Chapter 5

Adriana began her attack before dessert.

The screen behind the stage changed from the Falcone crest to a security video.

In the footage, I entered a private building downtown two days earlier.

Dante Vitale’s building.

A murmur spread through the ballroom.

Adriana stood beside Elias, her eyes wet, her voice trembling.

“I didn’t want to say anything tonight. But I can’t stay silent anymore.”

Silent.

The word was deliberate.

She looked at me. “Lydia has been meeting the Vitale family behind Elias’s back.”

The room went cold.

A Moretti heir meeting a Vitale before signing Falcone territory away was not a small scandal. It was treason.

Elias turned to me slowly.

“Is this true?”

I lifted my tablet.

I went to discuss music.

Adriana laughed bitterly. “Music? Or betrayal?”

Another file appeared on the screen.

A forged contract.

It claimed I had sold unreleased Nocturne songs to Dante Vitale and planned to accuse Adriana of theft after the wedding.

Adriana pressed a hand to her chest. “I treated her like a sister. She wrote a few drafts for me when she was recovering, and I always thanked her. But now she wants to steal Nocturne from me because she’s jealous.”

A few guests whispered.

“So Adriana is Nocturne?”

“I heard the mute girl only helped with lyrics.”

“Maybe Moretti wants Vitale protection.”

I sat still while the room rewrote my life around me.

Elias’s face was unreadable.

Julian stood behind him, jaw tight.

Adriana’s tears fell at the perfect moment. “She even tried to push me at the boutique today. Elias, I’m scared. If she hates me this much, what else will she do before the wedding?”

Elias gave an order without looking away from me.

“Take Lydia upstairs. No visitors. No phone. She stays there until after the ceremony.”

Two guards stepped forward.

Julian moved first.

He blocked them.

“No.”

Elias’s eyes narrowed. “Move.”

Julian did not.

I saw his gaze drop to my abdomen for the briefest second.

My blood ran cold.

He knew.

Maybe he had heard the doctor’s call at the boutique. Maybe he had seen the way I stood with one hand pressed unconsciously against my stomach.

Adriana noticed too.

Her eyes sharpened.

Julian said, “No one touches her until I know whether that child is mine.”

The ballroom erupted.

Elias turned to him. “What did you say?”

Adriana went pale.

I closed my eyes for half a second.

So this was how the secret came out.

Not through my choice.

Through a man claiming ownership over a child he had no right to claim.

Julian stepped closer to me, voice low but clear enough for the nearby tables to hear.

“You’re pregnant, Lydia. Aren’t you?”

Elias stared at me.

For the first time in years, his composure cracked.

“Pregnant?” he repeated.

Adriana recovered first. “That’s impossible. Elias hasn’t—”

She stopped too late.

The silence that followed was sharper than a knife.

Elias looked at her.

Then at Julian.

Then at me.

A terrible understanding began to spread across his face, but it was not regret. Not yet.

It was anger.

Possessive, humiliated anger.

“Take her upstairs,” he said again, colder than before.

Julian grabbed my wrist. “I said no.”

The brothers faced each other across the banquet floor.

One had used me as a legal key.

The other had used his brother’s face to enter my bed.

And both now looked at me as if I were something they had the right to fight over.

I pulled my wrist from Julian’s hand.

Then I lifted my tablet and wrote slowly, large enough for both of them to read.

The child is mine. Not yours.

Julian’s face changed.

Elias’s hand curled into a fist.

Adriana suddenly stepped back and clutched her stomach. “Elias… I don’t feel well.”

Of course.

Whenever the truth became dangerous, Adriana became fragile.

Elias hesitated.

Just one second.

Then he turned toward her.

That one second was all I needed to understand him completely.

Even with my pregnancy exposed, even after Julian’s confession, even while my reputation burned in front of every family, Elias still chose Adriana first.

Julian saw it too.

His face twisted.

My phone had been taken earlier, but Dante had prepared another route.

A waiter passed behind my chair and slipped a folded napkin beside my plate.

Inside were three words.

