Chapter 4
"You cannot be serious."
I stared at the boarding pass in my hand, my voice echoing off the polished marble of the private terminal lounge.
"Oh, I am completely serious, sweetie," Clara’s voice cooed behind me.
I spun around to find my stepsister standing there, looking like an absolute winter catalog ad in a cream-colored cashmere trench coat, pristine white designer luggage stacked behind her. Standing right beside her was Dominic.
My stomach violently turned. Dominic looked exactly the same—tall, broad-shouldered, and wearing that same arrogant, expensive cologne that used to make my head swim. But looking at him now, standing hand-in-hand with my stepsister, all I felt was a hot, blinding surge of adrenaline.
Dominic’s eyes instantly locked onto mine, tracking down to the massive emerald-cut diamond ring glittering on my left hand. His jaw visibly tightened.
"Hazel," Dominic said, his voice dropping into that familiar low register that used to comfort me. Now, it just made my skin crawl. "It's... good to see you."
"Wish I could say the same, Dominic," I replied, keeping my voice as smooth as glass.
Clara immediately stepped between us, flashing a brilliant, razor-sharp smile. "Now, Hazel, don't be prickly. We have a long flight ahead of us. Though, unfortunately, we won't be sitting together. Dominic’s family booked out the entire first-class cabin for the core bridal party. I tried to pull strings to get you bumped up from coach, but the manifest was completely locked. You don't mind the main cabin, right? It's only a few hours."
She was doing it again. Smiling like an angel while burying a knife directly into my ribs.
"Actually," a deep, smooth baritone cut through the air behind me, "Hazel won't be setting foot near the main cabin."
We all turned.
Axel Blackwell walked into the private lounge like he owned the entire airport. He was dressed in a sleek, charcoal-grey tailored suit, a black overcoat slung effortlessly over one shoulder. His dark hair was perfectly styled, his piercing gray eyes locked directly onto Dominic with a cold, predatory intensity.
I felt my breath catch. Even though I knew this was an act, the sheer power radiating off him was intoxicating.
Clara’s mouth fell slightly open, her carefully planned poise instantly cracking the moment she saw him. "You... you must be Axel."
Axel completely ignored her extended hand. Instead, he stepped right past her, wrapping a solid, warm hand around my waist and pulling me flush against his side. He leaned down, pressing a lingering, soft kiss right against my temple.
"Sorry I'm late, love," Axel murmured, his voice laced with a thick, possessive warmth that sent a sudden shiver straight down my spine. "The board meeting ran over. Did you miss me?"
"Every second," I lied smoothly, leaning into his heavy frame.
Axel finally turned his gaze toward Clara and Dominic, his expression instantly shifting into one of icy boredom. "And you are?"
"Clara," my stepsister stammered, trying desperately to regain her footing. "Hazel’s sister. And this is my fiancé, Dominic Reed. We were just explaining to Hazel that the first-class cabin is fully booked by the Reed estate, so she'll have to take the commercial connection."
Dominic stepped forward, trying to match Axel’s height, his chest puffing out. "It's a private charter, Blackwell. Strictly family-funded. I'm sure a finance guy like you understands logistics."
Axel let out a short, mocking laugh that made Dominic’s face turn instantly red.
"Logistics?" Axel echoed, pulling a sleek black card from his wallet and tossing it onto the counter in front of the gate agent. "I don't deal with logistics, Reed. I deal with acquisitions."
Axel looked directly at the gate manager. "Cancel our reservations on this charter."
I blinked, my heart dropping. *What is he doing?!* "Axel?" I whispered under my breath.
Clara smirked, a triumphant gleam entering her eyes. "Oh, what a shame. I guess you two will have to catch a regular flight tomorrow. Try not to miss the rehearsal dinner, Sav."
Axel didn't even look at her. He kept his eyes on the agent. "Get my personal Gulfstream prepped on Runway 4. Upgrade the catering to the platinum package, and ensure my fiancée’s favorite vintage champagne is waiting on ice."
The gate agent’s eyes went wide. "Right away, Mr. Blackwell."
Silence descended on the lounge like a heavy block of concrete.
Clara’s smirk completely vanished, her face turning a pale, sickly shade of green. Dominic looked as if he had just been slapped across the face in front of a stadium of people.
"We prefer our privacy anyway," Axel said smoothly, his hand sliding down to grip mine, his fingers intertwining with mine perfectly. The heat of his palm was the only thing keeping my knees from buckling. "A crowded charter feels so... mid-market. Don't you think, Dominic?"
Dominic’s fists clenched at his sides, his chest heaving as he stared at our joined hands. "You think you can just buy your way through this week, Blackwell?"
"I don't think, Reed. I know," Axel replied with a devastating grin. "Enjoy your shared cabin. Hazel and I will see you at the chalet."
