Chapter 2

The cold sting of damp concrete beneath me was the first sensation I registered. My head throbbed with the rhythmic pulse of betrayal, and the sickly sweet smell of damp wood and gasoline churned my stomach.

A faint, flickering bulb overhead cast uneven shadows in the small, suffocating room. I was in a warehouse—somewhere isolated, far removed from the gilded façade of the life I thought I knew.

When I tried to move, my wrists burned—rope. Tight and unyielding, it kept me tethered to a chair bolted to the ground. My heart raced as reality settled in.

"You’re awake," Lorenzo’s voice cut through the silence like a blade.

My gaze shot toward him. He stood in the doorway, his tailored suit at odds with the dingy room. The man I once trusted, the man I thought loved me, leaned casually against the doorframe, his posture coldly relaxed.

"Why, Lorenzo?" My voice cracked, raw from the icy plunge and the weight of betrayal.

He walked closer, his polished shoes clicking against the floor. "You should be thanking me," he said, his tone maddeningly calm. "I gave you a chance to live in luxury, Alicia. All you had to do was smile and play your part."

I bit back the retort rising in my throat, my chest heaving with a mixture of rage and disbelief. "Is this what you call love?"

His laugh was sharp, hollow. "Love? That’s such a quaint notion. This isn’t about love. This is about survival. Power. Legacy." He crouched before me, his dark eyes boring into mine. "Your family’s legacy."

A chill skated down my spine. "What do you mean?"

Before he could answer, the door creaked open, and Selena sauntered in, her red lips curved in a triumphant smile.

"Ah, our sleeping beauty is finally awake," she drawled, her voice dripping with mockery.

I glared at her, every ounce of my hatred reflected in my gaze. "Don’t think for a second you’ve won."

Selena’s laugh was cruel and guttural. "Won? Sweetheart, I’ve already won. You just haven’t accepted it yet."

My stomach churned as they exchanged a glance, a silent conversation I wasn’t privy to but understood all too well.

Lorenzo straightened, his expression hardening. "Here’s how this will go, Alicia. You’re going to sign over the Moretti estate, every last piece of it. The properties, the businesses—everything your family built."

My breath caught in my throat. "You’re insane. My father—"

"Your father is in no position to bargain," Lorenzo interrupted, his voice laced with venom. "Do you think we’ve been idle while you’ve been... resting?" He reached into his pocket and pulled out a phone, holding it up to me.

The screen displayed a live feed of my family’s villa. Men in dark suits patrolled the grounds, and I recognized them instantly—not Moretti guards, but the hired muscle of the rival Castellano family.

"You son of a—"

"Careful," Lorenzo said, his voice a low warning. "Your next words might be your last."

Selena stepped closer, her heels clicking sharply against the floor. She crouched beside me, her perfume overpowering and nauseating. "Do you really think Lorenzo would marry you for anything but strategy? A pawn, darling. That’s all you’ve ever been."

I snapped my head toward Lorenzo. "You’re working with the Castellanos? You’d betray your own bloodline for them?"

"My bloodline is weak," he spat, his face inches from mine. "Your father’s empire is crumbling, Alicia. I’m ensuring my survival—and yours, if you cooperate."

Selena let out a soft laugh, brushing a lock of hair from my face with mock tenderness. "But if you don’t..."

I twisted against the ropes, my fury rising with each word. "And what happens after you bleed my family dry, Lorenzo? Do you really think they’ll let you live?"

His expression darkened, a flicker of doubt crossing his features before Selena’s hand rested on his arm, steadying him.

"Enough of this," she said smoothly. "Alicia has two choices. Sign everything over, or..." She tilted her head toward Lorenzo.

"Or what?" I demanded, my voice shaking but defiant.

Lorenzo’s jaw tightened as he pulled a gun from inside his jacket, the cold metal gleaming under the dim light. "Or you disappear."

My blood ran cold.

"Your family will mourn you as a tragic accident," Selena said with a mock pout. "A beautiful wife gone too soon, drowning in her own foolishness. How poetic."

I forced a bitter laugh, my voice sharp. "You won’t get away with this. The Moretti name—"

"Means nothing without you," Lorenzo cut me off. "Face it, Alicia. You’re the last thread holding your family together. When you’re gone, everything unravels."

"Go to hell," I spat.

His face hardened. "You leave me no choice."

He raised the gun, and my heart thundered in my chest.

Selena leaned in close, whispering, "Goodbye, Alicia."

The sound of the gun cocking was deafening. My breath caught as the door burst open, a shadowed figure stepping into the room.

"Wait."

It was a voice I didn’t recognize—low, commanding, and ice-cold.

Lorenzo froze, his finger hovering over the trigger. "Who the hell—"

"You’ll regret it," the man said, his silhouette imposing under the harsh light.

Selena’s confident smirk faltered, replaced by a flicker of fear.

But Lorenzo’s grip on the gun tightened. "Stay out of this, or—"

The man stepped forward, his face still shrouded in shadow. "Or what? Pull the trigger, and see what happens next."

The tension in the room thickened, suffocating.

Before I could process what was happening, the man turned his head slightly, his next words chilling me to the core.

"Kill her."

