The white ceremonial dress felt like a shroud against my skin. I stood at the stone altar, surrounded by hundreds of pack members whose eyes bore into me with a mixture of anticipation and something else I couldn't quite name. Pity, maybe. Or doubt.

Twenty years. I'd waited twenty years for this moment.

The afternoon sun filtered through the ancient oaks surrounding the ceremonial grounds, casting dappled shadows across Michael's face as he stood across from me. He looked perfect in his Alpha regalia—black suit, the Hudson Pack crest gleaming at his collar. My mate. My Michael. The boy I'd raised, protected, nearly died for.

But his eyes wouldn't meet mine.

"We are gathered under the Moon Goddess's light," Elder Marcus began, his voice carrying across the silent crowd, "to witness the sacred bond between Alpha Michael Hudson and Ashley Wallace."

I tried to catch Michael's gaze, willing him to look at me, to see me the way he used to when we were younger. Before Paisley. Before everything changed. My wolf stirred restlessly inside me, whimpering.

Then I smelled it. That sickly-sweet artificial scent that had been clinging to Michael for months. Vanilla and something chemical, wrong. Paisley stood in the front row, her blonde hair perfect, her smile sharp as glass. She touched her neck—a deliberate, possessive gesture—and Michael's head turned toward her like she'd called his name.

My stomach dropped.

"Michael?" My voice came out smaller than I intended.

He finally looked at me, and what I saw in those brown eyes made my knees weak. Not love. Not even regret. Just cold, distant irritation, like I was an obligation he'd finally decided to abandon.

"I can't do this," he said.

The crowd's collective intake of breath sounded like wind through dead leaves.

"What?" I reached for him, my hand trembling. The silver bracelet his mother gave me caught the light—the promise I'd made to her before she died. *Protect him. Help him become the Alpha he's meant to be.* "Michael, please. We've waited so long—"

"I, Alpha Michael Hudson of the Hudson Pack," he said, his voice rising with that commanding Alpha tone that had always made others bow, "reject you, Ashley Wallace, as my mate."

The words hit me like a physical blow. Not just words—a severing. The mate bond that had connected us since he turned thirteen began to tear apart, and the pain was unlike anything I'd ever experienced. Worse than when the rival pack shattered my leg. Worse than any wound I'd suffered defending his right to this position.

I heard myself scream, but it sounded distant, like it came from someone else. My knees hit the stone altar, sharp pain barely registering through the agony radiating from my chest. It felt like my heart was being ripped from my body, like my soul was splitting in two.

"This bond," Michael continued, each word another knife, "has nothing to do with the Moon Goddess's will. It's a mistake. She made a mistake with us."

*No,* my wolf howled inside me. *No, no, no.*

I looked up at him through tears I couldn't stop, my vision blurring. He stood there, tall and unmoved, while I writhed at his feet. The pack watched in horrified silence. Some turned away. Others stared with sick fascination. And Paisley—Paisley smiled.

"You're... rejecting me?" I gasped. "After everything? After I saved your life? After I gave up everything—"

"I didn't ask you to save me," he said coldly. "That was your choice, Ashley. Just like this is mine."

The bond snapped completely. I felt it like a physical break, and my wolf's anguished howl filled my mind until I thought I'd go mad from it. I collapsed fully onto the stones, my body shaking, unable to breathe through the pain.

Michael stepped over me—literally stepped around my broken body on the ground—and walked toward Paisley. She slipped her arm through his, and they left together. Left me there, in my white dress on the stone floor, in front of everyone who'd ever known us.

I don't know how long I lay there. Minutes. Hours. Time lost meaning in the haze of pain.

When I finally managed to drag myself upright, the ceremonial grounds were empty. The decorations still hung from the trees, mocking me. White ribbons. Silver bells. All the trappings of a celebration that would never happen.

My leg—my bad leg—throbbed as I limped toward the pack house. Every step sent fresh waves of agony through the severed bond, like walking on broken glass. I needed to get to my room. Needed to be alone, to process, to understand how my entire world had shattered in the space of minutes.

But when I pushed open the pack house doors, I stopped.

Music. Laughter. The sounds of celebration.

I followed the noise to the main hall, each step heavier than the last. The doors were open, golden light spilling out. I stepped into the doorway and felt my remaining strength drain away.

The birthday decorations I'd glimpsed being set up this morning were gone. In their place hung new banners: "Michael & Paisley" in elegant script. Silver and blue—Hudson Pack colors—intertwined with gold. Champagne flowed. The pack mingled, laughing, toasting.

My birthday celebration had been erased.

Replaced.

Michael sat on the Alpha's throne at the head of the hall, and Paisley—Paisley sat in the Luna's chair beside him. *My* chair. The one I'd been promised since I was twelve years old. She fed him berries from a silver bowl, giggling as he caught her wrist and kissed her palm. The same palm he'd held mine with countless times when we were younger.

I must have made a sound—a whimper, a gasp—because heads turned. Pack members saw me standing in the doorway in my ruined white dress, face tear-streaked, limping. But instead of sympathy, I saw only awkwardness. Embarrassment. Averted eyes.

No one spoke to me. No one approached. They simply... looked away. Like I was already gone.

Paisley's gaze found mine across the room. She smiled—a victorious, poisonous smile—and leaned into Michael, whispering something that made him laugh. He glanced at me briefly, and in that look was nothing. No guilt. No regret. Just a vague annoyance that I was still here, intruding on *his* celebration.

"Ashley." Beta James appeared at my elbow, his voice low and uncomfortable. "Perhaps you should return to your quarters. Give everyone some space to... adjust."

*Adjust.*

I turned and walked away, my limp more pronounced now, my body shaking. Behind me, the party continued without missing a beat. Someone turned up the music.

I barely made it to the balcony before my legs gave out. I sank onto the stone railing, my fingers finding the silver bracelet Michael's mother had given me. The promise I'd kept for twenty years. The promise that had consumed my entire life.

For nothing.

"Ashley."

I didn't turn. I knew his voice. Knew his footsteps. Even now, with the bond severed and bleeding, some part of me would always know him.

"What do you want, Michael?" My voice sounded hollow.

"You need to move out of the Luna's quarters," he said, businesslike. "Paisley needs the space."

I finally looked at him. Really looked at him. When had he become this person? This cold, cruel stranger wearing the face of the boy I'd loved?

"After everything," I whispered. "After twenty years. After I nearly died defending your right to be Alpha. After I suppressed my own strength so you could shine. This is how it ends?"

He pulled something from his pocket—the ancient ceremonial necklace, the one that had belonged to his mother and her mother before her. The one that was supposed to be mine when I became Luna. Intricate silver work, embedded with moonstone. A symbol of the Hudson Pack Luna for generations.

He held it up between us, letting it catch the moonlight.

"This was never meant for you," he said.

Then he turned and hurled it into the lake below the balcony. The silver flashed once in the moonlight before disappearing into the dark water with a soft splash that seemed impossibly loud in the silence between us.

My wolf howled again, that broken, agonized sound that I felt in my bones.

"There," Michael said, dusting off his hands. "Now we're done. Pack your things and vacate the Luna's quarters by morning."

He left me there on the balcony, staring at the dark water where his mother's necklace—where my future—had vanished. Behind me, the party continued. Paisley's laugh rang out, high and triumphant.

I twisted the silver bracelet on my wrist, the only piece of Michael's mother I had left. The only piece of my old life that remained.

Twenty years of devotion. Twenty years of sacrifice. Twenty years of waiting.

Gone.

All of it, gone.
