Chapter 3
Soon, the truth extractor released the first of my memories. It was when Nathan confessed to me.
“Emily, when I first saw you, I fell in love with you! I am willing to treat you well for a lifetime! Will you be my girlfriend?”
At a class party, Nathan suddenly appeared, walking straight toward me with a bouquet of bright red roses. He knelt down on one knee. I loosened my grip on my forks and stood there, dumbfounded.
My friend Ava excitedly shook my hand and said, “Oh my god! It’s so romantic. Emily, you love romance the most, don’t you?”
“If it were me, I would definitely say yes!” Zoe echoed.
With their encouragement, the rest of the class started applauding and chanting, “Together! Together! Together!”
“Emily?” Nathan asked when he saw me remain silent.
I blurted out, “But we don’t know each other well enough!”
At that time, the only connection between us was being in the same class. In fact, I might not even recognize him outside of school.
He pushed his glasses up and stared at me intently, as if trying to see through me. “Emily, we can get to know each other slowly after we become boyfriend and girlfriend! I promise you; I will treat you well for the rest of my life! And I think you are the one.”
“Agree to him!” Ava snatched the roses and quickly stuffed them into my arms. “You often praise Nathan for being handsome in the dorm, don’t you? Now that the handsome guy is confessing to you, why don’t you say yes quickly?”
Nathan stood up and tightly held my hand. “Emily, I will always treat you well!”
Chapter 4
The first memory abruptly ended.
[What happened? Why is there no memory afterward?]
[I was there! I know what happened next! Emily immediately agreed to be with Nathan!]
[But the woman didn’t seem too willing! And the guy confessed out of nowhere and then suddenly left.]
[Don’t judge too harshly! Even if she was hesitant, she still agreed! Besides, a confession is supposed to be a surprise. I don’t think a sudden confession is scummy behavior!]
Most of the bullet comments were defending Nathan, but the judgment reached a contradictory conclusion.
After extracting the truth from all aspects, it was confirmed that the scumbag situation was real! Nathan’s face turned black in an instant.
The audience was buzzing with discussions.
[Is it really scummy to confess suddenly? I just see a guy who cherishes his girl, his eyes full of love!]
[Haha, face reading again! I was just thinking, a relationship is private. Confessing in public, isn’t that emotional blackmail?]
[First you say not confessing is disrespectful, now you say confessing grandly is also disrespectful? What do women want?]
[And don’t forget, there are so many materialistic women nowadays! I miss the old days when I won my wife over with just one sentence!]
At this moment, a memory that wasn’t mine appeared on the screen. It was Nathan avoiding me and talking to the class about going out for milk tea.
“Guys, I plan to confess to Emily at the party tomorrow. Bros, give me some support!”
“Once it’s done, I’ll buy game consoles for the boys and luxury cosmetics for the girls!”
He then approached Ava, whispering to her. Ava patted his chest and promised, “Don’t worry, she’s introverted. A public confession in the lobby will definitely work! If she refuses the flowers, I’ll handle it. After all, you’ve passed our ‘assessment.’ We’ll make sure she’s happy with you.”
Nathan smiled and said, “Thanks a lot! I thank you on behalf of Emily!”
The screen then showed Nathan giving luxury cosmetics and Hermes bags to my three roommates, who kept feeding him information about my schedule and preferences. Their attire kept changing, showing they had planned this for a long time.
The next scene showed Nathan taking my phone and publicly announcing our relationship. I ignored the person next to me who was breathing heavily. The final scene froze on the day I returned to the dormitory, barely holding myself together with medication.
In fact, I had been suffering from selective mutism for a long time. Under severe stress, I completely relied on those around me.
Chapter 5
Ava, clearly panicked, stood up to explain. “I didn’t agree just because of Nathan’s gifts. I knew about Emily’s condition of selective mutism. I thought a new relationship would help her heal from her trauma!”
Zoe agreed, “Yes! We assessed Nathan for a long time and felt he was worthy of our Emily!”
Nathan also panicked and said, “I’m sorry, Emily. I just wanted to get to know you better! Back then, I was young and impulsive, and I made a lot of mistakes!” I sneered as I watched my three roommates cover for Nathan. It was clear the four of them were in cahoots. But don’t worry, none of you will escape this time.
The screen was flooded with messages.
[Clearly, the man knew about her in advance. He’s a true love warrior! You can’t blame him for her previous illness!]
[Haha, a law-breaking ‘pure love’ fairy who spies on others! All the luck to you!]
[I give up. There are more and more idiots now. I’m also a woman, and I think this guy is great! Sure, his methods were a bit extreme, but loving someone means understanding them!]
[Is this what you call a scumbag? Then my husband is one too because he makes my parents laugh at my embarrassing childhood stories every day! PS: Our relationship is great!]
At that moment, the screen started playing my second memory.
Nathan and I were on a trip, and I suddenly had a high fever due to a heavy rainstorm. I was delirious, constantly muttering, “I want to eat persimmon cakes from the neighboring city.”
Hearing this, Nathan hesitated, looking at the heavy rain outside and then at me lying weakly on the bed. He clenched his fists, as if making a determined decision. “Emily, hold on! I’ll be back soon!”
Three hours later, Nathan returned and was drenched, holding the persimmon cakes I had been craving. “Emily, here are the persimmon cakes you wanted!” His eyes were filled with infinite admiration, as if love had materialized.
And I simply took the persimmon cakes from his hands without a word of thanks.
[This is too much! Of course, I’m talking about the girl being bad!]
[Why are pure love warriors always paired with bad girls?]
[Sure, the confession was inappropriate, but going to another city in the pouring rain to get her favorite cakes? I see nothing wrong with that!]
[When will I have a boyfriend who treats me so well?]
Nathan smiled slightly at the barrage of support. But the next second, the judgment platform still found him guilty of being a scumbag!
Before the screen even changed, my mom spoke first: “Nathan always fulfills my daughter’s requests, even better than me. How can that be considered evidence of being a scumbag!”