Your mother’s safe.

Below them was a time.

Midnight. East gate.

I folded the napkin in my palm.

The ballroom was still in chaos. Elias held Adriana. Julian argued with the guards. The old families whispered like vultures.

No one noticed the mute woman they were fighting over had already stopped belonging to any of them.

Chapter 6

By midnight, I was gone.

Not from the estate yet.

From the version of myself that had ever wanted to stay.

The guards outside my room thought I was locked in. They did not know the Moretti estate had once belonged to my grandmother, or that the east wing had old service passages hidden behind the walls. Elias had bought the house after my father died, but he had never understood its bones.

I did.

I packed very little.

A coat.

A folder of contracts.

The pregnancy report.

The wedding program with Adriana’s name in my place.

And the small hard drive hidden inside my piano bench.

That drive held every original Nocturne master file I had ever written, including the raw recordings I made before losing my voice. It also held the guide tracks Adriana had depended on for years.

Before leaving, I entered the Falcone studio.

Adriana’s performance file for the wedding was waiting on the main computer.

I deleted the real backing track.

In its place, I uploaded a new one.

The first thirty seconds would sound normal.

Then the guide vocals would vanish.

Then the screen would show the metadata of every song Adriana had claimed as hers.

Composer: Lydia Moretti.

Performer: Nocturne.

Original creation dates: all before Adriana’s debut.

I also left one final file.

A recording from Elias’s study.

His voice, clear and cold:

“Adriana needs Nocturne more than Lydia does.”

Let him explain that to the families.

At the east gate, a black car waited without headlights.

Carlo stepped out first. “Miss Moretti.”

I looked past him.

In the back seat, my mother slept beneath a blanket, pale but alive.

My knees almost failed.

Carlo reached out as if to steady me, then thought better of it. “Don Vitale is waiting.”

I climbed into the car and took my mother’s hand.

For three years, Elias had used this hand to keep me obedient.

Now it was warm in mine.

Free.

The car pulled away from the estate.

I did not look back.

Across the city, the Falcone wedding began without me.

Adriana walked down the aisle in white, wearing my mother’s black pearl veil. Elias stood at the altar, his face cold and controlled. Julian stood beside him, but his eyes kept moving toward the entrance.

Waiting.

Still expecting me to appear.

The guests whispered when I did not.

Adriana smiled through it and stepped onto the stage.

“For my wedding gift,” she announced, “I want to sing the newest work from Nocturne.”

The music began.

The first notes were flawless.

Adriana relaxed.

Then the guide vocals cut out.

Her voice stumbled.

The screen behind her flickered.

A list of files appeared.

NOCTURNE_MASTER_01 — Composer: Lydia Moretti

NOCTURNE_MASTER_02 — Composer: Lydia Moretti

NOCTURNE_WEDDING_VOW — Composer: Lydia Moretti

The room went silent.

Then Elias’s recorded voice filled the hall.

“Adriana needs Nocturne more than Lydia does.”

Adriana screamed, “Turn it off!”

But it was too late.

At that exact moment, every phone in the ballroom received a live broadcast link.

The screen changed again.

This time, it showed another stage.

Dante Vitale’s private club.

Black curtains. A single piano. A microphone waiting beneath blue light.

I stepped into view.

My hair was down. My black dress was simple. My throat scar was uncovered.

The room on the other side of the broadcast was full of reporters, music executives, and men from families who hated the Falcones enough to enjoy watching them bleed.

Dante Vitale stood at the edge of the stage, silent and dangerous.

I walked to the microphone.

For three years, the city had known me as Elias Falcone’s mute bride.

For three years, Adriana Hale had worn my music like stolen silk.

I placed one hand over my stomach.

Then I looked straight into the camera.

My throat burned.

My voice was rough, low, and unfamiliar.

But it was mine.

“My name is Lydia Moretti,” I said.

Across the city, in the Falcone ballroom, Elias went still.

Julian took one step forward.

Adriana’s face turned white.

I continued.

“And I am Nocturne.”

Then I began to sing.
