Chapter 1 of The Alpha's Hidden Heir - The heir

Aurora Vale had never asked fate for much.

She hadn't asked for a mother who died too soon, or a pack that looked through her like she was made of glass, or a small room in the east wing of the pack house that smelled like damp wood no matter how many windows she opened.

She hadn't asked for any of it.

So when fate finally offered her something - something real, something that felt like it belonged to her - she made the mistake of believing it.

---

She found out three days before the ceremony.

She'd been crossing the eastern courtyard, arms full of library returns, head down against the autumn cold, when Kael Draven walked out of the training hall twenty feet ahead of her.

She'd seen him a hundred times.

He'd never once looked at her.

But this time, something happened.

It started in her chest - a pull so sudden and so violent it stopped her mid-step. Like something inside her had reached forward without permission. Her books nearly hit the ground. Her breath left her body completely.

And then the feeling clarified into something she recognized from every pack lesson she'd ever sat through.

The mate bond.

Her wolf pressed forward, certain and urgent, with a recognition that left no room for doubt.

*Him.*

Kael hadn't slowed. Hadn't turned. He walked on with the unhurried authority of someone who owned the ground he moved across.

He hadn't felt it.

Or he had - and chosen, in the space of a breath, to keep walking.

Aurora stood alone in the courtyard until her legs remembered how to work.

She spent three days telling herself she was wrong.

She spent three days quietly, desperately, hoping she wasn't.

---

The ceremony hall was breathtaking the way it always was - candlelight drowning the stone walls in gold, crimson banners rippling from the ceiling, the ancient scent of pine resin and old magic threading through the packed crowd like a current.

Two hundred wolves.

Every unmated adult in the Black Moon Pack, dressed in their finest, humming with the particular electricity of a night when everything could change.

Aurora stood near the back wall.

Always near the back.

Her dress was ivory - simple, plain, hemmed by her own hand because she couldn't afford the seamstress and had too much pride to ask for help. Her dark hair fell loose around her shoulders. She had no one to braid it.

Across the room, Selene Voss held court near the center column.

Red gown. Perfect posture. Dark hair pinned with gold. She was laughing at something one of her friends had said, head thrown back, completely at ease - the way beautiful people were at ease in spaces that had always been designed for them.

Her eyes found Aurora's across the crowd.

The laughter didn't stop. It just changed shape.

Aurora looked away.

---

The Elder called the ceremony to order at midnight.

The crowd stilled.

And then Kael Draven stepped into the circle, and the stilling became something else entirely - a collective held breath, a room full of wolves responding to power the way they were built to, without choice or pretense.

Aurora gripped the wall behind her.

He was everything the rumors said and more. Tall, broad-shouldered, dark-haired, with the kind of stillness that wasn't peace but controlled force. His eyes were pale grey and they moved across the room slowly, deliberately, the way a predator scans an open field.

She felt the bond tighten in her chest when his gaze swept her section of the room.

*Don't hope.*

She hoped.

She couldn't help it.

---

The Elder spoke the old words.

Aurora felt them move through her like a current - the ancient syllables vibrating in her bones, drawing the bond to the surface the way they were meant to.

Kael stood in the center of the circle.

She watched his jaw tighten.

She watched something move behind his eyes - grey and cold and fast - there and then sealed over before she could name it.

She pressed her hand flat against her sternum.

*Please.*

He opened his mouth.

---

"I reject the mate bond."

The hall went silent.

Not the anticipatory silence of before - something heavier. Shocked.

"I, Kael Draven, reject Aurora Vale as my fated mate."

Her name.

Her name in his voice, spoken with such complete and terrible certainty that it seemed to rearrange the air in the room.

For one moment, Aurora couldn't feel anything at all.

Then the feeling came back - all of it at once, crashing through the numbness like cold water - and she understood that this was what it felt like when something was taken from you before you'd ever properly had it.

The crowd turned.

Every face. One by one and then all at once, swiveling toward the back wall where she stood.

She felt them find her.

She kept her face still.

She had nothing left but that.

---

Selene's voice came first.

Warm. Amused. Perfectly calibrated to carry.

"Oh." She pressed two fingers to her lips in a performance of sympathy so thin it was nearly transparent. "The little omega." Her eyes moved over Aurora from hem to collar, slow and deliberate. "Fate must have made a mistake."

Someone laughed.

Others followed.

The whispers came in waves.

*Of course it's her.*

*Did she actually think he'd accept?*

*Look at her - she came in a dress she made herself.*

*Someone should have warned her.*

Aurora stared at the candle flame on the far wall.

She picked one and stared at it and breathed.

In.

Out.

She was not going to break here.

She was not going to give them that.

---

Kael had already turned away.

He moved toward Selene with the same unhurried certainty he did everything - no hesitation, no backward glance, no visible evidence that the last sixty seconds had cost him anything at all.

Selene stepped into the circle.

Her smile was radiant.

"He made the right choice," she said, not bothering to lower her voice. She looked directly at Aurora across the room. "Some of us were built for this. And some of us-" her gaze traveled down Aurora's altered dress one more time "-weren't."

The crowd exhaled.

Aurora released the wall.

She walked to the door.

Slowly. One step, then the next. Steady. Measured. She would not run. She would not stumble. She would give them nothing more to carry back to their dinner tables.

She made it into the corridor.

She made it through the side door.

She made it outside into the cold night air before her legs gave out.

---

She caught herself against the stone wall of the building.

The cold hit her face and she pressed her back against the stone and stared up at the sky - black, full of stars, indifferent.

She pressed both hands over her mouth.

She breathed.

She counted.

She told herself she was fine.

She was not fine.

The bond rejection moved through her in waves - physical, nauseating, a pain that had no single location because it was everywhere at once. Her wolf keened somewhere below the surface of her, a grief too large and too sudden to contain.

She slid down the wall.

She sat on the cold ground in her altered ivory dress and let the first tears fall silently, pressing her hands hard against her mouth so the sound stayed inside.

She was not going to be heard.

She was not going to be another story they told.

---

She didn't know how long she sat there.

Long enough for the cold to move through her coat.

Long enough for the music to start inside.

Long enough to understand, with a clarity that felt like the cruelest kind of gift, that no one was going to come.

No one had noticed she was gone.

She pressed one hand flat against the ground to push herself up.

And then the world tilted.

Not the dizziness of grief - something else. Something physical and sudden, moving through her from the ground up, like a vibration below hearing.

Her vision blurred at the edges.

She pressed her hand harder against the stone.

*What-*

And then the voice came.

Not from the courtyard. Not from the hall. Not from anywhere she could point to.

From somewhere inside the space between her heartbeats.

Low. Ancient. Certain.

*"Protect the heir."*

Aurora's hand flew to her stomach.

She didn't know why.

She didn't understand why.

She collapsed.

---

*The stars were the last thing she saw.*

*Cold and distant and completely indifferent.*

*And the voice - that impossible, sourceless voice - echoed in the dark behind her eyes long after everything else went quiet.*

*"Protect the heir."*

*She didn't know what it meant.*

*Not yet.*

*But her hand stayed pressed against her stomach.*

*Even unconscious.*

*Even in the dark.*

*Like her body already knew something her mind wasn't ready for.*
