Chapter 1
My life became a tragic tragedy ever since my best friend asked my drunk husband to drive her home. She claimed that it was too late to go home alone. He agreed and took the car to send her home
Unfortunately, when they were only halfway to her house, they had an accident.
My husband called me and begged me to come to get them immediately. He even asked me to be the scapegoat for him.
Of course, I agreed to take the fall for him and as a result, I was sentenced to seven years in prison.
After I was released from prison, I was devastated when I found out that not only did my husband have a romantic relationship with my best friend, but he also had sold our daughter to human traffickers.
Moreover, to make sure I left with nothing, the two of them sneaked into the house at night, locked my bedroom door and burned down the house. And, as a result, I was burned alive.
To make sure that no one would suspect their involvement in murdering me, they made it seem that I had committed suicide
Ring … ring … ring!
The sound jerked me awake from the nightmare. I could still feel the flame licking my body. The burning sensation and pain of being burned alive were still echoing all over my body. As I tried to get my bearings, the consistent ringing of the phone finally brought me back to my senses.
When I picked up the phone, I could hear the panic in his voice, "Where are you?"
I was too stunned to answer him. What happened? Wasn't I already dead in the fire?
"Honey! Hurry! I just hit someone!" Fred Jefferson shouted franticly.
My body shook when I remembered what he had done to me in the past.
When Fred did not hear my response, he became even more anxious
"Didn't you hear me? I am drunk! No one should know that I was the one driving the car. Come over here and take my place."
I had to force myself to calm down, before I could reply, "Alright, I'll be right over."
"Hurry up! The man that I hit looked bad. I think he is not going to make it. I need you here as soon as possible."
Beep ….
As soon as he hung up the phone, he sent me the address.
In my past life, because Fred had driven in an intoxicated state when he hit a man, he became too scared. So, he did not dare to bring the man to the hospital. As a result, the man missed the best time to treat his wound.
Instead, he left the scene and told me to pose as a driver. In the end, all the blame was placed on my head and I had to serve seven years in prison for him.
This time, I would not be so foolish to accept his arrangement.
I immediately called nine one one and the police. I calculated the time of their arrival so I could come there after they arrived at the scene. Then, I leisurely called the taxi and headed there.
When I arrived, chaos had already begun. The paramedics were busy trying to save the victim then they ushered him into the ambulance and took him to the hospital. As for the police, they had already secured the scene and processed the place.
Meanwhile, Fred was busy trying to coax my fair lovely best friend, Megan Smith, with his hand around her.
Actually, I felt sick seeing them acting lovey-dovey in front of everyone. However, to erase their suspicion, I had to act stupid.
Putting on a worried expression, I ran toward them and yelled in panic, "Honey, are you all right?"
When he saw me, there was a rage in his eyes. He yelled at me angrily, "I've told you to come immediately! Do you want to see me dead?"
I pretended to be aggravated and wiped away the nonexistent tears. Then with a shaky tone, I said, "After I received your phone, I immediately rushed over here. Unfortunately, on the way here, I got stuck in a traffic jam. I could not do anything about it."
"You damn bitch! I could just …." Fred raised his hand, ready to slap me, but when he saw a traffic police come toward them to take their statement, he put his hand down. Then he told me not to say a word.
As soon as the traffic police arrived in front of us, he covered his nose and asked, "Who drives the car?" Then he signaled to the other police to bring the breathalyzer here.
Megan and Fred looked at each other, but they did not say anything
I decided to strike first, so I immediately said, "Officer, my husband did not do it on purpose. Please, don't arrest him. He is a law-bidding citizen, not a criminal."
Fred whipped his head so fast toward me when he heard my words. His eyes were burning with anger as if he wanted to kill me.
However, I pretended I did not see his angry gaze. To make my acting more believable, I shrunk my body and looked at the police timidly.
The police turned his attention toward Fred and asked, "Were you the one who drove the car?"
Fred gritted his teeth and clenched his fists. He shook his head raised his hand and pointed at me then moved his hand to Megan. "No, I wan't. It was her."
Megan was my friend at the college. She was stunningly beautiful and had a gentle nature. After she knew I was marrying a rich man after graduation, she often visited my house.
