Chapter 1 of The $1,000,000 Missing Person is Firing You Today

"Mrs. Caldwell, I cannot ask you again."

The clipboard scraped across the scuffed linoleum of Memorial Hospital's waiting area, stopping forcefully against my thigh. Nurse Davis stood over me, her arms crossed tightly over her green scrubs.

"I need a family member's signature," she said, tapping a manicured fingernail against the paper. "The surgical team has been prepped and waiting for forty-five minutes. Dr. Evans has another excision scheduled at four."

"Just give me another minute," I told her, my voice completely flat.

"We don't have another minute. If your emergency contact isn't here, we lose the operating room."

I stared down at the glowing screen resting in my palm. Eleven outgoing calls. Eleven red canceled icons stacked in a neat, pathetic row.

I tapped the phone screen to wake it up. I dialed Ethan's number for the twelfth time. It rang exactly twice before the automated voicemail system kicked in. He was sending me straight to reject.

A new text notification popped up at the top of my screen.

"Today is Chloe's piano recital. Stop making everything about you."

I read the words three times. Chloe wasn't my daughter. Chloe was Sue's daughter.

Right below the text, an audio file arrived from Leo, our sixteen-year-old son. I pressed play, holding the speaker close to my ear.

"Mom, seriously?" Leo's voice whined, loud enough for Nurse Davis to hear. "Dad said you're at the clinic again. You always do this. You always get sick whenever Dad and I have something important. Just take an aspirin or whatever. Chloe is playing Beethoven, and you're ruining the mood. Dad is super annoyed. Bye."

The audio cut out, leaving a sharp beep echoing in the quiet corridor.

My own son. The boy I carried for nine months, the boy I stayed up with through every fever and nightmare. He was annoyed that my illness was ruining the mood for his father's old flame's child.

"Is your husband on his way or not?" Nurse Davis asked, shifting her weight from one foot to the other.

I opened my mobile banking app instead of answering. A fresh transaction sat at the top of the ledger, processed just twenty minutes ago.

Four thousand dollars. Lakeside Summer Camp. Paid directly from my joint account with Ethan.

"He isn't coming," I said.

"Excuse me?"

"He is busy." I locked the phone. "He's at a piano recital for his ex-girlfriend's daughter. He just paid her summer camp tuition."

Nurse Davis blinked, her impatient posture faltering for a second. "Ma'am, I'm sorry, but hospital policy requires someone to assume liability."

"Sixteen years ago," I interrupted, looking up at the nurse. "I handed my husband a cashier's check for five hundred thousand dollars. It was every cent my mother left me when she died. I bought him his empire. Caldwell Enterprises exists because I paid for the foundation."

"I don't see what that has to do with the surgery consent."

"It means I have paid enough." I grabbed the cheap plastic pen attached to the clipboard. The plastic cracked slightly under the pressure of my thumb. "For ten years, he has drained our accounts to pay for Sue's lifestyle. Braces. Private tutors. Camp. I am done waiting for him."

"Mrs. Caldwell, you cannot authorize your own high-risk procedure."

I pressed the pen to the paper. I signed my name, Evelyn Caldwell, on the primary authorization line.

I moved to the box labeled Relationship to Patient.

I pressed the tip down hard and wrote the word Self.

The ink tore straight through the thin paper, leaving a jagged scratch on the page beneath it.

"You can't do that," Nurse Davis protested, reaching for the clipboard.

I yanked it out of her reach and shoved it directly against her chest. "It's done. Take me to the room."

"Legal won't accept this!"

"Let legal sue me," I shot back. "If I die on the table, they can collect from my estate."

Another text vibrated against my palm. Ethan again.

"Don't bother coming home tonight if you're going to act like a martyr."

I didn't type a reply. I didn't shed a single tear. I held the power button until the screen went black.

An orderly pushed a wheelchair down the corridor, the wheels squeaking against the polished floor. He stopped right beside the bench.

"Transport for Caldwell," he announced.

I stood up. My knees shook slightly, but I forced my spine straight. I walked past the orderly, stopping at the tall biohazard trash bin near the double doors. I dropped my phone into the slot. It hit the bottom with a hollow, final thud.

"I'll walk," I told the orderly.

The corridor leading to the surgical wing felt like an icebox. Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting pale shadows against the sterile white walls. My bare feet dragged inside the thin hospital socks. Each step sent a sharp ache through my abdomen, a brutal reminder of the mass growing inside me.

The orderly guided me into Operating Room 4. The surgical table sat in the center, a narrow slab of metal surrounded by towering monitors and trays of gleaming instruments.

"Hop up," a man in blue scrubs instructed. He pulled a pair of latex gloves from a wall dispenser, snapping them over his wrists. "I'm Dr. Aris, your anesthesiologist."

I climbed onto the table. The paper sheet crinkled loudly under my weight.

"Name and date of birth?" a circulating nurse asked from the corner of the room.

"Evelyn Caldwell. October fourth."

"Allergies?"

"None."

"Who is in the waiting room for you?" she asked, typing on a keyboard.

"No one."

The typing stopped. The nurse exchanged a quick glance with Dr. Aris.

"Are you sure nobody is coming?" Dr. Aris asked, strapping a blood pressure cuff around my left bicep. "We usually give updates to the family every two hours during a complex excision."

"There is no family."

A younger nurse stepped up to my right side, swabbing the back of my hand with an alcohol pad. "Little pinch," she warned, sliding an IV needle into my vein.

I didn't flinch. The sting in my hand was nothing compared to the hollow rotting sensation in my chest.

"Heart rate is a bit elevated," Dr. Aris noted, glancing at the monitor above my head. "Nervous?"

"Just tired."

"We're going to take good care of you," he said gently. He picked up a clear plastic mask attached to a corrugated tube. "I'm going to place this over your nose and mouth. I need you to count backward from ten."

He hovered the mask inches from my face. The sharp, sterile scent of medical gas drifted over my skin.

I reached up and grabbed his wrist.

Dr. Aris froze. "Ma'am?"

My fingers dug into his forearm. I stared directly into his eyes, ensuring he heard every single syllable over the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor.

"If I die on this table," I told him, my voice turning to ice, "don't notify anyone."
