Chapter 1 of The Art of a Silent Exit

On the third day of my silent protest, Alvin—my fiancé and CEO—approved a Napa Valley vacation for his brand director, Cassidy.

He thought I'd fly into a rage, just as I always did. I didn't.

When he returned a month later, he saw it instantly: I had changed.

He sided with Cassidy, stole my award-winning design, and expected me to erupt. I didn't. I just silently took the fall.

He destroyed everything I had built, just so she could secure her position.

I didn't fight back. I let him do it, taking all the blame.

Cassidy gloated. "See? I told you. You can't go soft on Xena. Just be firm with her—she'll bend. She's terrified of losing you. That's why she'll always do what she's told."

Alvin bought every word, praising her for knowing exactly how to handle me.

Then he pulled me aside, dangling a promotion, more equity, and even a lavish Aspen wedding—the first time he’d ever so much as breathed a word about it.

But he’d missed one tiny detail: while he was off on his little getaway, he had already signed my resignation letter.

And I had already dumped him.

Just like that. A clean break.

"Xena, Alvin needs this competitive analysis, like, yesterday. Sorry to dump this on you, but it has to be done before you leave."

Cassidy Shaw, Alvin's brand director, dropped a stack of files onto my desk with the haughty air of someone who thought she was the queen of the company.

I took them. "Got it."

But she wasn't finished. With a smile still playing on her lips, she added, "Alvin and I have a dinner meeting later. Remember to book his favorite French restaurant for him. Oh—and clean the coffee machine in his office before you go."

Then she sashayed away as if she owned the place, the confident click of her heels echoing her soaring mood.

The office around me fell silent. My colleagues shot me that awkward look—half pity, half resignation.

Everyone knew that Alvin Prescott, the CEO of AuraVerse, was my fiancé. And everyone also knew about his blatant favoritism, with Cassidy as his clear favorite.

He had poached her from a rival company, made her brand director, and then credited her for "Genesis," the award-winning project I had spearheaded.

When I protested, he shot me down in a board meeting, furious that I had challenged him.

He was wrong. The entire core team was on my side, but with Alvin in her corner, Cassidy got all the credit.

He was livid. He accused me of forming cliques at the company. It wasn't just about handing my project over to someone else—he publicly removed me from the core team and slashed the project budgets of the colleagues who had supported me.

No one dared to say a word.

Later, he apologized. He said he didn't want our personal relationship to affect company decisions. Said Cassidy might feel like an outsider.

I used to buy that bullshit. Now? What a joke.

Cassidy barely had the professional skills of an intern.

'Don't want our personal relationship to affect company decisions'? Please. It was naked favoritism. Anyone with eyes could see it.

I heard footsteps on the upper floor and looked up. It was Alvin.

He appeared at the top of the stairs, glanced in my direction, and then headed out without a word, dressed in a tailored suit. Even from a distance, I could see the Patek Philippe on his wrist.

He never used to wear a watch. That one? A gift Cassidy had helped him pick out.

Oh yes, he knew exactly what he was doing.

For years, he'd been playing these little games.

It started when I found their flirtatious DMs on Instagram. I couldn't stay silent—I confronted him.

Alvin called me paranoid. Then, as if to prove a point, he used it as an excuse to "legitimately" promote Cassidy to brand director.

The angrier I got, the more he escalated—taking her to his social events, pouring her wine at company dinners, and even brushing a stray strand of hair from her face in public.

When we fought, he gave me the silent treatment. After I apologized, he'd gather his friends to lecture me, calling me a jealous lunatic.

For a while, I really blamed myself. I thought maybe I wasn't understanding enough. I thought maybe that was why we had ended up here.

But on the third day of one of his silent treatments—when I was bedridden with a migraine, and he was still packing his bags to go to Art Basel in Miami with Cassidy—I gave up.

That was the moment I understood: he wasn't trying to be a good person. He was just using my "paranoia" as a shield so he could keep doing whatever he wanted.

Even if I hadn't found those DMs, he would have found another excuse to be with her.

After their last business trip, they were back to their old routine of dinners, drinks, and parties. But the air between them had shifted. I could feel it.

It didn't matter anymore.

Our five years together were over.

This farce had gone on long enough.

I was the last one in the office, finishing the report. I glanced at my phone—Cassidy had been busy posting.

A night view from a rooftop bar. Two wrists, one draped over the other, against a backdrop of city lights. Alvin, dapper and flawless, his watch and her bracelet glinting in the light.
