Chapter 1 of Thanksgiving Dinner Deception

I'd been cooking since dawn. The turkey had been basting for hours, filling the house with that warm, golden smell that's supposed to mean family and gratitude. I'd made Eleanor's favorite cranberry sauce from scratch, the one with orange zest that takes forever to set properly. The table gleamed under the chandelier, each place setting arranged with the expensive china Eleanor insisted we use for holidays.

My hands ached from peeling potatoes. My back hurt from standing. But I'd smiled through it all because this was what you did for family. This was what made a home.

The doorbell rang at exactly six o'clock. Eleanor was always punctual.

I wiped my hands on my apron and hurried to answer, already composing my greeting in my head. Connor brushed past me from the living room, moving faster than I'd seen him move in months. Something tightened in my chest, but I pushed it away. He was probably just eager to see his parents.

When I opened the door, Eleanor stood on the threshold holding a bundle of blankets. Not a casserole dish or a pie. Blankets.

My smile froze.

"Hello, Florence." Her voice carried that schoolteacher crispness, the tone that brooked no argument. She stepped inside without waiting for an invitation, Wilson shuffling behind her with his eyes on the floor.

The blankets moved. A tiny fist emerged, then a muffled cry.

A baby.

Eleanor was holding a baby.

"Close the door, dear. We have important family matters to discuss." She walked straight to the dining room, her heels clicking against the hardwood with military precision.

I followed because I didn't know what else to do. My mind had gone blank, wiped clean like a chalkboard. Connor stood by his chair, his face pale, one hand gripping the back of it so hard his knuckles had gone white. Wilson took his seat and immediately started fiddling with his napkin, folding and unfolding it in precise thirds.

Eleanor placed the baby—the actual baby—directly in the center of my beautiful table, right between the turkey and the sweet potato casserole. The child's cries grew louder, but she didn't seem to notice or care.

"There's no easy way to say this, so I'll be direct." She reached into her purse and pulled out a document, setting it beside the infant with the same casual efficiency she might use to place a salt shaker. "This is Connor's son. We had a paternity test done. Ninety-nine point nine percent certainty."

The words came at me like separate bullets. Connor's. Son. Paternity test.

I looked at my husband. He was staring at his shoes.

"The mother is Marceline Hunter. I'm sure you remember her—Connor's childhood friend." Eleanor's lips curved into something that wasn't quite a smile. "She's waiting in the car. She didn't think it appropriate to come inside."

How considerate.

My legs had started shaking. I gripped the edge of the table.

"Now, Florence, before you get emotional, let me explain the arrangement we've come to." Eleanor adjusted her reading glasses, a gesture I'd seen a thousand times before she delivered one of her pronouncements. "Marceline is willing to sign over full custody rights to you and Connor for thirty thousand dollars. It's quite reasonable, really, considering the circumstances. This way, the child stays in the family bloodline where he belongs, and we avoid any messy public scandal."

Thirty thousand dollars. To buy a baby. Connor's baby. With another woman.

"We've already worked out the details." She patted the document like it was a term paper that had earned an A. "Connor and I discussed this with Marceline three months ago, when she first discovered she was pregnant. We all agreed this was the best solution for everyone involved. The Bell family finally has an heir, Marceline gets compensated for her trouble, and you—"

She paused, tilting her head as if considering how to phrase a great compliment.

"—you finally get to fulfill your duty as Connor's wife. After five years of marriage without producing a child, surely you must see how fortunate this is. You'll finally have a baby to care for, a son to carry on the Bell name. Really, Florence, you should be grateful."

Grateful.

The word hung in the air above my destroyed Thanksgiving dinner.

I looked at Connor again. Still not meeting my eyes. His wedding ring caught the light as he shifted his weight. I'd saved for three months to buy him that ring. It had mattered to me that it was perfect.

"You planned this." My voice came out strange, distant. "Three months ago. You all sat down and planned this. While I was..."

While I was what? Making his lunches? Doing his laundry? Lying beside him every night believing we had a real marriage?

"Now, Florence, don't be dramatic." Eleanor's tone sharpened. "This is a family matter, and we're handling it as a family. The thirty thousand will come from your joint account, naturally. It's the least you can do to secure the family legacy."

The baby wailed louder, his tiny face red and scrunched. Nobody moved to comfort him.

I stared at that paternity test, at the numbers and official stamps that were supposed to make this nightmare real. At the infant crying on my table. At my husband who wouldn't look at me. At my mother-in-law who was discussing buying a human being the way you'd discuss buying a car.

And something inside me that had been bending for five years finally snapped clean in half.
