Chapter 2
The police were searching my body parts, so no useful information could be extracted for the time being.
Zane didn't work overtime but left the follow-up work to Cody, his assistant.
He looked through his phone and contacted the cake shop to order a strawberry cake.
Just as he was about to leave, Joe Smith, the police captain, stopped him.
Joe was Zane's classmate in the police academy and also my fellow villager. So, we were familiar with each other.
Meanwhile, he knew everything about Zane and me.
"Zane, life is uncertain, and it's normal for the couple to quarrel. Why not sit down and talk it over with Chloe?"
As my name was mentioned, Zane was in annoyance. He even made a mistake while transferring the money to the owner of the cake shop.
"Joe, we can't reconcile the relationship. I've signed the divorce agreement and sent it to her. If you're really concerned, you might as well urge her to sign it and give it to me quickly."
"Zane, calm down, please. You always get angry once we talk about this. Have you ever talked to Chloe calmly? Why are you so eager to divorce? Is it because of Lily?"
Zane interrupted impatiently, "That's enough. Lily never does anything wrong, and she even speaks up for Chloe. As you know, it is Chloe who cheats on me first, and she doesn't admit it. Joe, if you were me, would you forgive her?"
Joe paused and sighed, "Yet, I know that Chloe isn't that kind of person. She is introverted and not good at expressing herself. Did you confirm that you didn't misunderstand her?"
Zane looked at Joe with disdain. "Why do you speak so well of her? Are you having an affair with her?"
"Zane, shut up!" Joe raised his voice and stared at him angrily.
Walter, the doorman, brought a strawberry cake suddenly.
The sender's name was mine.
Since I was dead, it was impossible for me to buy a strawberry cake.
Zane threw the cake away with a look of disgust. "What a bitch! Why did she buy it? It makes me sick!"
The cake was scattered all over the floor, and everyone present could smell awful blood in the air.
Inside the cake was the smelly red liquid and a foot.
"The feet are fake, and the blood..."
Joe sniffed it and concluded, "It smells like animal blood."
"Chloe makes me mad. What does she mean? Does she warn me that she will strike off Lily's feet if I'm still with her?
"What a crazy woman! When can she realize our relationship has ended."
Joe asked in confusion, "I remember Chloe had a tattoo on her left foot, right?
"This is also a left foot. Could something has happened to Chloe? Is she asking for help?"
He checked the cake box carefully, trying to find some clues.
But the next moment, Zane stepped on it and crushed back and forth. He shouted in anger, "What could happen to her? It's all to attract my attention. The wicked woman just wants to split Lily and me up.
"Lily is such a good woman, but she can't sleep all day because of Chloe's threats. To put it bluntly, I'm determined to divorce her. No matter how Chloe tries, it's useless.
"A few days ago, Lily just sprained her left foot, and it's still swollen. Chloe sent me a fake left foot now. What does she mean? Is the left foot just a beginning?"
Zane returned to the office with disgust and changed his shoes. He finally spoke to Walter, "Please throw away those shoes for me, along with the ones on the ground."
Joe grabbed him and wanted to say something, but Zane pushed him away.
"Instead of wasting time on a vicious woman, you'd better think about how to solve the case as soon as possible.
"She is just a dirty woman. I feel disgusted and unlucky just mentioning her now!"
As a soul, I could only float in the air, unable to defend myself.
Besides, I couldn't argue with him anyone, for I was indeed dirty.
Yet, nobody knew why I became such a woman...
I wanted to know if he really didn't care about it.
Maybe he only treated Lily as the nice woman in his heart.
On the way back, he called me, but I didn't answer. So, he sent me messages angrily.
[If you dare to hurt Lily, I will make you suffer a thousand times more than she did! I promise!]
[Chloe, let me tell you again. We have to get a divorce! If you still have some dignity, just sign the divorce agreement. Otherwise, it will be difficult to deal with when our parents know it.]
[Why can you, a disgusting and vicious person, live in this world? If I were you, I would have committed suicide. How about hitting your head against the wall?]
Seeing these messages, I was so heartbroken that I couldn't breathe. I clenched my fists tightly and forced myself to calm down.
I had no idea why it could hurt me so much after I was dead.
In the past, we loved each other so much. Furthermore, we were actively preparing for pregnancy at the beginning of the year.
But now, he actually wanted me to die! Also, he used such wicked words mercilessly.
However, none of this was my fault.
I really wished he could listen to my explanation.
Right, he couldn't hear it now. After all, I was already dead.
My body had not been found yet, and I was still lying on the dissecting table.
I wanted to know when he could find it.
Chapter 3
The search went smoothly. My other body parts were found out, except the head and feet.
Zane and Cody, his assistant, stood beside the dissecting table and began to work.
The first thing was to extract important clues after processing the remains of my body.
The next step was to extract gastrointestinal and oral residues, open my chest, and examine the cause of my death.
Zane checked and reported, "It looks more like death from suffocation."