The order wasn’t meant for Lorenzo.

A flash of movement. A deafening bang.

And then, silence.

Chapter 3

"Open your eyes. Slowly."

The voice was calm, but there was an edge to it, like a blade cutting through the fog in my brain. I tried to focus, my eyelids fluttering open, but everything felt foreign.

The air was sterile, sharp with the smell of metal and chemicals, and the low hum of machinery vibrated beneath my skin. The world came into focus slowly, the blurred outlines of steel walls and medical equipment coming into view.

A figure stood over me—tall, imposing, his face shrouded in shadow. His silhouette was sharp, like a silhouette cut from the very darkness around us.

"Good. You're awake," he said, his voice flat, distant. No warmth, no relief.

I blinked, my throat dry as sandpaper. "Where... where am I?" My voice was ragged, a reflection of the confusion roiling inside me.

He raised an eyebrow, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips, as though the question was beneath him. "You're safe. For now. That's all you need to know."

Safe. The word felt hollow, like a joke. I tried to sit up, but a wave of pain crashed over me, my body screaming in protest. My arms and torso felt strangely tight, bandaged, as if something had been done to me—something I couldn't quite place yet.

"Don’t move," he commanded, his tone sharp, unwavering. "Your body’s still adjusting."

Adjusting. Panic surged through me, my heartbeat quickening. What had they done? I tried to lift my hand, but the ache in my limbs made it feel like I was dragging them through cement.

“What did you do to me?” I rasped, my voice breaking with the effort.

"Saved your life," the man replied, his tone devoid of emotion. "Or what was left of it."

I caught a flash of movement—his hand, gripping a syringe, the needle catching the light. He turned, his back to me now, reaching for a tray of instruments. Every motion was precise, controlled.

"Who are you?" I demanded, my voice now firmer, though my body still rebelled against me.

He didn’t even look up as he answered. "Rafael. Dr. Rafael Moreau."

More questions came, but before I could speak, the door behind him slid open, and two figures entered the room.

A woman, her green eyes sharp like a predator’s, and a wiry man with a scar running down his cheek. They both seemed out of place, like characters in a story I didn’t understand.

"Is she ready?" the woman asked, her voice clipped and commanding.

"Not yet," Rafael replied, his eyes still on the needle, his hands moving with unnerving calm.

The man with the scar scoffed, his gaze scanning me with obvious disdain. "She doesn’t look like much."

"Looks are deceiving," Rafael said, the faintest hint of annoyance slipping into his voice.

My fists clenched, despite the weak state of my body. I could feel the anger rising inside me, mixing with the panic, twisting into something sharper, darker.

"What is this?" I managed, my voice stronger now, though a tremor still lingered beneath. "Some kind of experiment?"

The woman gave a slow, almost predatory smile, folding her arms across her chest. "Experiment? No, sweetheart. This is revenge."

Revenge. The word hit me like a slap. Cold. Final.

Rafael’s gaze softened for just a moment, as if studying me. "You’ve been wronged, haven’t you? By someone you trusted. Someone you loved."

Images flashed in my mind—Lorenzo’s cruel eyes, Selena’s mocking laughter, the press of a cold gun against my temple. My breath quickened, my chest tightening as the memories assaulted me.

"What do you want from me?" I asked, though I knew the answer already.

The woman stepped forward, her eyes glinting with something dangerous, something unreadable. "It’s not what we want from you, Alicia. It’s what we can offer you."

Rafael turned then, his expression unreadable, and held up a vial filled with a faintly glowing liquid. I stared at it, the sight sending a chill down my spine.

"This," he said reverently, his voice almost low. "This is a serum designed to enhance your strength, your speed, your reflexes. It will make you unstoppable."

I swallowed hard, my throat dry again. "Why me?" The question was out before I could stop it, and I already regretted it. What was I, but a broken pawn to them?

The scarred man chuckled, the sound bitter, hollow. "Because you’re expendable. And angry. That’s all it takes."

Rafael shot him a sharp look, then returned his focus to me. "Think of this as a second chance," he said, his tone almost coaxing. "A chance to reclaim what was stolen from you. A chance to make them pay."

The temptation hit me like a weight, sinking deep into my chest. Power. Vengeance. The chance to tear it all down, to make them all pay. I could almost taste it, the dark allure of revenge coursing through my veins.

"And if I refuse?" My voice was barely a whisper, but it held the weight of my doubt, my fear.

The woman’s lips curled into a cruel smile. "Then you leave as you are. Broken. Powerless. Hunted. Lorenzo won’t let you walk away."

The choice felt like a heavy stone in my gut. Power, vengeance, and survival—or nothing at all. My hands trembled at the thought.

Rafael held out a mirror. "Before you decide," he said, his tone unreadable, "look at yourself."

I took the mirror from him, the cold glass slipping into my hand, and braced myself. I expected to see the battered, familiar face of the girl who had once been—Alicia, the woman betrayed, the woman with nothing left.

But when I looked, the face staring back at me was a stranger. High cheekbones. Sharp, unfamiliar features. Eyes that burned with a coldness I didn’t recognize.

My heart skipped a beat as I traced the contours of this new face, my fingers trembling. "What… what have you done?"

