Chapter 2

Mom still wouldn't stop trying to explain things to the police officer outside, however.

"I promise that my daughter really doesn't have any mental problems! This is all just a misunderstanding!"

The police kept shaking their heads, remembering my weird, unusual behavior last night.

"Can you guarantee that she won't do anything drastic again after she's released?" they asked.

"I can! She won't do anything of the sort anymore!" Mom exclaimed with red-rimmed eyes, producing my medical report and showing it to them.

"This is her medical report from just a while back. She's very healthy and would never do anything heinous! She probably just suffered from some kind of shock this time, causing her to set fire to the mansion in a fit of anger.

"Also, this is the property title. The mansion that burned, indeed, belonged to us.

"Please, officer, just release Rina. We're willing to pay whatever fine there is for this!"

I saw Mom and Dad running around town for me and couldn't help shedding some tears of heartache.

In my past life, I had been framed for a hit-and-run, and they had also similarly used all their connections and means to try to clear my name like this. However, the fingerprints and evidence pointed only to me as the culprit.

Also, I didn't have a proper alibi to prove that I was innocent. On top of that, Nigel and Olivia falsely bore witness and accused me of the hit-and-run, and ultimately, I was forcefully charged with murder.

My family was completely destroyed overnight, and my parents also ended up beaten to death. Yet, even to their death, they never doubted my innocence nor blamed me for anything.

And then, when I opened my eyes again, I realized that I had been reborn on the night that the crime was committed.

I didn't have time to explain things to Mom and Dad. I could only start the livestream and set the mansion ablaze at that very moment.

I quietly cried, apologizing to my parents in my heart. I was definitely going to have to explain everything to them once everything was over.

They tried their best to prove that the mansion indeed belonged to me, and that the arson I'd committed was just from a moment of emotional outburst beyond my control.

Since no one was hurt in the fire, the police only gave me a stern warning and made me pay a fine before letting me go.

I looked at the time. The night was finally over, and I'd safely survived the night.

The mansion wasn't around anymore, and I had an alibi as firm as a rock. I should be safe this time, right?

I sat in the car on the way home, scrolling through the many articles and comments that were trending online.

"City's richest heiress livestreamed arson on her own mansion last night, worth millions of dollars. Is this the annihilation of humanity or the decline of morality?"

Mom snatched my phone from me, her face filled with concern as she looked at me worriedly.

"What happened, Rina? What's going on? Why would you suddenly go and set fire to the mansion? Wasn't that the engagement gift that you had given to Nigel?"

I felt my chest tighten at the mention of Nigel.

"Mom, I'm calling off the engagement."

"What?"

A loud screech threw everyone forward as the car came to an abrupt halt. My head slammed hard against the back of the seat, making me clutch my head and hiss in pain.

I was just about to ask what was going on when two familiar figures suddenly jumped out at us.

"Adrienna Stafford! You're in big trouble!"

Nigel wrenched the door right open and yanked me out of the car. Right next to him was Olivia, my best friend for at least a decade.

"Did you know that the people you hit yesterday died of their injuries despite multiple attempts to save them?"

Mom stared at me in disbelief, looking like she'd just been struck by lightning.

"Rina? You hit someone?" she asked. "Was your emotional breakdown last night because of this?"

I shook my head, just about to explain myself, when Nigel pulled out his phone and made a call.

"Hello? Is this the police? I want to make a report! I've found the culprit of the massive accident on Hutchinson Road last night!

"Yes, yes. She's right next to me right now!"

He then hung up abruptly and looked at me with a fierce look in his eyes.

"You might be my fiancee, Adrienna, but you must pay the price for what you've done!"

I was utterly shocked and hurriedly shook my head to deny it.

"Impossible! I wasn't even driving last night! How could I have hit anyone? Do you even have any evidence?"

Olivia sneered loudly at me.

"Didn't you destroy everything in the fire last night?"

Chapter 3

I was brought to the police station once again.

The police officer looked at me, his expression grim as he pulled out a couple of gruesome photos of the accident last night.

"Adrienna Stafford! You drove under the influence last night and rammed your car right into a car carrying a family of three before fleeing the scene! Not a single person in the car survived!

