Chapter 1 of The Alpha Who Stopped the Council

The moment I carved my mark into the registration stone for the Sacred Art Trial, words began drifting across my vision like smoke caught in moonlight:

[Here it comes! The fated-scent mate returns from the distant territories, steals the female lead's work, gets exposed and humiliated—total downfall!]

[Sure, the Alpha and his fated-scent were den-mates as pups, but they haven't crossed paths in seven or eight seasons. No way that compares to a bonded pair who've hunted side by side every moon!]

[Fated-scent? Please. Selene Ashford is just a vicious side character. Don't insult the term.]

A she-wolf dressed in the style I used to favor approached me, her scent carefully muted with common herbs.

"Greetings, I'm Vesper Thornvale from the neighboring pack grounds. I heard you're a gifted scent-artist—I've always wanted to meet you. I never expected we'd cross paths at the same Trial."

I gave her a cool nod, my wolf stirring uneasily beneath my skin.

After the Council Adjudicators announced the rankings, a red-eyed Vesper seized my arm, her claws barely sheathed.

"You switched our pieces, didn't you? How can you live with yourself, claiming victory through such foul tricks?"

Kael Frostclaw, the golden-furred Beta Enforcer-Judge, pinched the bridge of his nose so hard a fly could've died in the crease.

"Go to the Council Ring yourself and withdraw your claim. You have no right to compete in the final rites."

Contemptuous stares bore into me from every direction, dozens of wolves with their hackles raised. I pointed at the worst piece hanging on the ceremonial wall—a muddled mess of herb-paste and ash that barely held any resonance.

"Win what, exactly?" I asked, genuinely confused. "I came in dead last. I couldn't make the final rites if I tried."

The comments exploded across my vision:

[Wait WHAT?! What's happening?!]

1.

Vesper's jaw dropped, her carefully crafted expression cracking.

"Aren't you supposed to be some kind of prodigy? There's no way that... that pup's scratching is yours!"

Kael—who had pretended not to recognize my scent during registration—seized my wrist with bruising force.

"Selene! You've been trained in the sacred arts since you could walk. You studied in the far territories for seven or eight seasons. How could you possibly rank last?"

I was momentarily speechless, my wolf bristling at his grip.

If he recognized me, then he should know.

I've always trained in oil-scent painting—the art of mixing pigments with sacred herbs and wolf-ash to create works that speak to the soul. Not traditional rune-craft. Not the ceremonial style this Trial demanded.

I only entered because my parents mentioned Kael was serving as one of the Council Adjudicators. They wanted me to surprise him, to reconnect with an old ally's son.

It was supposed to be casual. I never intended to place.

Then those ominous comments appeared the second I pressed my claw to the registration stone.

"I wager this isn't your first time," Kael spat, his wolf bleeding into his voice. "All those honors you've claimed—stolen, weren't they? We grew up together. I won't stand by and watch you keep making such grave mistakes!"

I blinked, struggling to process his rapid accusations.

When had I ever stolen anyone's work?

And "grew up together"?

Our fathers' packs had formed territory alliances a few times. We'd met maybe three or four occasions at formal gatherings—the last one seven or eight seasons ago, when we were barely more than pups.

How did that qualify as growing up together?

But Kael had already delivered his judgment.

"You're going to withdraw your claim willingly. Then you'll stand before the Council Ring and return every honor that doesn't belong to you." His grip tightened until I felt my bones grind. "Don't make me break off our claiming intent."

He was strong—Beta-strong, his wolf lending him power. He dragged me several steps before I could even think of resisting.

"Claiming intent?" I repeated, my voice sharp with disbelief.

My parents had never mentioned any such arrangement. They'd always supported me finding my fated-scent on my own terms, choosing my own mate when the moon revealed them to me.

What was he talking about?

My bewildered expression must have looked like fear to him.

Disdain flickered through his amber eyes, his wolf peering out with cold judgment. "If my parents hadn't asked me to look after you, I wouldn't give you a second glance."

Vesper, tears still glistening on her cheeks like morning dew, played the gracious victim with practiced ease.

"If she won't admit her wrongdoing, let's just drop it. It's only a Trial. There's always the next moon cycle."

Before I could reiterate that I'd genuinely placed last—no tricks, no schemes, no scent-tampering—Kael stepped protectively in front of her, his broad shoulders blocking her from view.

"Your pack can barely keep their hunting grounds fed. You were counting on winning first place to earn your place among the ranked wolves! By the next moon, you won't even have territory to call your own anymore!"

His jaw clenched, his expression one of anguished admiration as he gazed at Vesper.

"You're too strong for your own good. I've offered to help—tribute, hunting rights, anything—but you insist on doing everything yourself. You're nothing like those pampered high-born Omegas who've had everything handed to them since they first shifted..."
