Chapter 4
“What do you think you’re doing, Amara?”
The voice cut through the tension like a blade. I didn’t turn around. I couldn’t. Not yet. I needed to focus. The files were right there, lying in front of me on Lorenzo’s polished mahogany desk. A treasure trove of secrets, the key to the vengeance I’d been craving.
My fingers brushed against the edges of the papers, the cool texture sending a chill through my body. I could almost hear the rhythmic beating of my heart, syncing with the pulse of this moment—one wrong move, and I’d lose it all.
“Amara.” His voice was quieter this time, a growl. “I asked you a question.”
My breath hitched. He knew. He must have known.
I took a step back, straightening up. There was no point pretending anymore. He’d caught me. I could hear his steps behind me, slow and deliberate.
“What are you doing here? What do you want from me?”
The words were like a punch to the gut, and yet I couldn’t bring myself to feel guilty. No, this wasn’t about guilt. It never would be again.
He moved closer, his shadow looming over me. The air between us grew heavier, charged with something I couldn’t quite place—something dark.
"I thought you'd be smarter than this," Lorenzo murmured.
“You thought wrong.”
I turned to face him, my posture cold and unyielding, though I could feel the rawness inside me, the desire to claw my way out of this.
But then, his gaze softened, just for a second. It was as if something in me broke his control, if only for a moment. He wasn’t used to this, I could tell. He wasn’t used to someone like me.
“Tell me... who are you really, Amara?”
There it was again. That question. The one I’d been dreading, and yet, oddly, the one I couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief at. He was starting to peel back the layers, to understand that I was no longer the girl he thought he knew.
My mouth went dry. This wasn’t just about stealing documents anymore. This was something deeper. Something far more dangerous.
“I’m the one who will end you.”
The words were out before I could stop them. And the way he stared at me... it was almost like he was... impressed.
His lips quirked up, just slightly, but it was enough to make me wonder if I had miscalculated. Was he actually intrigued by me?
No. He couldn’t be. I wasn’t the woman he thought he could tame with charm and power. I was something else. Something far darker.
And just when I thought he would say something, maybe even taunt me, a sound caught his attention.
A giggle. High-pitched. Innocent.
My stomach twisted in an unexpected way, and I turned to see a little girl standing in the doorway. Her small face was lit with curiosity, her big brown eyes looking up at Lorenzo.
“Uncle Lorenzo?”
The name hit me like a hammer, and for a split second, my heart skipped. This was the soft side of him—the side I never wanted to see.
Lorenzo’s gaze softened completely as he looked down at the child, his stern features melting into something I hadn’t expected. He kneeled down in front of her, his voice gentle, his eyes full of warmth.
“What are you doing here, sweetie? I thought I told you to stay with Aunt Selena?”
The little girl pouted, her hands clutching a stuffed bunny.
“But I wanted to see you, Uncle. I missed you.”
He smiled—genuine, effortless. The way he looked at her made something inside me stir uncomfortably, a feeling I hadn’t expected to have.
For a brief moment, I felt the heat of anger rise in me, not at him, but at myself. How could I let myself be moved by this? By him? By the tenderness he had for someone else?
I had to remember why I was here. What I had to do.
“I need to go,” I muttered, my voice cold and distant.
But Lorenzo wasn’t done. His gaze, still locked on the girl, flickered toward me with something unreadable in his eyes.
“Are you sure you want to leave?”
The words were simple, but the way he said them made my skin prickle. He knew I was about to take something that belonged to him. And yet, something about the way he spoke felt almost... threatening.
My pulse quickened, but I wasn’t going to back down. Not now.
“I’m sure,” I replied, turning on my heel and walking toward the door.
But just as I reached the threshold, I felt his hand grip my arm. His touch was firm, the heat of his fingers searing through my sleeve.
“You’re not going anywhere.”
The words were low, dangerous.
I could feel the power shift in the room, his presence now an undeniable force.
And then I realized—this wasn’t just about stolen files anymore. This was about him seeing me as a threat. Something that needed to be controlled.
My heart pounded in my chest. I had expected resistance, but I hadn’t anticipated this—the force of his will, the depth of his control.
I met his gaze, my voice steady despite the storm raging inside me.
“Then you’ll have to stop me.”
Chapter 5
"I don't think I've ever had such an intriguing guest before."
Lorenzo’s voice slithered through the air, smooth and inviting, yet laced with an undertone I couldn't ignore. The clink of cutlery and soft murmurs from the other tables around us only made the tension between us more palpable.
