Chapter 1
After my beloved boyfriend dies in a fire, my sister marries a rich man. So, I marry her husband, Jason Grant's father.
We go from being sisters to being mother and daughter-in-law. We're still a family, aren't we?
Later, Jason pins me to a corner while breathing heavily. "Money is all you want, right? I can give you everything he can. Wouldn't it be much better for you to be with me than with a paralyzed old man?"
Oh, he's got this all wrong. Money isn't what I want.
His life is what I want.
——
Saul Grant sat in his wheelchair. Despite being extremely pale and weak, he was still the picture of power and authority. He lifted his chin and looked at Jason Grant, his son.
"This is Hazel Youngblood. She will be your stepmother from today onward."
As soon as he was done speaking, he started coughing so violently it sounded as if his lungs would fly out.
There was a loud crash.
Brianna Lewis stopped short before me with her huge, protruding belly, the plate of fruits falling from her hands and crashing onto the ground into a million pieces.
Her voice shook as her eyes filled with disbelief.
"Hazel? How's that possible? How could you marry my father-in-law? How dare you?"
I smiled gently and answered, "He wanted me, and I wanted him, so why wouldn't I dare? Didn't you also marry Jason after all?"
Brianna's eyes were filled with unshed tears. She held a hand to her heart and cried, "How's that the same? How could siblings marry into the same family, one to the son and one to the father?
"How would the Grants see us next time? How would they treat us if they knew? Have you even thought about how outsiders would make a joke out of us if they ever found out?"
I shook my head despite Saul's concerned eyes on me. "My last name is Youngblood, and your last name is Lewis. We don't even share the same last name, and there are no other living relatives of ours who would ever point us out.
"Nobody would ever know if you didn't tell them. They wouldn't even know we were siblings! Also…"
I kneeled down next to Saul's wheelchair and held his icy-cold hands in mine. "...Who are you to say that we aren't deeply in love with each other?"
"Haha!"
A mocking look appeared on Brianna's face, but Jason clapped a hand over her mouth before she could say anything else.
"Dad, don't fall for other people's tricks. She's nothing but a gold digger. She only married you because she has other ulterior motives!"
Saul narrowed his eyes at him and said faintly, "It's not like everyone close to me doesn't have any ulterior motives anyway."
"I don't—"
Jason wanted to retort instinctively. However, he gave up on the idea when he saw the look in his father's eyes.
Meanwhile, I calmly wheeled Saul up under Brianna's death glare.
…
I patiently fed Saul in his bedroom as he leaned back against the headboard.
"So, did you get close to me on purpose?"
"Why would you say that? I didn't even know Brianna was your daughter-in-law before today," I said. "I cut off all ties with her after our parents died."
Saul pushed my hands away and covered his mouth, coughing violently again. Then, his bright, sharp eyes bored into me.
"Hazel, I don't care if you have an ulterior motive or not. Whichever it is, we are now legally husband and wife. It just so happens that I don't like this daughter-in-law of mine anyway.
"She's rude, obnoxious, and doesn't know when to quit. Jason's behavior has become more and more unacceptable ever since she seduced him.
"As of now, you are her stepmother, so you should do something about her attitude. I'll take care of Jason."
I lowered my gaze and smiled gently at him. "Don't think too much about this. What's important now is nursing you back to health."
Saul held my hands. "Hazel, it's only after meeting you that I realized I'd been living the majority of my life in vain. I promise that I will give you a huge wedding ceremony as soon as I get better."
I just smiled and said nothing.
He had no idea that Brianna wasn't the only person I was planning to deal with.
…
I fed Saul as usual and helped him massage his legs. By the time I was done with his usual physiotherapy exercises, it was already late at night.
I waited until he was deep asleep before carefully closing the door behind me.
Brianna was waiting for me in the corner for goodness knows how long. She neared me with a dark look on her face.
"Divorce him at once and leave the Grant residence. Otherwise…"
"Otherwise, what? You'll kill me?" I asked, looking down at her coldly.
"What are you talking about? I don't understand a single word you said," Brianna replied with a frown. Her eyes flashed with a hint of unease.
"It's alright, Brianna. The old Hazel is dead. You should refer to me respectfully as your mother-in-law now.
"We can still be a big, happy family if you serve me well. Otherwise, I won't mind telling Jason about your little secrets. I can show him what a despicable woman his perfect little wife really is and what kinds of methods she uses to seduce other men."
Brianna took a few steps backward until she backed into the wall behind her. She kept shaking her head in denial.
"Shut up! I never did it! I don't know what you're talking about! You're framing me on purpose!"
One second later, her facial expressions changed. She frowned hard as she looked behind me with tears in her eyes.
"She's always been a liar! Honey, don't listen to her!"
Ah, so Jason was here. He'd heard the commotion and came out to the corridor some time ago. I didn't know when.
I had to admit that Brianna's skill of changing her attitude and emotions were very well polished. Her teary eyes indeed made her look very sad and pitiful.
