Starved by My Mother The Sister She Chose Over Me Summary

My mother controlled my college life by restricting me to an $800 meal card, leaving me with zero cash. She claimed money corrupts students, forcing me to trade dining hall milk just to buy medicine. But everything shattered when I saw her WhatsApp transfers to my sister, Patricia. While I was berated for days over a hundred dollars for fruit, Patricia received over three thousand dollars for dresses and entertainment. Chapter 1 of Starved by My Mother The Sister She Chose Over Me

After I started college, my mother only ever loaded money onto my campus meal card. Beyond that, I didn't have a single dollar in cash.

"Students just need to eat," she'd said. "Give them money and they'll go down the wrong path."

So I had no social life, no entertainment. When I got sick and needed medicine, I had to trade cartons of milk from the dining hall to get cash from classmates.

I thought she was just afraid I'd waste money. Then I saw the WhatsApp transfer records on my sister's phone.

"Baby, here's money for that dress."

"Here's for karaoke with your friends."

"Here's for an Uber—don't tire yourself out."

In a single month, the transfers added up to over three thousand dollars.

Meanwhile, last month, I'd asked her to add a hundred dollars to my card so I could buy fruit. She berated me for three days straight.

I held my sister's phone, screenshotted that long, damning trail of transfers, and forwarded every last one to our family group chat.

Then I tagged everyone: "Mom, didn't you say students with money go bad? So how come Patricia gets $3,000 in cash every month while I only get an $800 meal card?"

...

Not a single person replied. But my heart was hammering so hard I could feel it in my throat.

Fear. The sharp thrill of retaliation. And underneath it all, a fragile, stubborn thread of hope.

Even now, I was still hoping my mother would give me an explanation. Even a lie would have been enough.

Three seconds later, she sent me a private message. Three back-to-back voice notes, each one a scream.

"Clementine Fox! Have you lost your mind?! Delete those right now!"

"You don't air dirty laundry in public—don't you know that? Why would you post your sister's private information in the group chat? Are you trying to destroy her?!"

"I'm counting to three. If you don't delete them, don't ever expect me to take care of you again!"

I tapped play on the voice notes. The shrill sound pierced through my speaker. My hands were shaking, but I typed my reply anyway:

"It's been over two minutes. I can't delete them anymore."

That one sentence detonated the bomb.

The phone rang instantly.

"You ungrateful little snake! You think you're something now, huh? Posting screenshots to interrogate your own mother? Who gave you the nerve?!"

I bit down hard on my lip, forcing back tears, and demanded an answer.

"Why? Mom, I just want to know why. Last month I begged you for a hundred dollars to buy fruit. You said times were tough. You called me vain. You tore me apart."

"But Patricia? She drops three thousand on a dress without blinking! How is that 'tough times'?"

On the other end of the line, my mother's voice faltered for a fraction of a second.

"Your sister is an art student! She's going to be a great artist someday! You think her world doesn't require networking? Doesn't require presentation? If she shows up to school looking like a mess, her classmates will look down on her!"

"You think you're the same as her? You're at some ordinary college burying your nose in textbooks. As long as your meal card keeps you fed, what do you need cash for? To spend on some boyfriend?!"

My whole body went cold. The blood in my veins turned to ice.

I screamed into the phone.

"Am I even your daughter?! I'm a person too! I need a social life! I need to buy pads, I need to buy medicine! Do you know that last time I had a fever, I had to just suffer through it because I couldn't afford a single pill?!"

"And where were you? You were sending Patricia money to go to karaoke!"

"Enough!"

My mother cut me off, her voice thick with disgust. "Stop playing the victim! You got over that fever, didn't you? Didn't fry your brain, did it? The way I see it, you're just jealous of your sister. You can't stand watching her live well!"

"Let me tell you something, Clementine. Your sister is delicate. She has high standards. She can't handle hardship. You're tough. You can take a little suffering. Suffering builds character!"

Then the line went dead.