We were seated in a private dining room, the low light casting shadows that seemed to stretch between us like invisible chains. My heart thudded in my chest, every beat a reminder of why I was here—why I couldn't afford to falter now.
"How flattering. But I doubt I'm your most interesting guest tonight."
His lips twitched at my words, but his eyes remained sharp, calculating. His fingers toyed with his wine glass, swirling the red liquid with an almost methodical precision.
I had to be careful. There was more to him than the suave exterior—the man who always had control, who prided himself on never letting anyone in. But I wasn’t here to be just another conquest. I had my own game to play.
The silence between us was almost suffocating now. He was waiting for me to make the first move, to reveal something, anything, that would give him more insight into who I really was. But I wouldn't give him that satisfaction. Not yet.
"Tell me, Amara," Lorenzo leaned in slightly, his gaze intense, "What is it you truly want?"
The question lingered, hanging in the air like a challenge. It was too easy to answer. Too simple. He wanted to know if I was here to play his game, if I was willing to dance on his terms. But I wasn’t. Not this time.
"I want... what’s mine," I said, my voice steady despite the sharp twist of anticipation coiling in my stomach.
His expression remained unreadable, but something flickered behind his eyes—a shift, as if he was seeing me in a new light. I could feel it, like a pulse running through the air between us. The predator now had his prey cornered. But I was no prey.
The waiter approached, setting down our meals with a polite smile. The clinking of plates and the soft rustling of napkins were the only sounds for a moment, but they did nothing to calm the storm in my chest.
"What do you think of this place?" Lorenzo asked as he cut into his steak. The question seemed casual, but there was a sharpness to it, a probing note buried beneath the surface.
I looked around, taking in the luxurious surroundings—the candlelit tables, the polished marble floors, the plush velvet chairs. Everything screamed power, wealth, and control.
It felt like I was inside a trap, the walls closing in ever so slowly.
"It’s very... fitting," I replied, offering a smile that didn’t quite reach my eyes.
He studied me for a long moment, his gaze unwavering, before he continued eating. He was still waiting for me to crack, to show the real Amara underneath the cool exterior. But he was wrong if he thought he could manipulate me so easily.
I could feel the game shifting. He was probing, testing my limits, trying to see if I would reveal anything that would make him feel in control again. But this time, I wasn’t going to let him.
"I’ve been thinking," Lorenzo said after a long pause, his voice softer now, almost contemplative. "You remind me of someone I used to know. Someone... dangerous."
My fork froze halfway to my mouth, the words sinking into me like daggers. I knew exactly who he was talking about. Alicia.
The name, even in thought, made my chest tighten, a knot of pain swirling in my stomach. He was right. I wasn’t like the women he was used to. I wasn’t some docile creature he could control with charm or threats.
But Alicia—she had been something else. Strong. Fearless. And in some sick, twisted way, I could feel the echo of her life in mine. The same hunger, the same thirst for revenge.
"Dangerous, am I?" I said, voice smooth, the words slipping from my lips with ease. "Perhaps. But I think you enjoy the danger. Just like you enjoy pretending to be the one in control."
He didn’t answer right away. Instead, his lips curled into a smirk that didn’t reach his eyes.
My heart pounded as I realized what I had just done. I had pushed him—pulled him into my world, into a dance of manipulation and seduction. The dangerous game we were playing had just become something much more complex.
For a brief second, his gaze softened, but it was gone before I could make sense of it.
"I like your fire," he murmured, eyes narrowing with something that could have been admiration—or something more dangerous.
I didn’t flinch. I wouldn’t.
The evening stretched on, each word, each glance, a carefully orchestrated move. But nothing could have prepared me for what happened next.
Without warning, Lorenzo stood up from his seat and approached me, his movement swift and fluid.
"You think you have control," he whispered, just inches from my ear, his breath hot against my skin. "But you have no idea what you're dealing with."
His lips brushed mine, soft and dangerous. The kiss was a shock to my senses, a jolt of heat that made my head spin.
My heart was racing, the world around us dissolving into a blur of sound and light. But all I could focus on was him—his hands, his lips, his power.
When he pulled back, I was left breathless, my mind reeling, my body frozen in place.
Lorenzo smirked, his eyes gleaming with something unreadable.
"You’re not going anywhere, Amara."
Chapter 6
"What do you think you're doing here?"
I froze. His voice, low and cold, sliced through the air, shattering the fragile tension that had been building inside me. My heart pounded in my chest as I turned, my breath catching in my throat.
