Chapter 5
Aria’s blood ran cold as his words sank in. Her life had been a series of betrayals and lies, and now, this revelation threatened to upend everything she had ever known.
Kael’s expression remained impassive, but his eyes betrayed a flicker of something—concern, perhaps. “You seek to exploit her bloodline for your own gain,” he accused.
Draven shrugged. “Perhaps. But power is the currency of our kind, and I intend to claim what is mine.”
Aria felt a surge of anger. Her hands immediately curled into fists. “I am not a prize to be fought over. I refuse to be a pawn in your games.”
Draven’s gaze turned cold. “You may not have a choice, girl. The Trial of Blood is a binding rite. If I win, you will belong to me.”
Kael’s growl was low and threatening. His wolf was just beneath the surface. “You will not win, Draven. I will make sure of that.”
Without another word, Kael shifted. His body contorted and transformed into his massive wolf form. The crowd gasped in awe at the sight of their Alpha’s sheer power. His dark fur was bristling with anticipation. Draven followed suit. His own transformation was marked by a snarl and a flash of fangs.
The two wolves circled each other, growling and snapping, each waiting for the other to make the first move. Aria watched in horror and fascination. Her heart pounded as the battle began. Kael struck first, a blur of motion as he lunged at Draven, fangs bared and claws extended.
The fight was brutal, a clash of titans that shook the ground beneath them. Blood and fur flew as they tore into each other, each determined to emerge victorious. Aria’s breath came in short, ragged gasps as she watched, unable to look away.
But as the battle raged on, a gnawing fear settled in her gut. Kael was strong, but Draven fought with a ferocity born of desperation. The outcome was far from certain. And with each passing moment, the scales seemed to tip further out of Kael’s favor.
Just when it seemed that Draven might gain the upper hand, Kael unleashed a powerful strike that sent the rogue Alpha crashing to the ground. The crowd erupted in cheers. But Aria’s relief was short-lived. Draven wasn’t down for long. He rose with a snarl and his eyes were burning with rage.
With a final, desperate surge of strength, Draven lunged at Kael, aiming for his throat. Aria’s scream caught in her throat as she watched the two wolves collide. Their bodies were a blur of motion. The impact was so fierce that it sent them both crashing into the arena’s stone wall.
And then, there was silence.
Aria’s heart pounded in her chest as she stared at the motionless forms of the two wolves. The air was thick with the scent of blood. And the crowd was eerily quiet, waiting to see who would rise victorious.
Slowly, Kael began to stir. His movements were labored but determined. He pushed himself to his feet. His body was already battered and bleeding but still standing. Draven, however, remained still. His body was broken and lifeless.
Kael let out a victorious howl. The sound echoed through the arena. The crowd erupted in cheers. Their voices were a thunderous roar that shook the very ground beneath them. Aria watched in awe as Kael shifted back into his human form.
But as Kael turned to face her, his expression softened. And for a brief moment, Aria saw something in his eyes that gave her pause—an emotion she couldn’t quite name, but one that made her heart skip a beat.
Kael’s voice was low, but it carried a weight that sent a shiver down Aria’s spine. “This is only the beginning, Aria. The trial may be over, but the true battle has only just begun.”
Chapter 6
The aftermath of the Trial of Blood left the Bloodthorn Pack in a tense silence. The once bustling arena was now filled with whispers. The pack members casted wary glances at Aria as she stood near Kael. Her thoughts were like a whirlwind of confusion.
Kael, though victorious, was visibly exhausted. His body bore the marks of the fierce battle, blood staining his clothes as he stood tall, commanding respect despite his wounds. But his gaze remained on Aria. A mixture of curiosity and something was deeper in his eyes, an emotion that tugged at her in ways she couldn't yet understand.
"Are you hurt?" Kael's voice was low, barely above a whisper, as he took a step closer to her.
Aria shook her head, still reeling from the intensity of the trial. "No, I'm fine," she replied. Her voice was steadier than she felt. But her mind was far from calm. Draven’s words echoed in her head. The revelation of her true lineage was unsettling her to the core.
Kael studied her for a moment longer. "You did well to stand your ground," he said, surprising her with the unexpected praise. "But this isn’t over. Draven was only the beginning."
Aria swallowed hard. And her heart raced as she processed the implications of his words. "What did he mean?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly. "About my bloodline?"
Kael’s expression darkened, a shadow passing over his features. "We’ll discuss this later," he said. His tone left no room for argument. "For now, you need to rest. There’s much to prepare for."
Aria frowned, frustration bubbling up inside her. She had so many questions, but it was clear that Kael was not in the mood to answer them—at least, not yet. But she couldn’t shake the feeling that whatever truths were being kept from her would only lead to more danger, more conflict.
“Fine,” she conceded, though the resolve in her voice was unmistakable. “But you owe me answers, Kael.”
He nodded, acknowledging her demand. “And you’ll get them. In time.”
Kael motioned for two pack members to escort her back to her quarters, but Aria hesitated. Her eyes lingered on the spot where Draven had fallen. His body had already been removed. But the memory of the battle lingered. It was like a sharp reminder of the dangers that surrounded her.
As she turned to leave, a hand caught her arm. And when she spun around, she saw Selene, Kael’s sister and a respected member of the pack. Selene’s eyes were kind. But there was an undeniable strength behind them, a strength that Aria found both comforting and intimidating.
“Come with me,” Selene said softly, leading Aria away from the crowd. “There’s something I need to tell you.”
