Chapter 1 of My Husband and Son Celebrated Her Pregnancy While I Lost Our Baby

The hem of my hospital gown had gone from white to red in less than an hour.

I lay on a cold exam table in the ER with my knees pulled up, one hand pressed to my belly and the other wrapped so tightly around my phone that my knuckles ached. Every few minutes, the cramp came back. It started low, twisted, and climbed until I had to bite the inside of my cheek to keep from screaming.

The screen showed seventeen outgoing calls. All of them to Daniel.

Under the call log sat a notification from Ethan's account, a blurry thumbnail I hadn't bothered to open. Something blue. Something bright.

"Mrs. Mercer, we're getting the ultrasound ready," a nurse said, adjusting the fetal monitor strapped across my stomach. "Is your husband on his way?"

"He's coming," I said, because I needed it to be true.

I hit call for the eighteenth time.

This time, it connected.

"Daniel?"

What came through wasn't his voice. It was music, loud and thumping, then a sharp pop like a cannon, then a wave of kids shrieking and cheering.

"It's a boy!" a voice yelled, close to the phone. Ethan. My son. "Audrey's having a boy!"

I stared at the ceiling tiles. The monitor beside me let out a soft, steady beep, and for one stupid second, I was back in our living room a month ago, Daniel on his knees in front of me, his lips pressed to the curve of my stomach.

*Nothing's going to happen to you two,* he'd said. *Not while I'm around.*

"Daniel," I said louder. "Daniel, can you hear me?"

Rustling. Laughter. Then, finally, him.

"Hey, sorry, it's insane in here. What's up?"

"Daniel, I'm at the hospital. I'm bleeding. Please come."

I heard him laugh, but not at me. He was turned away from the phone, talking to someone else. "Look at that. Our boy."

*Our boy.*

The words didn't make sense. I was the one who was pregnant. I was the one lying here with blood soaking through the sheets.

Before I could say anything, the phone jerked, and Ethan's voice filled my ear, breathless and thrilled.

"Mom? Mom, are you seeing this? Dad let me pop the cannon!"

"Ethan, sweetheart, give the phone back to Dad. Right now."

"But Mom, it's a boy." He was practically bouncing. I could hear it. "Mom, don't ruin the party. Audrey's baby is going to be my real little brother."

My throat closed.

"Ethan," I said, slowly, the way I talked to him when he'd done something he didn't understand was wrong. "Give the phone to your father."

"Hold on, I'll show you!"

The screen flickered. Before I could stop it, the call switched to video.

The first thing I saw was Ethan's wrist, close to the camera, a neon-blue party band wrapped around it. Then the picture swung, and the room came into view.

A wall of blue and silver balloons. Huge foil letters spelling out MERCER across the middle. A table with a three-tier cake frosted the exact shade of a summer sky, *Baby Mercer* piped across the top in white icing.

And behind it, Daniel.

He was standing behind Audrey with both arms wrapped around her, his hands spread over the swell of her stomach like he was holding something precious. She was laughing, her head tipped back against his chest. Blue confetti clung to her dark hair.

Audrey. His assistant. The woman who'd brought soup to our house when I had morning sickness in my first trimester.

I couldn't look away.

He wasn't just sleeping with her. He was throwing her a party. With his name on the wall. With our son holding the camera.

"Daniel," I said. My voice came out cracked. "Daniel, look at me."

He glanced at the screen. For a split second, something crossed his face. Then it was gone.

"Ethan, give me that." He took the phone, stepping a few feet to the side. His tie hung loose around his collar, the top two buttons of his shirt undone. "Claire. What's going on?"

"What's going on?" I almost laughed. "I'm bleeding, Daniel. A lot. They're about to check the baby. I need you here."

"Okay, okay. Just calm down."

"I *am* calm. I've been calling you for an hour. Seventeen times."

"It's loud here, I didn't hear it." He rubbed the back of his neck. "Look, you're at the hospital, right? You're with doctors. That's the best place you could be."

"I need *you*."

Audrey drifted into the frame, one hand resting on her bump. A diamond bracelet glinted on her wrist. I recognized it. I'd found the receipt in his jacket in March, and he'd told me it was a gift for a client's wife.

"Is everything okay?" she asked softly.

Daniel hesitated, then handed her the phone. "Here. Talk to her for a second. Just don't let her scare you, babe. You know how she gets."

*Babe.*

Audrey held the phone at an angle, her expression soft and sympathetic, like a woman visiting a sick neighbor. "Claire, I'm so sorry you're not feeling well."

"Put him back on."

She glanced at Daniel. He leaned in, and she rested her cheek against his shoulder. He kissed her forehead. Right there, in front of me, while the call timer in the corner of the screen ticked past twenty-three minutes.

"Claire," he said, taking the phone back. His tone had gone flat and tired, the voice he used when I asked too many questions. "Audrey needs me tonight, Claire. Don't make everything about yourself."

The cramp hit again. I curled forward, gasping, and the smell of disinfectant burned the back of my nose.

And suddenly, everything lined up.

The six months of him stepping out of the room every time his phone rang. The phone always face down on the counter. Every prenatal appointment he'd missed because of a meeting, a flight, a deadline. *I'm working this hard for our second baby, Claire. You think this is easy for me?*

He had been working hard. Just not for my baby.

I stopped arguing. There was nothing left to say to a man who'd already chosen.

I held the phone out to the nurse without looking at the screen. "Can you hang this up, please?"

She took it gently and ended the call. Her eyes said everything she was too professional to say out loud.

"Okay, Claire," the doctor said, rolling the ultrasound machine closer. She was in her forties, with tired eyes and a calm voice. "This might be a little cold."

The gel was freezing against my skin. She pressed the probe low on my belly and moved it in slow circles.

The screen lit up gray and white. And there it was, the small, curled shape I'd stared at on the fridge every morning for weeks. The tiny curve of a head. The bump of a nose.

I waited for the sound.

The first time I'd heard it, I'd cried so hard the technician had laughed and handed me a tissue. That fast, fluttering *whoosh-whoosh-whoosh*, like a tiny horse galloping.

The room stayed quiet.

The doctor shifted the probe. Pressed harder. Changed the angle. Then changed it again.

Still nothing.

"Let me get Dr. Patel to take a look," she said quietly.

"Is something wrong?"

She didn't answer. She just squeezed my hand once and stepped out.

A second doctor came in, younger, and took the probe without a word. I watched the screen the whole time. The little shape didn't move. Not a twitch. Not a flicker.

The two of them exchanged a look. Then the first doctor reached over and turned the monitor's brightness down until the image faded into gray.

On the tray beside me, my phone lit up.

A message from Ethan. A photo, sharp this time. Blue confetti raining down over the cake. Audrey in the middle, beaming. Daniel on one side with his hand on her stomach. Ethan on the other, grinning so wide his eyes had almost disappeared, his blue wristband raised in the air like a trophy.

The caption read: *BABY BROTHER!!! 💙💙💙*

The doctor pulled a tissue from the box and held it out to me.

"Claire," she said gently, "I'm so sorry. We can't find your baby's heartbeat."

I didn't take the tissue.

I just stared at the photo glowing in the dark, at my husband and my son laughing under a sky of blue confetti.

In the same minute I lost my baby, they were celebrating another little boy.