"Before and after death, maybe the deceased was..." His voice became lower and lower, and his face became paler.
I guessed that he might think of my betrayal.
But in fact, it wasn't my fault.
Putting a stop to all distracting thoughts, Zane devoted to his work again and dissected my body with rapt attention.
To be honest, I was a little fascinated by it.
Zane was handsome and aloof. The pair of gold-rimmed glasses on his nose made him look mysterious and charming.
My case was so complicated that Zane spent 10 hours completing the forensic report.
Taking off his gloves and mask tiredly, he washed his hands at the sink.
"Tell Joe that the meeting can begin in ten minutes."
At the case seminar, Zane conducted a detailed analysis of the forensic report.
"The deceased is a female, between 20 and 25 years old. The various indicators show that she has been dead for about 4 to 6 days.
"Although there are no stretch marks on her abdomen, she gets pregnant and has a miscarriage before death. The deceased is alive when she is tortured by the murderer. Now, in addition to the head and feet, the child is also missing."
Looking at his furrowed brows and thoughtful expression, I knew that he remembered something.
Indeed, I was four months pregnant.
I told him the good news, but he said I was dirty and shameless. He believed that I was not worthy of having children and being a mother.
He cursed me and our children with the most unpleasant words. Perhaps that was why he couldn't see us after we died.
"It should be the first time for the murderer to kill a person, or he did this for the first time. The wounds are messy. It proves that the murderer has no experience and is not a person engaged in the business of selling pork and beef.
"The victim must have tried to resist before her death, which stimulated the murderer and made him do such a crazy thing.
"Or maybe the murderer has some kind of connection with the deceased. To vent his anger, the murderer kills her cruelly."
Everyone remained silent at this time.
After the meeting, Joe stopped Zane and said, "Don't you think this victim looks familiar? I remember Chloe..."
Zane snorted, "So what? Are you familiar with it? Have you made love with her?"
Joe couldn't help but punch him, "Mind your manners! Why do you become so rude?"
"What the hell do you want from me? Do you want me to show the evidence of her cheating on me?
"I really wish the deceased was Chloe now. If she died, I wouldn't bother to gather the evidence."
At this time, I closed my eyes.
Zane had already gotten what he wished for.
Chapter 4
"Are the results of the DNA test out yet?"
Zane repeatedly dissected my body, trying hard to find any clues about the victim.
"No, we don't have anyone in our DNA database who can match up."
"Have there been any missing persons reports recently?"
"No. I found it strange. The deceased is a pregnant woman, but her husband or other family doesn't even bother to look for her."
As Zane was chatting with Cody, Joe pushed the door open.
"We've expanded the search area again, but there is no news of her head and feet. Also, we're searching closely for the child you mentioned.
"Zane, don't you have any doubts? To stop us from knowing the identity of the victim, the murderer hides the head, but why are there no feet?
"Perhaps because we can identify the deceased by the feet, the murderer intentionally hid them to confuse us."
Zane nodded in agreement. "Very likely."
The assistant added cautiously, "Mr. Smith, Mr. Lawson, do you think the murderer has some kind of quirk? Since he's so cruel to a pregnant woman, can it be that he hates women? There was a similar case in our hometown before. A man suspected that the baby in his wife's belly was a bastard, so he insisted on taking the baby out for a DNA test.
"After he escaped, he continued to commit crimes, killing women like prostitutes."
At this point, Zane's face darkened even more, as if he had suffered some kind of humiliation.
Joe waved his hand and asked Cody to leave first.
"Zane, have you contacted Chloe before?"
"If you're free, why not ask her to sign the divorce agreement and send it over quickly? By then, everyone won't feel embarrassed."
Joe seemed to have suddenly thought of something and suggested, "Since the deceased was a pregnant woman, she should have been to a hospital. Let's go and check it out."
"If you had stopped thinking of Chloe, you would have already found out the truth," Zane scoffed.
Seeing that he didn't trust me at all, I floated in the air, smiling bitterly.
With so many obvious clues, Zane never suspected me.
It seemed like I had disgusted him so much.
All of a sudden, Zane took out his phone and made a call.
His voice was so gentle that I knew who he was calling immediately.
"Why aren't you asleep yet?"
"Darling, I just had a nightmare. I was so scared that I didn't dare to close my eyes."
Hearing his words, Zane glanced at the clock on the wall.
It was eleven o'clock in the evening.
He pinched his brows and took off his white coat. "It's all my fault. Don't worry. I'll go home right now. Turn on the light and wait for me."
Zane used to be a workaholic. Every time he encountered a difficult case, he would eat and live at his office.
At that moment, he just told me that he wanted justice for the deceased. Otherwise, it would make him feel guilty.
I didn't understand why he could stop working and go back now.
Or the current corpse lying on the dissection bed was also dirty in his heart.
It seemed like researching my body wasn't worth the effort.
A dirty person like me really couldn't be compared with his true love.
