Chapter 1 of Substitute Bride: Dumped by My Husband, Adored by a Billionaire

"I will not be at the cemetery, Jess," Harvey said through the phone speaker.

"It is the anniversary," I replied, staring at the twin granite headstones. "You promised last year that you would not miss it again."

"I have back-to-back meetings. The board needs me here."

"Can they not wait? Just for an hour?"

"You know how the Crawford empire runs. I do not have the luxury of free time."

"I am just asking for one hour, Harvey."

"Stop nagging. I will see you tonight at my parents' house. Do not be late."

The line went dead. I lowered the phone, the cold wind biting at my cheeks.

"He is just busy, Mom," I whispered to the grave. "He is the CEO now. He provides for us. He loves me."

I repeated the words until they sounded almost true. Three years of marriage, and I spent most of it waiting for him to come home. But I understood. He carried the weight of his family's business.

Four hours later, I stood in the foyer of the Crawford estate. Crystal chandeliers cast a harsh glow over the catered banquet.

"Jessica, fix your posture," Eleanor, my mother-in-law, instructed as she handed me a flute of champagne.

"Sorry, Eleanor. It has been a long day."

"Leave your moods at the door," she scolded, adjusting her diamond necklace. "Tonight is about Nancy. Returning from Paris is a milestone. The least you can do is look presentable."

"I wore the dress you picked out."

"And yet you wear it like a funeral shroud. Smile."

"I visited my parents' graves today."

Eleanor waved a dismissive hand. "That was years ago. You need to focus on the present. On Harvey."

Nancy. Harvey's childhood best friend. I had never met her. She left for France right before Harvey and I started dating. Yet, her name echoed through this house constantly.

The heavy oak double doors swung open.

"They are here!" someone shouted from the parlor.

I stepped forward, expecting my husband to walk in alone. He didn't.

Harvey strode into the room. A petite woman in a stunning red dress clung tightly to his arm.

"Sorry we are late," Harvey announced, his voice booming over the string quartet. "Traffic from the airport was a nightmare."

I froze. He picked her up?

"Harvey," I called out, moving toward them.

He barely glanced at me. "Jess. Grab Nancy a drink."

My jaw tightened. "The waiters are circulating with trays."

Nancy giggled, a high, airy sound that grated on my nerves. "Oh, do not fuss over me, Harvey. I am just so happy to be home."

She didn't even look at me. She kept her eyes fixed on my husband, her fingers trailing down his lapel.

Harvey guided her to the center of the parlor. He grabbed a silver spoon and tapped his glass.

"Everyone, listen up," he ordered. The room fell silent. "We are here to celebrate Nancy. She conquered Paris, got her degree, and finally came back to us."

A polite round of applause rippled through the guests.

"I wanted to get you a graduation gift," Harvey continued. "Something to make sure you never leave us again."

He reached into his tailored suit jacket. He pulled out a thick, sealed manila envelope.

"Open it," he urged, pressing it into her hands.

Nancy hesitated, looking around the room. "Harvey, you shouldn't have. You already do so much for me."

"Just open it," he insisted.

Nancy slid a glossy folder from the envelope. She flipped it open and read the first page. She gasped, her manicured hands covering her mouth. "Harvey... is this real?"

"The deed is fully transferred," he confirmed, a proud smirk forming on his face. "Welcome home, Nance."

"A house? You bought me a house?" she squealed, throwing her arms around his neck.

He hugged her back, lifting her slightly off the floor. "I promised I would take care of you when you got back."

"Where is it?" someone from the crowd asked.

"The best neighborhood in the city," Harvey bragged. "Not just any house. 1420 Maple Drive."

The champagne flute slipped from my fingers.

It shattered against the marble floor, the sharp crack cutting through the cheers.

Silence swallowed the room.

"Jessica!" Eleanor hissed from behind me. "What is wrong with you?"