"The forensic lab has already completed its examination. Aside from the child, the two adults could have survived if only you'd called the police and the ambulance in time! However, you left them there lying helplessly on the road until they died of massive blood loss!"

Everyone gasped.

Mom nearly fainted when she heard this. She looked at me, sobbing uncontrollably, repeatedly asking me what had happened.

Nigel stepped forward and pulled Mom aside.

"Didn't you understand what the police just said, Mrs. Stafford? Adrienne spent last night drinking with some random boytoy of hers, and then insisted on driving back home after she was dead drunk! And then she rammed her car into someone else, killed them, and fled the scene!

"I'd already told her many times before not to visit those shady bars and clubs, but she refused to listen to me! Now, look what's happened! She's gone and gotten herself into huge trouble!"

I was suddenly painted as a shameless, promiscuous, and inhuman person. Everyone else also glared at me like I was a murderer.

"Three lives, Adrienna Stafford! How could you leave them at the scene while you fled?

"Are wealthy people all heartless like you? Did you really think that your life is above everybody else's?"

"I didn't do it!" I defended myself helplessly as tears wouldn't stop flowing down my cheeks.

"Adrienna Stafford! The two adults would never have died if you hadn't run away!"

I kept shaking my head, hoping that someone would believe me.

"I really didn't do it! I never went to the bar last night! I hadn't even been driving! You all insist I did it, but where's your proof? Where's the proof?"

Olivia yelled at me again, "You burned it all up last night!"

Everyone turned to look at me in shock.

"No wonder she went crazy and set fire to everything last night like a crazy person, burning up a whole mansion worth millions of dollars! It was to get rid of the evidence!

"I can't believe that she'd do just about anything to escape the law!

"She's a monster in disguise! A life for a life! She needs to die for her sins!

"What are you police waiting for, an invitation? Two lives that should have been saved are gone! Arrest her now and sentence her to death!"

All of the allegations and accusations against me were as familiar as before. The very same things had happened to me in my past life as well.

I was beginning to feel panicked.

Nigel looked at me with disgust on his face.

"That mansion was supposed to be a gift for me, Adrienna. It was going to be our home after we got married. Yet now, you went ahead and burned it all up just to cover up your crimes!

"If that's the case, I don't see a reason why we should carry on with the wedding anymore."

"Bullshit, Nigel Taylor! You were the one who crashed the car!" I yelled at him.

Two police officers pinned me back down against the chair so that I couldn't move.

"Let me ask you again, Adrienna Stafford. What was the real reason you burned up the mansion last night?

"You insisted that you were mentally unstable yesterday, and your mother said this morning that you were simply emotionally disturbed. Which one is the truth?"

I frowned and gave a different answer.

"I burned the mansion to prove my innocence."

The police officer looked at me, his expression strange.

Then, they brought out an evidence bag containing a lipstick and a bracelet.

"Adrienna, these were the items found at the scene of the crime yesterday. The lipstick and bracelet belong to you. We have also found traces of your DNA at the scene. These were the evidence left behind after the crash."

This evidence was also exactly the same as in my past life.

Then, they would soon find out that there were only my fingerprints in the crashed car that was later found at my mansion.

Then, they would find bloodstained clothes and the dashcam footage that had been destroyed in the mansion.

All of the evidence pointed to me alone.

But now, the garage and the mansion were both burned to the ground. Was the same thing still going to happen again this time?

I forced myself to calm down and think of all possible ways to counter the "evidence".

I looked up and asked the police officers, "Did the surveillance cameras at the crash even capture me in it?"

"You're a pretty stubborn woman, aren't you?" the male officer remarked, impatiently bringing up the surveillance footage of last night.

"The privacy screen of your car didn't allow the cameras to capture your face, but this red Ferrari has been confirmed to be the one registered under your name.

"You might have already destroyed the car, but we will do all we can to—"

I stared at the time on the surveillance camera and suddenly exclaimed, "Stop there!"

I had found the crucial evidence to prove my innocence.

I smiled at last. It was time for me to turn things around now!