Last night, after we drank some beer, she claimed that she had drunk too much and was too intoxicated to drive home. She even insisted that Fred to drive her car. Then they left together.
Megan bit her lips and after some time, with great difficulty, she finally nodded and said, "It was me, Officer."
As for their cheating, I sneered in my heart. I knew my husband too well. He was born into a rich family so he had a lot of money to spend. He loved enjoying a luxurious life, drinking and indulging himself.
Part of the reason, he married me, was because I came from an ordinary family and I was a timid person and easy to control.
After our marriage, he kept his lavish lifestyle outside and was known as a rich young master. Meanwhile, I had to stay at home, playing a dutiful housewife while enduring his beating and scolding.
When the police knew Megan was the driver at the time of the accident, besides testing her with the breathalyzer, he also wanted her to take a blood test to determine her alcohol level.
I knew she was just a scapegoat, the real perpetrator was Fred.
So, I pretended to be dumb again and said in an aggravated manner, "This would never happen if we did not agree when Megan asked you to take her home."
When the police heard this, he told Fred, "We will be testing you, too."
Fred glared at me. I knew if we were alone, he would be beating me.
Ever since our marriage, Fred would beat and scold me every time I did something slightly different than he wanted. He had beaten me so hard that I had to stay in the hospital to recuperate.
I had thought once we had children, he would change his way. However, I did not realize it was gold habits never died, because the beating and scolding never stopped.
When he heard that he also had to undergo the test, he became panicked and shouted, "Why should I? I did not drive the car!"
The police answered him calmly, "Just cooperate with us and do the test. It will be over soon."
"How dare you talk to me like that!" He yelled angrily. "Don't you know what kind of relationship I have with Chief Thompson?"
"Well. We don't care who you know. Just shut up, cooperate with us and take the test immediately."
Chapter 2
When I listened to their conversation, I could not help but smile inwardly.
It was so lucky that the officer who was handling to accident this time was a young rookie who was not afraid of power. Otherwise, I was scared Fred could avoid being tested just because of his relationship with Chief Thompson.
I pretended to be an understanding wife and coaxed him, "Honey, it is already late and everyone is tired. Don't make it harder for everyone. Don't worry, just do the test. I will help you to take care of the rest."
Fred's bloodshot eyes glared at me. I was so familiar with this sign. He was going to hit me.
However, he managed to refrain himself and after throwing me a threatening look, he followed the police to do the test.
The police had already taken the car's dashcam, but the surveillance cameras at the accident scene were still intact.
This accident happened near Homestead Factory and there were only two cameras outside.
In my previous, Fred managed to get the footage from the Homestead Factory and erase it because of the Jefferson family's intervention. After all, the Jefferson Family was one of the investors there. However, I would let him succeed this time.
Although the Jefferson Family was the investor, after my in-law went traveling, they gave the management of the factory to me. So, getting into the factory and obtaining the security footage was an easy task for me.
When I walked to the factory, the security guard was not even surprised to see me. I managed to distract him and copy the surveillance footage. I would not be so foolish to take away them.
As I walked into the house, I finally saw my daughter. In my past life, after I was released from prison, I learned that Fred and Megan had sold her to human traffickers when I was in jail. I could not help but cry and hug my sweet little girl tightly and all I wanted to do was to hug her forever.
Unfortunately, before long, Fred arrived. Seeing his angry face, I asked Mrs. Lana, the nanny, to take my little girl away.
Without saying a word, Fred started to pull his punches toward me. The beating kept raining down on me without stopping.
Looking at his crazed expression, I knew that he was beyond furious. However, this time, I was not afraid. These beatings would only harden my resolve to take my revenge on them.
The intense pain made me lose consciousness. When I woke up, it was already noon the next day.
Seeing me wake up, Mrs. Lana bought me a bowl of porridge. She looked at me with a pitying gaze. "Ma'am, are you alright? This is the third time this month."
Usually, in the past, I would get angry and scold her for meddling. I also defended Fred in front of her. However, this time, I only asked weakly, "Where is my husband?".
"Master left the house this early morning."
I knew he must have gone to Homestead Factory to delete the footage. However, he would never realize that he was too late. I had already copied them and I would use them to destroy him.