"We gave you a new identity," Rafael said, his voice almost casual. "Amara Villanueva."

Amara Villanueva.

The name hung in the air, foreign and cold. The weight of it crushed down on me, a new life grafted onto a body that wasn’t mine.

I gripped the mirror tighter, my reflection staring back at me with a mixture of fear and something darker. Fury. A thirst for revenge.

"What do you need me to do?" The words left my mouth before I could stop them, urgency twisting my insides.

Rafael smiled faintly, a cold, calculating smile that sent a shiver down my spine. "We’ll start with training," he said. "And when the time comes..."

He leaned closer, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

"You’ll burn Lorenzo’s world to the ground."

I stared at him, my heart pounding in my chest. A part of me wanted to resist, to reject this nightmare. But another part—the part that burned with the desire for vengeance—welcomed the promise.

In the reflection of the mirror, my new face twisted into a cold smile.

Chapter 4

“What do you think you’re doing, Amara?”

The voice cut through the tension like a blade. I didn’t turn around. I couldn’t. Not yet. I needed to focus. The files were right there, lying in front of me on Lorenzo’s polished mahogany desk. A treasure trove of secrets, the key to the vengeance I’d been craving.

My fingers brushed against the edges of the papers, the cool texture sending a chill through my body. I could almost hear the rhythmic beating of my heart, syncing with the pulse of this moment—one wrong move, and I’d lose it all.

“Amara.” His voice was quieter this time, a growl. “I asked you a question.”

My breath hitched. He knew. He must have known.

I took a step back, straightening up. There was no point pretending anymore. He’d caught me. I could hear his steps behind me, slow and deliberate.

“What are you doing here? What do you want from me?”

The words were like a punch to the gut, and yet I couldn’t bring myself to feel guilty. No, this wasn’t about guilt. It never would be again.

He moved closer, his shadow looming over me. The air between us grew heavier, charged with something I couldn’t quite place—something dark.

"I thought you'd be smarter than this," Lorenzo murmured.

“You thought wrong.”

I turned to face him, my posture cold and unyielding, though I could feel the rawness inside me, the desire to claw my way out of this.

But then, his gaze softened, just for a second. It was as if something in me broke his control, if only for a moment. He wasn’t used to this, I could tell. He wasn’t used to someone like me.

“Tell me... who are you really, Amara?”

There it was again. That question. The one I’d been dreading, and yet, oddly, the one I couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief at. He was starting to peel back the layers, to understand that I was no longer the girl he thought he knew.

My mouth went dry. This wasn’t just about stealing documents anymore. This was something deeper. Something far more dangerous.

“I’m the one who will end you.”

The words were out before I could stop them. And the way he stared at me... it was almost like he was... impressed.

His lips quirked up, just slightly, but it was enough to make me wonder if I had miscalculated. Was he actually intrigued by me?

No. He couldn’t be. I wasn’t the woman he thought he could tame with charm and power. I was something else. Something far darker.

And just when I thought he would say something, maybe even taunt me, a sound caught his attention.

A giggle. High-pitched. Innocent.

My stomach twisted in an unexpected way, and I turned to see a little girl standing in the doorway. Her small face was lit with curiosity, her big brown eyes looking up at Lorenzo.

“Uncle Lorenzo?”

The name hit me like a hammer, and for a split second, my heart skipped. This was the soft side of him—the side I never wanted to see.

Lorenzo’s gaze softened completely as he looked down at the child, his stern features melting into something I hadn’t expected. He kneeled down in front of her, his voice gentle, his eyes full of warmth.

“What are you doing here, sweetie? I thought I told you to stay with Aunt Selena?”

The little girl pouted, her hands clutching a stuffed bunny.

“But I wanted to see you, Uncle. I missed you.”

He smiled—genuine, effortless. The way he looked at her made something inside me stir uncomfortably, a feeling I hadn’t expected to have.

For a brief moment, I felt the heat of anger rise in me, not at him, but at myself. How could I let myself be moved by this? By him? By the tenderness he had for someone else?

I had to remember why I was here. What I had to do.

“I need to go,” I muttered, my voice cold and distant.

But Lorenzo wasn’t done. His gaze, still locked on the girl, flickered toward me with something unreadable in his eyes.

“Are you sure you want to leave?”

The words were simple, but the way he said them made my skin prickle. He knew I was about to take something that belonged to him. And yet, something about the way he spoke felt almost... threatening.

My pulse quickened, but I wasn’t going to back down. Not now.

“I’m sure,” I replied, turning on my heel and walking toward the door.

But just as I reached the threshold, I felt his hand grip my arm. His touch was firm, the heat of his fingers searing through my sleeve.

“You’re not going anywhere.”

The words were low, dangerous.

I could feel the power shift in the room, his presence now an undeniable force.

And then I realized—this wasn’t just about stolen files anymore. This was about him seeing me as a threat. Something that needed to be controlled.

My heart pounded in my chest. I had expected resistance, but I hadn’t anticipated this—the force of his will, the depth of his control.

I met his gaze, my voice steady despite the storm raging inside me.

“Then you’ll have to stop me.”