Without waiting for a response, Axel turned, guiding me out of the lounge and toward the private hangar doors. The moment the glass doors shut behind us, cutting off my family's stunned expressions, I let out a massive breath I hadn't realized I was holding.
"Axel, you are absolutely terrifying," I breathed, looking up at him.
"I told you, love," he murmured, his thumb absently rubbing against the back of my hand in a way that felt entirely too real. "We aren't playing defense this week. We are playing to destroy."
Ten minutes later, we were settled into the plush, cream leather seats of his private jet. The luxury was mind-blowing—gold accents, a personal chef, and a bed in the back cabin. As the jet lifted off the tarmac, climbing high into the winter clouds, Axel poured two glasses of champagne, handing one to me.
"To the start of total warfare," he said, clinking his glass against mine.
I smiled, the champagne bubbling against my lips. "To total warfare."
We spent the first hour of the flight reviewing the family tree, Axel memorizing every name and dynamic with the precision of a corporate raider. But the comfortable silence that followed was shattered when my phone vibrated violently against the armrest.
I picked it up, expecting another furious text from Clara. Instead, my breath froze in my throat.
It was an unread email notification sent directly to my private design studio account from a completely blank sender address. The subject line read: *The groom is keeping secrets.*
With trembling fingers, I tapped the attached multimedia file. It loaded a crystal-clear, high-resolution photograph taken via a hidden camera inside the Aspen chalet's master bedroom suite just one hour ago.
In the center of the frame was Dominic. But he wasn't alone. He was passionately pinning an incredibly beautiful, mysterious brunette up against the glass doors—and it absolutely wasn't my stepsister Clara.
"Axel," I gasped, the champagne glass slipping from my hand and shattering against the cabin floor, dark red liquid pooling on the white rug.
Axel was on his feet instantly, his gray eyes flashing with alarm as he grabbed my shoulders. "Hazel! What's wrong?"
"Look," I whispered, my voice completely shaking as I thrust the glowing screen toward his face. "Look at what my brother-in-law is doing before his own wedding."
Chapter 5
The private jet touched down on the snow-slicked tarmac of Aspen, the tires screeching against the ice before taxiing toward a line of waiting black luxury SUVs. The crisp, thin mountain air hit my face the moment the cabin doors opened, instantly snapping me out of the shock of that anonymous photograph.
Axel didn't let go of my hand for a single second. As we slid into the heated leather interior of the vehicle, he took my phone, zooming in on the mysterious brunette pressed against Dominic in the picture. His jaw was clenched so tightly a small muscle pulsed near his ear.
"We play this incredibly smart, Hazel," Axel murmured, his gray eyes locking onto mine as the SUV began its steep climb up the winding mountain roads toward Chateau Reed. “That woman isn’t random. I’ve seen her before.”
My breath caught. "Who is she?"
Axel studies the picture. “Someone who shouldn’t be anywhere near Dominic Reed.”
“Meaning?”
Axel looks away. “I’ll explain later.”
Twenty minutes later, the SUV pulled up to a massive, multi-million dollar glass and timber chalet nestled against the snow-covered pine trees. Chateau Reed looked like a fortress of pure opulence. The driveway was packed with high-end sports cars, and the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows revealed a crowded room full of high-society guests sipping champagne.
The second we walked through the grand double doors, the heavy chatter in the room completely died down.
"Hazel! Oh my goodness, look who actually made it!" My mother’s high-pitched voice echoed across the foyer. She rushed over, wrapped in a plush fur shawl, her eyes immediately bypassing my face to analyze Axel. Her mouth fell open in an instant, unpolished gasp. "And you must be... Axel Blackwell. The billionaire."
"A pleasure, Mrs. Westbrook," Axel said smoothly, stepping forward to shake my stepdad’s hand while keeping his arm securely wrapped around my waist. The heat of his body was the only thing anchoring me as the entire room stared, whispering frantically.
Clara and Dominic stepped out from the main parlor, holding matching crystal flutes of champagne. Clara’s perfect smile looked completely strained, her eyes darting from the blinding diamond on my finger to Axel's impeccably tailored suit. Dominic, however, was staring directly at me, his eyes dark, heavy, and full of an intense, toxic possessiveness that made my skin crawl.
"Welcome to our home," Clara said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "I'm so glad Axel’s... little schedule cleared up enough to join the main family. Let me show you to your quarters. I personally arranged the room assignments to ensure everyone was completely comfortable."
I felt a sudden prickle of anxiety at the back of my neck. Axel tightened his grip on my hip, pulling me closer against his side as we followed Clara up the grand winding staircase, away from the staring guests.
Clara stopped at the very end of the long, east-wing hallway, throwing open a heavy oak door. The room inside was beautiful, featuring a massive stone fireplace, a private balcony overlooking the snowy valley, and—
My heart stopped dead in my chest.