I ignored her. My eyes locked onto the document in Nancy's hands. My chest squeezed so tight it hurt to breathe.

"What did you just say?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

Harvey frowned, his celebratory mood breaking. "Watch your step, Jess. There is glass everywhere."

"The address, Harvey," I pushed forward, crunching the broken crystal under my shoes. "What address did you just say?"

"Maple Drive. The old Victorian property on the corner," he replied, clearly annoyed by the interruption. "What is your problem?"

"That is my house," I choked out.

Nancy blinked, her innocent act flawless as she looked between us. "Your house?"

"My parents' house," I said, my voice rising. "The house I grew up in. The one I begged you to help me buy back six months ago."

"It was sitting on the market," Harvey said flatly. "It is a good investment."

"An investment?" I demanded, closing the distance between us. "It is my family's legacy. You told me it was too expensive!"

"Real estate prices fluctuate."

"You told me we did not have the liquid assets to waste on nostalgia!" I shouted, the betrayal burning in my throat.

"Keep your voice down," he warned, his eyes narrowing.

"No!" Tears blurred my vision, hot and fast. "Today is the anniversary of their death. You refused to go to the cemetery with me because you were too busy. You told me you had board meetings!"

"I did have meetings."

"And then you went to the airport to pick up another woman? You bought my childhood home and gave it to her?"

Murmurs broke out among the guests. Eleanor grabbed my arm, her nails digging into my skin.

"Stop making a scene," she ordered. "You are ruining the evening."

I yanked my arm away. "My husband just gave my home to another woman. I do not care about your evening."

"Jessica!" Harvey snapped.

"Why her, Harvey? Why did you give her my home?"

Nancy shrank back, pressing herself against Harvey's chest. She looked up at him with wide, tear-filled eyes. "Harvey, I did not know. I swear. If I had known it was Jessica's, I never would have accepted it. I feel terrible."

"Do not apologize," Harvey assured her, rubbing her back. "It is not hers. It belongs to you now."

"Take it back," I demanded.

Harvey scoffed. "Excuse me?"

"You heard me. Transfer the deed to my name. I will pay you back every cent from my own savings."

"Your savings?" Harvey laughed, a cruel, sharp sound. "You do not have that kind of money, Jess. And I am not taking a gift back from Nancy."

"It is my home!"

"It is a piece of property," he shot back. "You need to grow up."

Nancy stepped forward, placing a gentle hand on my arm. "Jessica, please. Do not fight with him over this. If it means that much to you, I will let you visit. You may come over whenever you want."

I stared at her hand on my arm. "Do not touch me."

Nancy flinched, pulling her hand back as if I had burned her. "I am just trying to help."

"You want to help?" I asked. "Give me the folder."

I reached for the deed in her hands.

Harvey stepped between us, shoving my hand away.

"Do not you dare touch her," he growled.

I stumbled back, my shoe catching on a piece of broken glass. I barely caught my balance.

He wrapped a protective arm around Nancy's shoulders, shielding her from me.

"She is clearly unstable right now," Harvey said to the room, then glared at me. "Enough, Jessica. You are my wife. You need to be elegant and poised. What do you look like right now?"

I stared at him. The man I had loved for three years. The man I defended to my friends when he missed birthdays and anniversaries. The man I trusted blindly.

He was holding another woman, defending her, while I stood in the middle of a shattered glass puddle, my heart ripped open.

"I look like a fool," I whispered, the fight draining out of me.

"You act like one too," he replied coldly. "Go upstairs and fix your makeup. You are embarrassing the family."

I didn't move. My gaze drifted from his cold, hard eyes to Nancy's face.

She was tucked under his chin, playing the fragile, frightened victim. But as Harvey turned his head to apologize to a guest, Nancy's eyes met mine.

The fear vanished from her expression.

The corners of her mouth curled up into a slow, triumphant smile.

My blood ran cold.

This wasn't just a graduation gift.

This was a declaration of war.
