Chapter 1

I was digging through a dumpster for leftovers when my wife, dead for three years, showed up.

She stepped out of a Rolls-Royce and looked down at me like I was part of the trash.

"Honey, you passed my test. Just like I knew you would."

I stood there holding a moldy bread roll.

Staring at her. Blank.

It turned out that three years ago, at a college reunion, her ex-boyfriend, the campus heartthrob, had made a proposal:

"I want to see if the two of you are really in love.

"Fake your death. Cancel all his cards. Take back the house.

"If he's still single after three years, you pass. You in?"

She'd laughed.

"Why wouldn't I be?

"George Graves is crazy about me. Forget three years. He'd stay faithful for thirty."

Now she turned to the man in the passenger seat and raised an eyebrow.

"Told you so."

The bread crumbled to pieces in my fist.

Marian Henson looked at me. "Alright, I'm here to take you and Fred Gravesdy home.

"Where is he?"

"Dead."

I lifted my eyes. "Three years ago, every card got declined. He didn't get his surgery. He died."

——

Marian froze.

Her gaze darted around the landfill.

There was nothing here but the endless stench and me, clutching a fistful of moldy bread.

I loved that boy down to my bones.

Wherever I went, Freddy went with me.

"Stop joking around."

A flicker of panic crossed Marian's face. "I mean it. I'm here to bring you both home."

"Home?"

My eyes were red when I looked up. "Three years ago, when you faked your death, they said you left behind a mountain of debt. They seized the house too.

"Freddy and I had nowhere to go. We've been out here ever since. What home?"

Her lips moved without sound for a long moment before she managed to speak.

"That... that was just part of the test. Don't worry, the house was always in my name. Come on, tell Freddy to stop hiding. Mommy wants to say sorry."

"Then go ahead."

I threw a death certificate in her face.

"Go down there and apologize to him yourself."

When the paper landed in her hands, her fingers trembled.

"Freddy..."

She read the words. Sudden cardiac death. Her eyes went red instantly.

"I was only gone three years. How can he be gone?

"You're lying to me, aren't you?"

Marian grabbed my shoulders. "I know I was wrong. Stop putting on an act to punish me. Just let Freddy come out!"

I just looked at her.

A cold, contemptuous curl at the corner of my mouth.

The hands gripping my shoulders shook.

Marian stared at me, and tears slid down her face.

"Marian, how can you not see through something this obvious?"

Frederick Delgado picked up the death certificate.

"Look. Doesn't it remind you of the one I forged for you three years ago?"

He pointed to the stamp at the bottom.

"It's not even as good as the one I made.

"See here? That's not how an official seal gets placed."

He let out a scoff and looked at me. "Mr. Graves, we've both been through this before. Trying to fool us with something like this? That's bringing a knife to a gunfight."

Marian blinked, coming back to herself.

Frederick kept pointing things out to her.

"Look at the signature. It's so stiff you can't tell? And this paper, it's obviously been aged on purpose. You went through the whole process three years ago. Mr. Graves here is actually pretty experienced. He even predicted you'd come find him today, dressed himself in rags and waited for you at the dump."

"You're full of it!"

My eyes burned red.

Marian only frowned.

Chapter 2

After examining the death certificate front and back several times, Marian looked at me with undisguised contempt.

"You almost had me fooled."

She tossed the death certificate at me, her voice cold:

"Seems Frederick was right. You're far more calculating than you look."

"You—!"

"By the end of today, bring Freddy home. He's only six. He shouldn't be learning bad habits from a father like you."

She turned to leave.

I scrambled to my feet to stop her.

But Frederick stepped between us.

"Mr. Graves..."

His voice dropped low enough that only I could hear:

"I know Freddy's been dead for a while now."

I stared at him in disbelief.

"Want to know why Marian doesn't?"

He let out a quiet laugh. "Because I made sure every piece of news about Freddy never reached her."

My fists clenched.

"You know, Freddy really was pitiful.

"His mother had barely 'died' before he was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect.

"There was a donor match for him. A perfect one. But his father couldn't scrape together a single dollar. Working four jobs a day, never sleeping, and still couldn't cover the surgery.

"So little Freddy just... missed his chance."

My eyes burned red.

"But don't worry."

Frederick adjusted the cuff of his tailored sleeve. "He didn't die for nothing. His bone marrow, his kidneys, his corneas..."

The air left my lungs.

He laughed softly.

"Shame you weren't there. When they forced the boy to sign the consent form, he kept crying for his daddy.

"And you, his father, were out delivering food." He tilted his head. "Ah—!"

"You son of a bitch!"

I seized his throat with both hands. "Give me back my son!"

"Enough!"

A slap cracked across my face.

Three days without food. I collapsed into the heap of garbage.

Marian shielded Frederick behind her.