One bed. A single, king-sized bed adorned with white silk sheets and a mountain of plush pillows.
"Oh, I hope this is alright," Clara purred, spinning around to face us with a look of pure, calculated malice in her eyes. "Since you two are *so* passionately in love and rushing to the altar, I figured you wouldn't mind sharing the master suite. The rest of the mansion is completely booked out by Dominic's extended family. There isn't a single extra cot available in the entire valley. You don't mind, right Axel?"
She was testing us. She wanted to see if we would panic, or demand separate rooms, proving that our whirlwind engagement was a complete fraud.
Before I could even open my mouth to stutter out an excuse, Axel let out a low, deeply amused chuckle. He stepped past Clara, tossing his heavy black overcoat onto a nearby armchair.
"Mind?" Axel echoed, turning back to face her with a devastatingly charming grin. He walked right back over to me, his hands sliding up to frame my face, his thumbs gently brushing over my cheekbones in a way that made my pulse instantly skyrocket. "Clara, I practically had to bribe your sister just to let me sleep in the same timezone as her back in the city. Sharing a bed with my future wife is exactly what I was looking forward to this week."
He leaned down, his gray eyes darkening with a heavy, intense heat that felt entirely too real. Right in front of my stepsister, Axel pressed his lips against mine.
It wasn't a fake, polite peck. It was a slow, deeply possessive, lingering kiss that tasted like dark chocolate and winter air. My fingers instinctively gripped the fabric of his vest, my head spinning from a sudden, violent wave of vertigo that had absolutely nothing to do with my medical condition.
It wasn’t the intensity of the kiss that frightened me; it was the terrifyingly small part of my heart that wished it hadn't ended.
When he finally pulled back, his breathing was slightly uneven, his eyes locked onto my mouth. "Right, love?"
"R-Right," I breathed out, my voice completely breathless as I tried to regain my footing.
Clara’s hands tightened around her champagne flute so hard I thought the glass would shatter. Her face turned a brilliant shade of furious red. "Wonderful," she snapped, her sugary voice completely vanishing. "Dinner is at eight. Formal attire. Don't be late."
She slammed the heavy oak door behind her, leaving us completely alone in the massive suite.
The moment the lock clicked, I stumbled backward, dropping onto the edge of the silk mattress. "Axel... what the hell was that?"
Axel didn't answer immediately. He walked over to the stone fireplace, tapping the smart-home panel to ignite the logs, his back turned to me. "We had an audience, Hazel. If I didn't make that look completely undeniable, she would have called the papers by dinner time."
"But the bed..." I whispered, looking at the single mattress. "We have to sleep together? For a whole week?"
Axel turned around, a slow, wicked smirk playing on his lips as he unbuttoned the top two buttons of his dress shirt. "Don't worry, Sterling. I don't bite unless I'm provoked. You take the left side, I'll take the right. We are business partners executing a contract, remember?"
I swallowed hard, the memory of his lips still burning against mine. This was getting dangerous. The boundaries of our friendship were melting faster than the snow outside.
I reached into my pocket, pulling out my phone to review the anonymous photograph one more time, trying to force my mind back onto the mission. But the moment the screen lit up, a brand-new notification banner popped across the top.
It wasn't an email. It was a direct text message sent to my private number from an untraceable, encrypted number.
I tapped it open, my breath catching as my eyes scanned the words.
*“Enjoy the master suite, Hazel. Since you’re sharing everything now, maybe ask your fiancé why Sterling Design Group has been sitting on Blackwell Capital’s internal corporate acquisition watchlist for six months. He didn’t come to Aspen because you’re his best friend.”*
My head snapped up, the room spinning violently as the text planted a dark, chilling seed of doubt in my mind. I stared across the room at the man standing by the fire—the man who had just kissed me like I was his entire world.
Chapter 6
I locked my screen, the text glowing in the dim firelight like a toxic warning sign.
*Blackwell Capital’s internal corporate acquisition watchlist.*
My throat tightened. I stared at Axel’s broad back as he smoothly hooked a silk tie around his neck, adjusting it in the mirror without a single care in the world. Had every favor he’d ever done for me been calculated? Had our entire third-grade-to-adulthood friendship just been another long-term investment strategy?
*Stop. Not now,* I told myself, forcing a breath. I couldn't crack. Not when we were standing in the heart of enemy territory.
"Hazel?" Axel turned, his gray eyes locking onto mine, instantly catching my stiff posture. "You look pale. Vertigo hitting again?"
"No," I lied, slipping the phone into my evening clutch before my fingers could tremble. "Just trying to mentally prepare for the family firing squad downstairs."
"You don't have to face them alone," he said, stepping closer. He reached down, his large, warm hand covering mine, gently tracing the edge of the diamond ring he had bought me. "Remember the protocol. I play the obsessed fiancé. You play the queen who won. We don't break character."
