Chapter 3

I didn't sleep.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the nurse's clipboard. I heard his voice, calm and sure.

*I am. I'm Milo's dad.*

At four in the morning, I gave up and sat by the window until the sky turned gray.

By nine, I was back at Mount Sinai. I came alone this time. I didn't tell Mr. Brennan or Tessa.

I had two questions, and I wanted the answers from her mouth.

...

Vanessa opened the door before I knocked, like she'd been waiting.

A nurse was checking Milo's IV. Vanessa touched her arm and smiled sweetly.

"Could you give us a minute? This is a family friend."

The nurse nodded and slipped out.

The door clicked shut. The smile slid off Vanessa's face.

"Back so soon?" She sat on the edge of the bed and stroked Milo's hair. "You really don't know when to quit."

"When did you last see Julian?" I asked. "Before the wedding. The exact date."

"Why? So you can do math like he did?"

"Answer the question."

Milo peeked out from behind her arm. His cheeks were still flushed, but his eyes were bright and mean.

"Bad lady came back, Mommy."

"I know, baby." Vanessa kissed his forehead. "Tell her where Daddy slept last night."

"Right there." Milo pointed at the chair by the window, then at the small cot against the wall. "He stayed the whole night. With me and Mommy."

Vanessa tilted her head. "He didn't leave once. Not once, Claire. He held my hand while Milo slept." She lowered her voice. "And later, he held a lot more than my hand."

My nails dug into my palms. I kept my face still.

She reached behind the pillow and pulled out a white dress shirt. She shook it open so I could see the monogram on the cuff. *J.A.*

"He forgot this. He was in such a rush this morning." She folded it slowly over her lap. "You can bring it to him, if you want. Since you're still pretending you matter."

"Is that all?"

"No." She leaned forward. "He doesn't want your cold, perfect life. He wants this. A son. A woman who needs him. A real family. You were just the girl his parents liked."

I studied her. The cheap coat on the chair. The worn bag by the door. The way her eyes kept darting to my watch.

Then I smiled.

"Five years, Vanessa. Five years you kept quiet. And the week he marries someone else, you remember he has a son?" I tilted my head. "Things must be going badly for you. Bad enough that you'd use a sick kid to steal a man who already said no to you once."

Her face went blotchy red.

"You don't know anything about me."

"I know desperate when I see it."

Footsteps sounded in the hall. They were heavy and quick, and I knew them.

Vanessa heard them too.

She grabbed the electric kettle off the side table. Steam curled from the spout.

"What are you doing?"

She looked straight at me and tipped it over her own wrist.

The water hissed against her skin. She didn't flinch. Not for one second.

Then she screamed.

"Stop! Don't touch him! Claire, please, he's just a baby!"

The door crashed open.

Julian took one look. He saw Vanessa clutching her red, blistering wrist, Milo wailing, the kettle on the floor, and me standing closest to the bed.

He didn't ask anything.

He grabbed my shoulder and shoved me hard.

I flew sideways. My forehead struck the sharp corner of the cabinet with a crack I felt in my teeth. White light burst behind my eyes. Something warm slid down my temple and over my cheek.

"Vanessa!" He was already on his knees beside her. "Let me see. Let me see it."

"She went for Milo." Vanessa sobbed into his chest. "She grabbed the kettle, and I blocked it. If I hadn't been here, Julian, if I hadn't—"

"Bad woman!" Milo shrieked. "You're a bad, bad woman!"

Julian turned his head. His eyes were cold.

"Apologize to her."

I pressed my hand against the cabinet to stay upright. "She did it herself. She poured it on her own wrist. I didn't touch—"

"Enough." His voice cracked like a whip. "He's five years old, Claire. He's in a hospital bed. Stop going after a sick kid and his mother. I don't even know who you are right now."

I laughed.

It came out wet and broken, and he stared at me like I'd lost my mind.

Then his eyes caught on my face. On the blood.

All the anger drained out of him at once.

"Claire." He was on his feet. "Oh God. Claire, you're bleeding. I didn't mean... I didn't see the cabinet. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. Let me look."

He reached for me.

I stepped back.

His hand hung in the air between us.

"Don't."

"Please, just let me get a doctor—"

"You already chose, Julian." My voice came out steady. That scared me more than the blood. "You chose when you dropped my hand at the altar. You chose when you signed that form. You chose a minute ago, before you even asked what happened." I wiped my cheek and looked at the red on my fingers. "You keep choosing. Stop pretending you're surprised by the answer."

Behind him, Vanessa had stopped crying. She was watching.

I walked out.

...

The hallway tilted. The floor seemed to slide away from me. I put a hand on the wall and closed my eyes.

"Miss Donovan?"

A man's voice. Low and unhurried.

I opened my eyes. Tall, dark suit, gray at the temples. Gideon Marlowe. I'd met him twice at charity dinners. He owned half the shipping contracts on the East River.

"I'm visiting a partner on the fifth floor," he said, eyeing my forehead. "You need stitches."

"I'm fine."

"You're bleeding onto your collar." He offered his arm. "Emergency is on the ground floor. I'll walk you. You can argue with me on the way."

I didn't argue.

He waited in the hall while a doctor put four stitches above my eyebrow. He didn't ask what happened. When my assistant, Naomi Pryce, came rushing in, he only nodded to me and left.

Naomi shut the curtain and sat on the edge of the cot.

"Your face." She winced. "Is that from him?"

"Tell me what you found."

She pulled a folder from her bag. "My contact at the lab ran a kinship analysis on Milo's blood sample, using the Ashford genetic profile on file from Julian's surgery two years ago." She opened the folder. "The kid is an Ashford. No question."

My chest tightened. "So he's Julian's."

"No." Naomi tapped the page. "Close match, but not father and son. It's the pattern you'd see with an uncle."

I stared at her.

"Julian has one brother," she said quietly. "Derek. And Derek was in Miami the same summer Vanessa was."

The paper shook in my hand.

"Do you want me to call Julian?" Naomi asked. "He should know he's raising his brother's—"

"No."

She blinked. "Claire?"

I took a tissue from the tray and wiped the last of the blood off my cheek. Slowly. Carefully.

"He'll find out," I said. "But not today."

"Then when?"

I thought of his thumb on Vanessa's face. His hand on my shoulder. The crack of the cabinet.

"When he's given her everything," I said. "His name. His money. His family's trust. When he has nothing left to give."

I folded the report and slipped it into my bag.
