stepped inside, each footstep a silent threat. He stopped a few feet away, his gaze sweeping over me, intense and possessive.
"It was you," he stated, his voice a deep rumble that vibrated in my bones. "You attacked me in the river."
"I needed to live," I said, my voice steady. I would not show fear.
A corner of his mouth lifted in a humorless smirk. "You did more than live. You nearly drained me dry. Do you have any idea who I am?"
I met his gaze without flinching. "A powerful man with a curse. A man who needs a cure."
His eyes narrowed, the gold turning dangerous. The air crackled with tension. One of his guards took a step forward, a low growl in his chest, but the man raised a hand, stopping him.
"What do you want?" he asked.
This was it. My one chance.
"I need a shield," I said. "A protector. Someone who can help me bring the House of Knight to its knees."
He actually laughed, a short, incredulous bark. The sheer audacity. A lone, wounded Omega, trying to bargain with a man powerful enough to make his guards tremble.
I held his gaze, my own unwavering. "And I," I said, my voice dropping to a whisper, "am your only known chance at a cure."
I stepped forward, closing the distance between us. I reached out and let my fingertips brush against the silver brand of his curse on his wrist.
A faint black smoke hissed and dissolved where I touched him. He let out a sharp, involuntary gasp, a tremor running through his powerful frame.
His golden eyes widened, shock and disbelief warring within them.
"You are not curing it," he said. His gaze dropped to the fading smoke. "You are forcing it back."
"For now," I replied. "I can suppress it. I may be able to remove it eventually. But not if I am dead, and not if you allow the Knights to bury me before I reach them."
He was the most powerful being I had ever encountered. My gambit had paid off. The most powerful piece on the board was now mine to play.
He needed to live. He needed to be free of the centuries of pain. He had no other choice.
His golden pupils contracted, and he let out a sigh of resignation.
"You will help me control the plague once every three days," he said at last. "In return, I will protect you until your name is cleared or the next new moon, whichever comes first. I will not force a mate bond on you, and you will not command me to kill without cause."
The terms were better than I expected. They were also a warning: he was not submitting. He was making a treaty. A treaty sealed by his title and my ability to keep him alive.
He visibly composed himself, pulling back his aura of command, tucking away the king and leaving... something else.
"Deal," he said, his voice low and resigned. "From this moment, I am your Sworn Shield."