*Are you playing a character with me, too?* The question burned at the back of my throat, but I forced it down.
The grand dining hall downstairs was a masterpiece of high-society pretension. A massive mahogany table stretched across the room, lit by a crystal chandelier that cast a sharp glare over forty of the city’s wealthiest elite.
The moment Axel and I stepped into the room, a wave of hushed whispers rippled through the guests.
"Ah! The guests of honor!" My stepdad, Richard Westbrook, boomed from the head of the table. He stood up, smoothing his tailored suit, his eyes gleaming with greedy dollar signs the moment they landed on Axel. "Axel, my boy! Come, sit. We saved the prime seats for you."
I glanced at the layout. Richard had placed us directly across from Clara and Dominic.
Clara sat in a stunning, backless cream gown, her manicured fingers wrapped tightly around a crystal wine flute. But it was Dominic who drew my gaze. He looked entirely impeccable—except for the faint shadow of exhaustion under his eyes. When he looked at me, the arrogance wasn't there for a split second. Instead, a flash of genuine, raw regret crossed his face, before his mask quickly slid back into place.
Axel pulled out my chair with effortless grace, leaning down to whisper against my ear, "Smile, love. Dominic is practically choking on his own tongue."
I forced a radiant smile, settling into the leather seat. "Thank you, darling," I said loudly enough for Clara to hear.
Clara’s perfect smile looked completely rigid. She leaned across the table, her eyes dropping instantly to my left hand. "Hazel, sweetie, that ring is just... so substantial. I’m surprised Axel managed to find something so large on such short notice. Usually, pieces like that require months of verification. Unless, of course, it’s a temporary lease?"
The table went entirely quiet. The passive-aggressive venom in her tone was unmistakable.
Before I could even formulate a retort, Axel leaned back in his chair, a cold, mocking smirk playing on his lips. "A lease, Clara? Blackwell Capital doesn't rent assets. When I see something irreplaceable, I secure it permanently. I would think your fiancé understands how hard it is to hold onto something truly valuable."
Axel’s gray eyes flicked directly to Dominic, the underlying threat clear and lethal.
Dominic’s jaw clenched so hard a small muscle jumped in his cheek. He took a heavy swallow of his whiskey, his eyes burning into Axel. "Securing an asset is one thing, Blackwell. Keeping it satisfied is another. Some things are too complex for a finance guy to manage."
"Is that right?" Axel murmured, his voice dropping into a dangerous, freezing calm. "Funny. I’ve always found that clarity eliminates complexity."
Clara blinked, looking back and forth between the two men, completely oblivious to the underlying tension. "Well," she laughed nervously, adjusting her diamond necklace. "Dominic is very focused on his family's new business merger right now. Speaking of which, Dominic, didn't you say your new lead consultant was flying in tonight? The one from Tokyo?"
My breath completely froze in my lungs.
*Tokyo.* The mysterious brunette from the photograph on the jet. The one pinning Dominic against the glass.
I glanced at Dominic, keeping my voice perfectly level as I reached into my clutch, my fingers finding the cold glass of my phone. "How exciting. Dominic, the lighting in the master suite upstairs is truly remarkable. It catches everything so... clearly. I was actually just reviewing some high-resolution references a private scout sent over to my design studio."
I slid my phone out onto the white tablecloth, the screen face down. "I was thinking about showing the entire table during the dessert toast. To celebrate the... transparency of this marriage."
Dominic’s face turned an immediate, pale shade of ash. His hand shook slightly as he set his whiskey glass down. For a brief second, the venom left his eyes, replaced by pure panic. He stared at me, his mouth parting slightly as if silently begging me to stop.
A heavy, suffocating silence fell over our section of the table.
Just as the tension reached a breaking point, the grand double doors of the dining hall swung open. A butler stepped into the room, clearing his throat loudly to catch the family's attention.
"Annuoncing the arrival of the Reed Estate’s business consultant," the butler called out. "Ms. Elena Vance."
I turned my head along with the rest of the guests as a striking, incredibly beautiful brunette in a tailored emerald gown glided into the room. It was the exact woman from the photograph.
Axel’s fingers tightened imperceptibly around his wineglass.
"No..." Axel breathed.
I looked at him sharply. It was the first time in the fifteen years I had known him that genuine, unscripted shock crossed his face. The cold, calculated billionaire mask had completely shattered.
Elena stopped right behind Axel's chair, ignoring the rest of the room. A brilliant, knowing smile spread across her lips as she leaned down, her perfume filling the air.
"Hello, Axel," Elena said softly, stopping beside his chair. Her smile was calm, almost amused.
“It’s been a long time.”
Axel’s face went completely still.
Then she looked at me.
“So,” she said, studying me with unsettling familiarity. “You’re Hazel.”