Lorenzo stood in the doorway, his silhouette framed by the dim light from the hallway. His eyes were sharp, calculating—yet there was something darker beneath the surface. A storm brewing that I couldn’t quite decipher.
How had he found me? I couldn’t afford to make a mistake now. Not after everything I had uncovered.
"I—I was just looking for something," I stammered, my voice far too weak for the lie I was trying to sell.
His lips curled into a smirk. "What? Looking for evidence of your precious little vendetta?"
I swallowed hard. He had to know. There was no way he wouldn’t have figured out by now that I was after the truth. But it didn't matter. I had already come this far.
The thick papers in my hands seemed to burn against my skin. They were the key to everything. The proof that Lorenzo, the man I’d thought was nothing but a villain, might have been playing a game of survival all along.
"You think this will change anything?" Lorenzo took a slow step toward me, his eyes never leaving mine. "You think you’ve found the truth?"
His words rang in my ears, a taunt. I wanted to hurl the papers at him. But I knew I couldn’t. Not yet.
"You were never meant to find this," he continued, voice lowering to a dangerous whisper. "Not this... not anything about Alicia. Not my family."
Alicia. The name that had haunted me for days, filling my thoughts with confusion, anger, and longing. It was clear now that the connection between her and Lorenzo ran deeper than I’d ever imagined.
My gaze fell to the papers once more. There it was, in black and white—the truth that would unravel everything I thought I knew about this man.
Lorenzo's family had orchestrated everything. The marriage, the betrayal—everything had been a trap, a strategy to ensnare him, to tie him down to a life he hadn’t chosen. He had never wanted Alicia. He had never wanted any of this.
And yet, there he was, the man who I had once seen as nothing but an enemy, suddenly a victim.
The realization hit me like a wave. The truth was far more complicated than I had ever anticipated. Lorenzo wasn’t the villain. His family was.
"So you really were trying to protect me," I whispered, barely able to hear the words myself.
I hadn’t meant to say it out loud, but the truth had spilled from my lips before I could stop it. His expression flickered—surprise, maybe even a hint of regret—but it was gone so quickly I couldn’t be sure.
The silence stretched between us, thick and uncomfortable. I had to make a decision. Was he a pawn in his family’s game? Or was he still the monster I had believed him to be?
The papers in my hands seemed to mock me now, reminding me of my own thirst for revenge, my desire to tear him down. Could I still do that now that I knew the truth?
"What will you do with that information, Amara?" His voice was low, almost amused, as if daring me to take the next step.
His gaze burned into me, challenging me to make the choice that would define everything.
I felt a shift in the air. The coldness between us now felt different—he wasn’t the predator anymore.
But even as the truth sank in, doubt gnawed at me. Was this a game? Was I just a pawn in another scheme, or had Lorenzo truly been trying to protect me all along?
"Do you think this changes anything?" I asked, forcing the words out, my heart pounding in my chest. "Do you really think you’ve won?"
His smirk deepened, but there was something different now. A flicker of something softer in his eyes.
"I haven’t won yet, Amara," he said, voice low and dangerous. "But neither have you."
His words hit me harder than I expected. I had walked into this confrontation with one purpose: to take him down. To punish him for his betrayal. But now...
Now, I wasn’t sure where the line between enemy and ally was anymore.
Lorenzo stepped closer, and I instinctively took a step back, my mind racing. This wasn’t the time for weakness. But the confusion was overwhelming. What was I supposed to do with this new information?
"You’re not the only one who’s been used, Amara," he continued, his voice surprisingly soft now. "You think you’ve suffered? I’ve been living a lie my entire life."
The vulnerability in his words caught me off guard, and I couldn’t help but flinch.
Was I seeing him for the first time? Really seeing him? Or was this just another manipulation?
The room seemed to close in on me as I faced my dilemma. The documents were in my hands—irrefutable evidence of Lorenzo’s betrayal. But was it really his fault?
"I don't know what to believe anymore," I whispered, the weight of the decision pressing on me.
And for the first time, Lorenzo seemed genuinely conflicted. His eyes softened, but his jaw tightened, as if fighting something inside him.
I could feel the shift in the air, the tension between us thick and tangled. The path ahead of me was unclear, shrouded in shadows I couldn’t navigate alone.
And then, just as quickly as it had begun, he turned away, his back to me as he walked toward the desk.
"You can’t save me, Amara," he said quietly, almost to himself. "Not anymore."
The words echoed in the silence, and I stood frozen in the doorway, the truth hanging heavy in my hands.
Was he a victim or a villain? The answer wasn’t as simple as I’d hoped.
