Chapter 1 of You Said We Had to Stay Secret, So I Married the Heir in Public

From the third row, I could see the back of Adrian Cole's head.

That was how it had always worked. Six years of award shows, premieres, and charity galas, and I had never once walked a red carpet with him. I came in through a side entrance, sat wherever a friend at the studio could find me a seat, and watched him from a polite distance like everyone else.

Tonight, he was nominated for Best Actor. Tonight, the distance was supposed to matter less.

Four hours earlier, he had pinned me against the door of his hotel suite, still half-dressed in his tux, his bow tie hanging loose around his neck.

"Stop fixing my collar," he'd murmured against my mouth. "You're making me late."

"You're the one who won't stop kissing me."

"Because I'm nervous." He pressed his forehead to mine, and for a second the movie star disappeared and he was just Adrian, the guy who used to run lines with me on my kitchen floor when he couldn't afford a coach. "After tonight, it's just us. Room service, terrible champagne, no publicists. Okay?"

"Okay."

Then he'd tucked my hair behind my ear and said the thing he always said when I got quiet.

"One day, I won't have to hide you anymore."

I had believed him. I'd believed him for six years.

Now I smoothed the skirt of my black dress and watched the giant screens above the stage as the host, a comedian with silver hair and a talk-show grin, strolled back to the podium.

"Before we hand out the big ones, let's take a quick trip down the red carpet," he said. "Because some of you gave us a lot to talk about tonight."

The screens filled with arrival footage. Gowns. Flashbulbs. A pop star tripping on her train. The audience laughed.

Then the frame froze on Adrian stepping out of a black SUV. Right behind him, in a silver gown that caught every light on the carpet, was Serena Lowell.

His co-star. The woman the tabloids had been pairing him with for three months.

My stomach tightened. Adrian had laughed about those stories just last week. "It's the studio," he'd told me. "They love a rumor when there's a movie to sell."

"And actually," the host said, "why look at a photo when we've got the real thing?"

The live camera swung toward the fifth row. A correspondent in a red jumpsuit was already crouched in the aisle, microphone out, leaning toward Adrian and Serena, who were seated side by side.

"Adrian, Serena, the whole internet wants to know," she said, loud enough for the room to hear. "Are the rumors true? Are you two together?"

The crowd made a low, delighted sound. Someone whistled.

On the screen, Adrian's face went blank. One second. Two.

I knew that look. It was the face he wore when he was calculating. I'd seen it across dinner tables when his agent called, in parking garages when a stranger lifted a phone too fast.

I waited for him to laugh it off. To say what he always said in interviews: I don't talk about my personal life.

Serena smiled and slid her hand across the armrest, palm up.

Adrian looked at it.

Then he took it.

He didn't just take it. He laced his fingers through hers, lifted their joined hands slightly, and turned that famous half smile on the camera.

The room went loud.

"Should we take that as confirmation?" the correspondent asked, practically shouting over the noise.

Adrian laughed, easy and warm.

"Some things don't need explaining."

The applause rolled through the theater like a wave. People twisted in their seats to look. Somewhere behind me, a woman said, "Oh my God, finally," as if she'd been waiting for this.

I had been waiting for something too. Just not this.

Then the camera moved. It swept wide across the audience to catch everyone's reactions, and for one terrible moment, my own face filled the screen above the stage.

I saw myself the way the world saw me. A woman in a plain black dress. Nobody in particular.

So I did the only thing that would keep me from falling apart in front of three thousand people and a live broadcast.

I smiled, lifted my hands, and clapped.

I clapped for the man who had kissed me four hours ago. I clapped for the woman holding his hand. I clapped until the camera moved on and my palms stung.

The rest of the ceremony happened somewhere far away from me. Awards for sound mixing. A montage. A song.

Then the presenter opened one of the final envelopes.

"And the Oscar for Best Actor goes to... Adrian Cole."

He kissed Serena on the cheek before he stood up.

I watched him climb the steps, hold the statue up to the light, and lean into the microphone with that boyish, breathless look the press would call humble tomorrow morning.

"Wow. Okay." He laughed. "I want to thank Marcus, the best director I've ever worked with. My incredible cast and crew. My team at the agency, who never stopped believing in me."

He paused and found the fifth row.

"And Serena. Thank you for standing beside me through all of this."

The audience melted. Serena pressed her fingers to her lips.

Six years. Rent I covered when his checks bounced. Auditions I drove him to. Bad reviews I read first so I could tell him which ones to skip. Nights he called me shaking because he thought he'd never make it.

All of that, and he didn't even leave a pause where my name should have been.

He thanked his mother. He thanked God. He walked off the stage.

I sat through the final applause with my hands folded in my lap.

Afterward, I didn't go to the after-party entrance. I found a quiet corridor behind the stage, near a fire exit, where the noise was muffled and the lights hummed. I didn't even know what I was waiting for until I heard footsteps.

"Evie."

Adrian came around the corner fast, statue nowhere in sight, his tie undone again. He glanced over his shoulder before he even looked at me.

"There you are. Listen, the press is everywhere tonight. We can't leave together. I'll have Danny bring the car around back for you, and I'll meet you at the hotel in an hour, maybe two."

I stared at him.

That was the first thing he said. Not I'm sorry. Not are you okay.

"Don't look at me like that," he said, lowering his voice. "The Serena thing is promo. The studio wanted a story for the sequel, and the reporter caught me off guard. It doesn't mean anything."

"You didn't look caught off guard."

"Evie, come on." He reached for my arm. "You know how this works. It's a few months. Maybe a year. It's business."

"You thanked her."

"Because my publicist told me to." He exhaled hard. "Can we not do this here? Someone could walk by any second."

That was the part that finally cleared my head. Even now, he was more worried about being seen with me than about what he'd done to me.

I stepped back so his hand missed my arm.

"So she gets your hand in public," I said quietly, "and I get you after midnight?"

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

He just stood there in his perfect tux, under the cheap fluorescent lights, and for the first time in six years, Adrian Cole didn't have a line ready.

The silence told me everything his speech hadn't.

Down the hall, someone called his name. He turned his head toward the sound, then back to me.

"The car's coming," he said. "Just go to the hotel. We'll talk there."

I picked up my clutch, walked past him to the fire exit, and pushed the door open into the cold night air.

Behind me, he said my name once.

I didn't stop, and I didn't go to the hotel.