Using the fact that he was not at home right now, I immediately moved my battered body from the bed and used the computer to watch the surveillance footage.
In the footage, it could be seen clearly that it was Fred who was driving a car and the man was drunk. Meanwhile, Megan was sitting beside him in the passenger seat and burying her head in his lap.
I watched the footage calmly and copied it into several USB drives. After I was done, I hid them in several places.
I put one of the USB drives into the envelope and imitated Megan's handwriting to make a blackmail letter. Then I sent the envelope to the Jefferson Family.
When Fred finally came home from the Homestead Factory, he was in a good mood. There was a hint of smugness on his face. He must have thought that he had handled everything perfectly.
I bought a bowl of foie gras soup, put it in front of him and approached him while playing the role of a subservient wife, "Honey, you are back, I brought you a foie gras soup for you."
Fred looked at my bruised face with impatience. He took the soup and said, "We have a maid. Why do you have to do these things yourself."
I sneered in my heart. In his eyes, To him, I was no different from a maid. Maybe worse than that. At least a maid got paid and wasn’t beaten.
I forced myself to hold back my nausea and said in a warm voice, "I want to make sure you get the best, Honey. Your health is my concern. I must do it myself to make feel at ease."
Perhaps seeing me act so nicely toward him, Fred's mood became better and he took a sip of the soup and then said, "I really love you. I don’t want to hit you, but sometimes I can’t control myself. You know the psychologist said I have a rage disorder. It's normal for my rage to flare out."
I wanted to ask why his disorder did not make him hit his parents or go berserk at the police station. Why did he only direct his anger toward me? Could it be that this disease was also specialized in targeting people?
In my past life, he always talked sweetly toward me after hitting me and I always forgave him because I thought it was my fault. I couldn't help but feel a little amused when I remembered my past reaction.
However, I pretended to be pitiful and said, "It’s okay. I don't blame you. If I only behaved better, you wouldn’t hit me. I'll try to do better."
Fred nodded in satisfaction. I seized the moment to ask, "Is the person you hit okay?"
He casually shrugged. "That guy died. He was so pathetic."
My heart sank. Even though I had called the police and the nine-one-one as soon as possible, I still could not save the man.
Then, I asked again, "What about Megan? Is she alright?"
"She’ll be fine. We gave Chief Thompson some money, she'll be out in a few days."
I gripped my clothes tightly to stop myself from shaking.
What I didn't expect was that it did not even take a few days, Megan was already out the next day. She even went straight to the Jefferson Mansion from jail.
Usually, when she came to the house, she would show how close she was to me and treated me well. Now, she immediately went to Fred and confidently leaned into Fred's arm then said coquettishly, "Fred, I took the fall for you and had suffered a lot. You owe me a big reward."
Fred immediately squeezed her waist to stop her from talking.
Normally, I would feel hurt seeing their interaction. However, all I could think of was how to take my revenge.
I carried a fruit platter in my hands then I approached her and with a pretended concern tone I asked, "Megan, you’re out. Are you okay?"
Megan who was still leaning in Fred's arms, looked at me with a hint of challenge in her eyes and said, "Yeah, I am okay. It's just my legs are a bit sore from walking so much. I can borrow your husband's arm to lean on, right?"
I smiled nicely. "Of course. Here, you can eat some fruits too, while doing so."
Then I left them together. Their intimacy no longer bothered me. After years of marrying Fred, I had seen worse than that.
Now, I only cared about finding evidence of Fred bribing Chief Thompson.
When I thought about the blackmail letter he was about to get, I smirked. The thought had really lifted up my spirit.
Maybe he underestimated me or thought I was too stupid, but he left his computer unlocked in the study. I immediately searched through his files to find the evidence of his crime.
While they were busy being intimate with each other, I found his transfer record to Chief Thompson.
Although I felt so happy when I found it, I could not help but sigh for being so blind all these years.
After Megan left, I retrieved the blackmail letter from the mailbox. I was not afraid Fred knew I was the one who sent the letter. After all, I had hacked into the postal delivery system and listed Megan as the sender.
I changed my expression into a panicked one and with feigned concern, I showed the letter to Fred and with a shaky voice said, "Fred, look! What is it? Why would someone send this to us?"
