Chapter 1 of Stripped at the Gala, Claimed by the Billionaire Investor

I bought the silver dress with my own savings, hoping my secret husband of three years would finally look at me tonight. Adrian did look, his eyes lingering as I entered the anniversary gala. But his Vice President, Vanessa, noticed too. She cornered me in the center of the ballroom. "Is this what you wear when you go to hotel rooms with clients?" she sneered, her fingers digging into the delicate fabric of my backless gown. Before I could pull away, she yanked. The silk tore. The dress slipped, leaving me horribly exposed as dozens of phones lifted to record. I stared desperately at Adrian, the CEO, my husband. He stood paralyzed. "Vanessa. Enough," he finally muttered, choosing to protect his company's image rather than cover his wife. Then, a heavy suit jacket draped over my freezing shoulders. Ethan Cole, our billionaire lead investor, stepped between me and the cameras. "Do you want to leave?" he asked softly. I didn't look at my husband again. "Yes." I took Ethan's hand and walked out.

POV: Emma Carter

5:45 p.m.

Fifteen minutes until I could leave.

I kept watching the clock in the corner of my monitor while pretending to review a cash-flow model. My dress hung in a garment bag behind my office door. My makeup was already touched up. My reservation at Le Petit Rêve was for seven, and getting it had taken three weeks of calls.

Tonight was my third wedding anniversary with Adrian Bennett.

Three years married. Three years hidden.

At Northstar, Adrian was the CEO and I was a financial analyst several levels below him. The board did not know we were married. Most of our coworkers thought Adrian was single. His explanation had always sounded reasonable when I wanted to believe him.

If the board knew he had married an employee, they would question my promotions. They would question his judgment. We needed time.

Three years had apparently not been enough.

A stack of binders slammed onto my desk.

I jumped so hard my pen rolled to the floor.

Vanessa Croft, Northstar's Vice President of Operations, stood over me in a white blazer. She had joined the company two years after I did and moved up faster than anyone I had ever seen.

"European merger models," she said. "Final version on my desk by eight tomorrow morning."

I stared at the binders. "This is raw regional data."

"I know."

"There are three markets here. I need to clean the data before I can run the projections. That's two days of work."

Vanessa folded her arms. "Then work faster."

I kept my voice even. "I can finish the first market tonight and deliver the rest tomorrow afternoon. Anything faster risks bad numbers."

Her smile sharpened.

"Are you telling me you can't handle your job?"

Two analysts nearby stopped packing their bags.

"I'm telling you the timeline is unrealistic."

"There are twelve junior analysts downstairs who would love your desk." Vanessa leaned closer. "If you don't belong in this department, say so. Otherwise, I expect all three models by eight."

She walked away before I could answer.

My phone showed 5:52.

I opened my text thread with Adrian.

Vanessa just dropped the full European merger package on me. She wants the models by eight tomorrow. I can't make dinner. I'm sorry.

His reply came almost immediately.

Understood. I'll cancel the table.

I waited.

No Happy anniversary. No Are you okay? No I'll handle it.

Just understood.

I set my phone facedown and opened the first binder.

By seven, the office was half empty. By nine, only the cleaning crew and the overnight security team remained. At eleven, my eyes burned so badly I had to wash my face in the restroom. I found a duplicate risk file that would have wrecked the Germany forecast if I had run the software without checking it.

At 12:40 a.m., I sent Vanessa a short email documenting the cleaned files and attached the preliminary audit notes. I had learned to leave a paper trail around her.

At 1:13 a.m., the last model finished processing.

I saved everything twice, locked the binders in my drawer, and took a cab home.

The penthouse was dark except for one lamp in the living room.

Adrian sat on the leather sofa in shirtsleeves, a tablet balanced on one knee and a glass of scotch on the table.

He did not look up when I came in.

"It's past one."

"I know." I dropped my bag onto a chair. "The files were worse than I expected. Someone duplicated two data sets and mislabeled the tariff assumptions."

He finally looked at me.

I was still wearing my office clothes. My hair had fallen out of its clip. I had missed our anniversary dinner because his vice president had buried me in work.

His expression held irritation, not concern.

"You bring too much work stress home, Emma."

I stared at him.

"My work stress?"

"You let people walk over you, then come home upset about it." He picked up his glass. "You need to learn to say no."

For one second, I thought I had misheard him.

"Say no to Vanessa?"

"Set boundaries."

A laugh almost escaped me, but there was nothing funny in it.

Vanessa had absolute authority over my department because Adrian had given it to her. He praised her "aggressive leadership" at every executive meeting. He was also the reason I could not remind her that firing me would create a legal and personal mess for the CEO.

At work, we are nothing to each other.

That had been Adrian's rule from the beginning.

"You know why I can't push her the way other people can," I said.

His jaw tightened. "Don't turn this into the marriage issue again."

"It is the marriage issue."

"No. It's your inability to separate your professional life from your personal one."

I looked at him for a long moment.

"Do you know what day it is?"

Silence.

His eyes flicked toward the clock.

That was answer enough.

"Emma—"

"Don't."

He rubbed a hand over his face. "I had a brutal day too. We can reschedule dinner."

"It wasn't about dinner."

He exhaled, already impatient again. "I have an early meeting. I'm going to bed. Try not to make noise when you come in."

He walked down the hall.

I stayed in the living room, looking at the two untouched anniversary gifts I had left on the side table that morning. One was for him. One was a small framed photo from our courthouse wedding, still wrapped in brown paper because I had wanted us to open it together.

I picked up my gift to him, carried it into the study, and put it in the bottom drawer.

Then I removed my wedding ring.

At the office, I wore it on a thin chain beneath my blouse. At home, I usually slipped it back onto my finger the moment I walked through the door.

Tonight, I left it on the bathroom counter while I washed off my makeup.

When I finally got into bed, Adrian was already asleep with his back to me.

I lay awake on my side, staring at the dark wall.

For three years, I had told myself secrecy protected our marriage.

For the first time, another possibility felt more honest.

Maybe Adrian wasn't protecting our marriage from Northstar.

Maybe he was protecting Northstar from ever having to acknowledge me.