Frederick's voice turned wounded, pitiful:

"I was just asking where he's hiding Freddy. Mr. Graves can survive in a landfill, but a child can't take that kind of suffering!

"And just because I wanted to take Freddy somewhere safe, he tried to kill me?!"

"That's a lie! You just said—" "Enough!"

Marian's jaw was clenched so tight the tendons in her neck stood out. "If you have even a shred of conscience as a father, you'll bring Freddy back yourself.

"Otherwise, we're getting a divorce."

She opened the passenger door for Frederick and they drove away.

Divorce?

I laughed.

Fine. But before that, I had one more thing to do.

The next morning, a formal complaint letter sat on the desk of Marian's boss.

At the same time, a banner appeared across the front of her company building:

TECH RISING STAR MARIAN HENSON KILLED HER OWN SON FOR HER COLLEGE SWEETHEART. The bold letters drew a crowd in minutes.

And I knelt at the entrance, holding Freddy's portrait.

Silent. Motionless.

Everything she and Frederick had done, I'd printed into pamphlets and handed them out on the spot.

Some people's eyes went red just reading them:

"Is that a child in the photo? He was so small. How could Ms. Henson just abandon her husband and son, fake her own death for three years?"

"Faking your death is one thing, but cutting them off completely? Froze all the money, pretended to mortgage the house. Was this really a loyalty test, or was she trying to drive her husband into the ground so her ex could take his place?"

"The company needs to answer for this! If it's true, does someone like that deserve to sit in that position?"

Within the hour, a senior executive came downstairs personally to escort me up.

Marian stood in the doorway of her office, watching me approach. Her expression was unreadable.

The door closed behind us. The executive poured me tea himself.

Chapter 3

"Mr. Graves, why don't you just forgive Marian and Frederick? Let it go."

My hand tightened around the cup. "After what they did, you're asking me to forgive them?"

"Look, I know Marian went a bit too far, and Frederick was out of line.

"But Marian is the backbone of this company. Every major project has her name on it.

"You have to think about the bigger picture here, don't you?"

I couldn't speak.

The executive smiled at me. "How about this: I give Marian and Frederick a formal warning on their records, and for you, I can arrange a settlement payment.

"I'm sorry about the child, I truly am. But you and Marian can always have another one. You're still husband and wife.

"Marian's career is booming. You'll only benefit more from that."

I was so furious I laughed. "Fine, protect her. But why are you protecting Frederick too?"

The executive paused for a moment.

"You didn't know? Frederick was personally recommended and vouched for by Marian."

I nearly dropped the cup.

I had submitted my resume to this tech company three times.

Every single time, it vanished without a trace. No explanation.

I had begged Marian. Begged her to put in a word with her bosses, just to get me an interview.

Not a guaranteed position. Just an interview.

I knew her influence. She wouldn't have even needed to ask permission to give me that much.

But she said she had to keep things professional.

She told me not to put her in a difficult position.

So for me, it was about keeping things professional.

For Frederick, it was a direct recommendation straight to the top.

My knuckles went white around the cup. I stared at her.

"And if I don't accept?"

The executive gave a thin smile. "I'd advise you, Mr. Graves, not to pick a fight with the company."

I hadn't been gone from the building long.

The internet was suddenly flooded with posts about me.

Husband Suspects Wife of Affair with Male Colleague? Was Son's Death a Tool for Revenge?

Just like that, the public sympathy I'd had evaporated. The crowd turned on me overnight.

The comment sections overflowed with praise for Marian and Frederick.

Had the privilege of working with Ms. Henson once. Genuinely wonderful person, flawless professionally, and always appropriate with male colleagues.

I don't know what Marian Henson's husband could possibly have to complain about.

Maybe George Graves is the one who's been cheating?

I've met Mr. Delgado in person. Incredibly kind, very respectful toward women. Guess when you're that successful, jealous people just come crawling out of the woodwork.

That level of trending traffic didn't happen organically.

I knew Marian's hand was behind it.

I went back to the home I hadn't set foot in for three years.

I ran my fingers over the photograph on Freddy's urn, smiling bitterly.

"I'm sorry, buddy. Daddy didn't protect you."

A set of divorce papers landed on the table.

I had just reached for Freddy's urn to take him with me when the door was kicked open.

Marian stormed in, dragging Frederick behind her. His forehead was wrapped in gauze.

"Where's Freddy?"

I wiped the tears from the corners of my eyes. "What do you want?"

"What do I want?"

Marian let out a cold laugh. "Frederick got hurt. You put Freddy up to it, didn't you?"

"Marian!"

My fists clenched. "What are you talking about?"

Frederick gritted his teeth.

"Mr. Graves, why bother denying it? When that kid came at me with a hammer, I saw his face clear as day. It was him.

"He said he was getting revenge for you.

"If Marian hadn't shown up when she did, I was completely caught off guard. That kid might've actually killed me."

I clenched my jaw.
