Shadows of Betrayal

The night was cold and silent, only the sound of rain breaking the silence. Selena Alverez stood in front of a magnificent office building that was already dark, except for the highest floor that was still lit. Her hand gripped the electronic key tightly, her breath short. Her heart screamed, warning her to back off, but her determination was stronger.

"I have to know the truth," she muttered to herself, her voice drowned out by the rain.

As an independent detective, Selena was no stranger to investigations. But tonight was different. The subject of her investigation was her own husband, Daniel, a man she had trusted for years. However, a series of recent oddities made her suspicious.

Phone conversations that were cut off as soon as she entered the room, business trips that could never be explained, and most strikingly—large financial transactions that she never knew the source of.

Selena managed to enter Daniel's office using a spare key that she had secretly taken from home. The office was dark, but neatly arranged, like Daniel himself—always in control. She turned on the small flashlight and began searching.

The first drawer was empty, filled only with stationery. The second drawer contained tax documents and financial reports that looked ordinary. But in the last drawer, under a stack of paperwork, Selena found a small, suspicious flash drive.

Her hands shook as she plugged it into her laptop. Several files appeared on the screen, with unfamiliar code names: "Project Elysium," "Shipment Logs," and "Confidential Deals."

She opened one of the files, a document filled with numbers and names that she recognized as belonging to major international corporations.

There were large-scale transactions for shipping goods, but the descriptions of the goods were blacked out. Words like "logistics security" and "client discretion required" made her blood boil.

"What is this, Daniel?" she whispered, mostly to herself.

But before she could read any further, footsteps could be heard from outside the room. Selena quickly shut down the laptop, grabbed the flash drive, and slipped it into her pocket.

She hid behind a large closet, her heart pounding.

The office door opened, and the light from the hallway flooded the room. A burly man entered, holding a flashlight that swept across the room. Selena held her breath.

"I know you're here," the man's voice was rough, full of menace. "Come out, and I won't hurt you."

Selena remained silent, her mind working quickly. Who was this man? Was he one of Daniel's men, or someone else who was also looking for information in this office?

As the man got closer to where she was hiding, Selena knew she had to act. With a quick movement, she reached for the small folding baton she always carried in her bag.

As soon as the man was standing right in front of the closet, Selena swung the door open hard, hitting the man's hand so that his flashlight fell.

The man groaned, but his reflexes were sharp. He immediately grabbed Selena's wrist, trying to immobilize him.

But Selena was a trained fighter. With a hard kick to the man's knee, she managed to escape to the door.

When the man got up to chase her, Selena pulled down a small shelf near the door, knocking its contents over to block her path. She ran down the hallway, breathing hard, as she heard heavy footsteps chasing after her.

In the hallway, Selena saw the emergency exit and hurried inside. The narrow stairs were dark and slippery, but she continued down the steps without stopping. Every now and then she heard the sound of his footsteps getting closer, making her heart beat faster.

Finally, she reached the ground floor. With one strong push, she threw open the emergency exit and ran out into the rainy night.

After making sure she was no longer being followed, Selena stopped in a dark corner of an alley, trying to calm herself. Hands shaking, she reached into her pocket and grasped the flash drive she had found earlier.

"What are you really hiding, Daniel?" she whispered in the dark.

Selena knew that whatever she had discovered tonight was only the beginning. Her husband's secret was bigger than she had imagined, and now she was trapped in it.

But one thing was clear: she would not stop until she knew the truth.

That night, under the relentless rain, Selena was determined that this was not just about uncovering Daniel's secret. This was about survival.