No wonder she'd been able to stand out from among the throes of women who'd been after Jason.

I chuckled coldly and took a few more steps closer to Brianna, purposely lowering my voice so that I'd sound like the Devil himself.
"Stop acting. You can guess what kind of evidence I have in my hands. Those of you framing and slandering me are useless, and the Grants won't even care. So, what are you going to do?
"Oh, maybe I should give you a hint. I've got a few photos with me. They were all copied from your laptop last time. I've got photos of you with Jason and many other men. I don't know who they are, but I'm sure Jason will know.
"Brianna, Brianna. You've been cheating so much that I think you deserve a PhD for it. Oh, I think I've got some videos too!"
Brianna turned a shade paler for every sentence I said. Suddenly, her gaze shifted, and her legs turned to jelly, making her fall to the ground on her butt. She then held her stomach and cried out loud.
"Ah, my stomach! Jason, my stomach! It hurts!"
Jason hurried forward and carefully picked Brianna up from the ground. "What's wrong? I'll bring you to the hospital now."
He then turned to look at me with daggers in his eyes. "If anything happens to the baby in Bree's belly, I'll kill your entire family!"
Brianna's acting was terrible. I scoffed. She hadn't improved a bit since the last time.
I covered my mouth and giggled softly. "You want to kill my entire family? Sure!
"It's just that I'm now legally married into the Grant family, darling. So, does that mean you're planning to kill your own father? Or, maybe you'd like to kill yourself instead?"
Jason pressed his lips together and cast a fleeting glance toward Saul's room door. Then, he rushed downstairs with Brianna.
…
The next day, Saul's regular doctor, Edgar Jaycock, came over for Saul's routine check up. After he was done, I sent him to the door.
"Mr. Grant is recovering very well. If this continues, he should be able to live for another decade or so."
I smiled softly. "Thank you, Dr. Jaycock."
"You…"
He looked deeply into my eyes, hesitating to speak. However, when he saw the disapproving look in my eyes, he chose to remain silent and left.
Nonetheless, Brianna saw everything in her calculating eyes. Soon, an evil scheme popped up in her mind.
She had always been the kind of person who was rash with her decisions, but this time, she was unusually patient with me. She even pretended to keep the peace with me on the surface.
A week later, when Edgar came back for Saul's routine checkup, Brianna added something to our drinks while we were both busy in Saul's room.
The drug took effect very quickly. We were still in the waiting room when Edgar suddenly pounced on me and started kissing me everywhere.
I forcefully suppressed the burning lust in my body and pushed him away with all my might. I wanted to run out of the door, but then I realized that it had been locked and bolted from the outside. I hammered away at the door in vain as Edgar's footsteps came closer behind me.
I lifted my head and stared at the camera in the corner of the room. I was frantic. In my desperation, I suddenly heard heavy footsteps passing by outside.
I immediately started hammering at the door again for help.
The door was unlocked and swung open. Jason then looked at me in confusion. "What's going on?"
I tugged at his sleeve and suppressed the lust again. "Save me. Take me to the hospital."
Jason was taken aback. He then looked at Edgar, who was completely red in the face and in a half-unconscious state behind me.
Jason grinned playfully and replied, "Sure, I can save you. Let's make a deal."
He then picked me up and rushed me to the hospital, ignoring Brianna's tantrum and curses directed at me.
When I finally woke up from my delirium, Jason was sitting on the bed next to me. He was lightly tracing my facial features with his fingers.
"Tell me what your motive is."
I looked away and forced myself to sit up in bed. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Hazel, I refuse to believe that you would truly fall in love with an old man with one foot already in the coffin."
"Does your father know that you're talking shit about him behind his back?"
Jason grinned and looked at me indignantly.
"So what if he knows? That's the truth, anyway. He's just lucky that he survived such a huge crash."
I cocked my head to the side, taking my time to give him a once-over.
"Speaking about the accident, wanna guess how I managed to marry your father?
"By right, millionaires like you guys would rather have multiple mistresses outside of the home than marry and bring home a wife who's obviously not from the same circle as your family. You guys would be worried sick about giving outsiders a chance to snatch away the family inheritance.
"So, why do you think your father was willing to marry me? Have you ever thought that perhaps he didn't trust anyone else anymore, other than myself?
"After all, that car crash was very fishy. It was too much of a coincidence for it to happen right after the incident where you guys were fighting for his money.
"Wanna guess who his top suspect is?"
Jason's face shifted. "I didn't do it. I have nothing to hide."
I smirked and didn't comment on that. Instead, I went on and said, "By the way, let me tell you something else. Your father made an appointment with his lawyer and secretary earlier that day, along with a few foreign faces I've never seen before. I could tell that it was a very serious meeting."
"You…" Jason hesitated. "Why are you telling me this?"
I lifted my head and stared into his eyes before breaking into a smile. Then, I lightly drew two circles on his iron-like chest and said simply, "Guess."
